Hey guys, this is a pretty big update, so please have a read through it if you’ve started the challenge or are planning to start.

Because it’s been a recurring issue that I’m not getting notified when people mention me or the challenge in their entries, I’ve created a group right here on DA to showcase all the composition challenge art. This will not only make sure that I am notified of new entries, but it’s also a way for participants to see each others art and support one another.

What’s happening for submitted entries:
If you’ve already submitted an entry that I’ve favorited here , please wait for me to request it to the group gallery.
If you’ve submitted an entry that I haven’t favorited, (if that’s the case, it’s safe to assume I haven’t seen it) please submit it to the group in the corresponding folder.

What’s happening for future entries:
Rather than mentioning me or the challenge in your description, all you’ll have to do is submit your entries to the corresponding folders in the group.

Because this change will effect the organization of entries, I’ve decided to lift the rule of doing the entries in order. If you’ve submitted something me entries out of order and I haven’t favorited it because of that, please submit them into the group!

Due to this update, my end-of-the-year feature journal will also be changed a bit. Since the group gallery will already serve to showcase all the artwork, my journal will feature entries from a selected few who I think deserve special recognitions. These recognitions include:

⭐️ Most Improved  - a participant who has shown great improvement through their entries. This artist has really pushed themselves to try new things and their entries reflect that.
⭐️ Most Diligent - a participant who has made the most out of each entry. In each artwork, this artist uses the prompt to their full advantage and puts great effort into producing stunning results.
⭐️ Most Reflective - a participant who has shown great commitment to learning from their process. This artist reflects on the process and outcome of their work in order to improve their future art.

I know this is a lot, but here’s the final update: we have a discord server now! It’s not mandatory to join in order to do the challenge, but it will be a place where participants can chat, ask questions and share WIPs of our entries: discord.gg/FMmh9Rj

To sum things up:
- we have a group now! Join it if you’re participating!
- if your entry is in this folder , wait for me to request it into the group.
- if your entry is not there, please submit it to the group.
- completing/submitting out of order is allowed now, though I still encourage they be done in order.
- my feature journal will now consist of special recognitions rather than a broad feature like last year
- we also have a discord server now: discord.gg/FMmh9Rj

Thank you for taking the time to read all this! I hope that the group can become a sort of community for everyone participating and I’d really like to encourage you all to comment on each other’s entries to show support and help one another out. And of course, thank you to everyone for participating. I don’t show it nearly enough, but you guys inspire me so much.

I'd like to say a big thank-you to everyone who participated in the 2017 Composition Challenge  and gave me the motivation to host another one!

This challenge is meant to be a follow-up to that one, though you don't need to have done the 2017 one in order to join this one. While the former was meant as sort of an introduction, I intend for this one to be a little more advanced while still giving the artists just as much freedom with subject matter. If you did the previous challenge, you might be happy to know that dramatic perspectives aren't a requirement this time around. This one includes two grid prompts, as well as two prompts which allow you to choose your own composition type!

For anyone who is unsure about the topic: composition is simply the arrangement of things within a piece. This challenge is a list of 12 prompts combining structure with design elements, meant to help artists  try different approaches to the way we set up our artworks. I'll be doing all 12 this year as well and I hope you'll join me!

1. Golden Triangles
If you've heard of the rule of thirds or the golden ratio, this may look familiar. The grid lines are guides for where to place leading lines, objects and focal points, though you don't need to use all of them. Feel free to flip or change the orientation of the grid.

Grid:    Examples:

2. Arabesque
An arabesque is a sweeping s-shaped line of action that leads the eye through the piece. The object creating the curve can be anything; hair, fabric, smoke, foliage, a character's pose- it can even be multiple objects intertwined or overlapping.

3. Pyramid
The viewer's eye is lead in a triangular path. This can be any type of triangle.

4. Repetition
An element is repeated throughout the piece to give it a unified look. It can be a repeated color, a repeated object or a repeated shape. Avoid tiled backgrounds.

5. Contrast
Contrast can be created by balancing dark and light values or by using complimentary colors. The same way opposite hues/values can be used, juxtaposition can also be created by including two contrasting subjects in the same image. You can choose to do one or the other of these approaches, or both!

6. Environmental Frame
The image is framed by an element of that scene. It doesn't need to fully surround the subject, so long as it's working to keep the eye within the frame. Avoid framing the image with picture frames.

7. Master Study
Find an artist you think has a really interesting/pleasing way of arranging things in their art. Study what exactly makes it feel that way, and then create a piece inspired by their compositions. This isn't an exercise to replicate a piece/style, but rather to learn from another artist's approach and apply it to your own art.

An example of this is HanaEve 's sketchpage from last year's challenge: E L E C T R A . In the description she mentions taking inspiration from another artist in regards to how she arranged multiple drawings of the same character within one image.

