My first Sly Cooper game that I got to play was actually Honor Among Thieves. I didn't realize at the time why Murray was so adamant about saving his van in the mission Tearful Reunion. I didn't even realize it was his van! After playing through Band of Thieves and then playing Tearful Reunion again the weight of Murray's passion hit me like 10 tons of bricks and I've loved the guy ever since.