Please remember to, in your description, let us know which artist you took inspiration from and provide some links to their art! If you'd like to share your study process, feel free to link that as well!
Here's a video I found helpful for how to go about doing studies: [link]

8. Radiant
Here the leading lines or curves 'radiate' from the subject, leading the viewer's eye toward it. It can be as intense or subtle as you'd like.

9. Dynamic Symmetry
A more complex version of the golden triangles prompt. This piece doesn't need to be perfectly symmetrical, and you don't need to place something on each intersection/line. The guides are there to give you ideas for the positioning and flow of the elements in your piece.

Grid:     Examples:
*I have no idea if the images used as examples actually used this type of grid or not, I just chose ones I thought matched up when overlaid.

10. Movement
Flowing lines, dynamic poses, and motion blurs are all elements that can be used to give the impression of movement.

11. Negative Space
This type of composition uses the space around the subject to create interest. Avoid transparent backgrounds for this as they don't allow you to tell the negative space in the image apart from the background of the site.

12. Redraw
Find a past artwork of yours that you feel is weak in terms of composition. This can be a piece from many years ago, or one from just the past year. Now redraw that same piece but use any one or more of the methods/structures from this challenge or the 2017 challenge, to make the image more interesting.

In your description, tell us about why you chose to take the redraw in that direction and if/how you think that improved the presentation.

Challenge Rules:

In order to be featured in my journal at the end of the year, you must do all 12 prompts.

These prompts must done in order. Doing 1 per month is recommended, but optional.

In the description of each entry, either link back to this journal or mention me so that I get notified and see it. Alternatively, you can send me a note with a link to the entry each time you upload one.

Make sure your description also mentions which prompt your entry is for.

You are welcome to use this as a reference without participating in the challenge, if you do so, following the order and linking back to this is not necessary.

Things to Note:If you aren't sure if you can do all 12, feel free to join anyway (as long as you do them in order). I will still fav and comment on entries for this challenge, even if you don't complete all 12.

I comment on and favorite each entry I'm notified of. If you notify me at the end of the year to show me you've done all 12 (without having notified me at all before), I will add them to the feature but won't fav or comment on them individually.

If your submitted entry doesn't meet the requirements, I'll let you know what needs to be done to fix it! Until that's fixed though, I won't accept your next entry.

An FAQ link will be coming soon to answer some questions you may have! Until then feel free to leave your questions in the comments.

Thank you for having a look through this. I hope you'll consider participating!

I did intend for it to be a little more challenging than the first, but the grids aren't as scary as they look.

For the first one, you just need to have some elements of the drawing following the flow of one or more of the grid lines. For example, the piece I did for it didn't have the figure entirely following the lines, rather the lines were used to decide the positioning of things:

For some examples of it in use, you can check the entries so far: raru-tan.deviantart.com/favour…
I hope that helps!

Hello aa sorry if this is kind of a bother but I just wanted to make sure before moving ahead with the sketch. Does this follow the golden triangles theme correctly?

With the grid:

Sorry, but that doesn't quite follow the grid the way it's intended. The grid can be flipped and rotated, but it has to take up the full canvas.

I really really want to try my hand at this challenge this year ;;A;; all the potential!! I still can't let go of 2017's though,,, I have both lists written down on my sketchbook so I can work on them IF I have the time laughs///
Thank you for organizing such a lovely set of themes this year, can't wait to see all the entries (and your own fabulous walk through the year) <3

Oh my, I was really not sure about joining this for some days, but I'm in! I actually already uploaded my try at the golden triangle composition. Knowing myself I'll probably try and incorporate these in all my drawings, so it might be less of a 12 months and more of a 12 drawigns thing...although with my ammount of free time that may ammount to the same result
Thanks for coming up with the challenge and providing this ressource, I really appreciate it!

Not gonna lie but the golden triangles and dynamic symmetry sort of scares me for some reason. xD But the selection of illustrations you use to show it are so beautiful and they really make me want to try and do good job with them too!

also although it's not necessary, I was thinking of making a reflection journal for each drawing to record my process and to create notes for all of the things that I've learned. Because not only have I already learned a few things since I've started, but also knowing me I'd forget the struggle and all that I learned as soon as I'm done and move on to the next thing. xD

In any case good luck to everybody! I'm looking forward to seeing all of the amazing art that results from this!

LMAO HONESTLY THEY SCARE ME TOO
Though I think that since they're both mostly based on diagonal lines, you could probably focus on having one strong leading diagonal line, and then add in details to go with the other lines. At least that's what I plan on trying so that it doesn't feel overwhelming.

Doing a reflection on each piece sounds like a great idea! I always love reading about the process of both coming up with the concepts and actually creating the artwork.

haha I'm glad I'm not alone! xD
and those are great tips! I'll be sure to keep those in mind as I work through it!

me too! That's another reason why I want to do it because it might help someone out with their own artworks. Or they may even help me out! That's probably more likely LOL
