I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who has participated either or both of the past challenges, and everyone who is considering joining this one!
In the previous 2 challenges, I feel like I covered a lot of the basic composition types. So to avoid being too repetitive, I’ve chosen some things that, while they may not be composition types, are things that can guide how you arrange elements in your art.
How to Participate:
- Create a piece using each of the prompts, 12 pieces in total. They don't have to be done in order.
- Submit them to CompositionChallenge They don't have to all be submitted at once.
- Once you complete all 12, leave a comment on this journal with either a link to each piece or a link to a folder containing each piece.
- The deadline is December 30, 2019.
Optional:
- It's not required, but it is encouraged that you show your support by commenting on the entries of other participants, or leave a constructive critique if the artist has asked for one.
- We have a discord server where you can chat with other participants and share WIPs of your entries! discord.gg/FMmh9Rj
As usual, I'll do a feature at the end of the year with some of my favorite entries! I'll also be doing the special recognition again this year. Three participants will be named "Most Improved", "Most Diligent" and "Most Reflective" as my way of featuring participants who have done an outstanding job. Artwork of those who have not completed all 12 prompts may be featured in the general feature, but artists awarded special acknowledgements must be ones who have completed each prompt.
This year's PROMPTS
01. Limited Palette
Create a piece with a maximum of 5 colors. You can mix the colors in your chosen pallet to create different shades. Arrange your piece with your palette in mind to avoid elements of the same color overlapping too much.
02. Animated Drawing
Create a piece with at least 1 animated element. It can be a character blinking, something glowing or sparkling, or a combination of things.
*If you’d prefer to do this traditionally, this prompt can be replaced with the ‘Movement’ prompt from last year’s challenge. Using apps or online resources to add animations to your art is also perfectly acceptable.
03. Shape
Base your general composition on a shape. It can be a shape prompt from a previous challenge or something else.
circle:
Triangle:
Diagonal line:
04. Panels
Using a minimum of 2 panels create a comic page/strip. It can tell a story or just be images that go together visually to set a mood or communicate a theme.
05. Sketch Page / Collage
Various sketches or drawings (minimum of 3) in the same image. They don't all have to be the same character, but should look coherent in some way (theme, colors, style, etc). Character reference sheets work for this prompt too.
06. Perspective
1 point, 2 point, 3 point, 4 point, 5 point, high angle, low angle, bird’s eye-view, worm’s eye-view, aerial perspective, warped perspective, anything as long as the subject or background aren’t just straight-on.
07. Study
It can be a composition study, master study, style study, photo study, anatomy study or any other kind of study. Doesn't have to be a direct reproduction of what you're studying, just has to show you're taking influence from the way a skilled artist or photographer arranges/creates their work.
08. Reflection
Can be a literal reflection such as in water, on glass, in a mirror or any reflective surface. It can also be a more figurative reflection, such as characters mirroring the same pose, two of the same character, any way you can think to interpret a reflection.
09. Scribble
Scribble on a page and use that to guide your composition. Don’t stress about using the scribble exactly, as long as it follows the overall shape/flow, you’re good!
10. Duo or Group
Create a piece with two or more characters interacting.
11. New Subject
Draw something you don’t usually draw and find a way to make it interesting/appealing to you. If you can’t think of anything, try asking your watchers or friends what they’d like to see you draw more of.
12. Freebie!
Use any prompt from this years’s challenge or any of the previous years’ challenges, or something entirely different. Just let us know in your description what you used.
If you're considering participating, feel free to leave a comment and let us know which prompt you're most excited to try!

Are we allowed to mix some of these prompts with inktober?
For example, making a sketchpage/collage for inktober and counting it as an entry to this challenge as well?

It sounds very interesting, I think I'm going to join, too. I'm a little worried about the sketch page, since I'm kinda "scared" of sketches, but I have to start at some point ^^° Also, I have a question: What exactly do you mean with "scribble"? There are no examples and my english isn't the best ^^°

Sorry for the late response. I didn’t include examples because I couldn’t find any on DA but you can look up “Scribble Challenge” on YouTube for examples. For this challenge, you don’t have to draw directly on the scribble, it’s just meant to be a guide.

I'm thinking of joining again this year. Last year really fueled myself to draw more often and even challenged myself to try drawing new things. Although with my last year of college coming up, I might be busier than before. I'll try my best to see if I can finish all prompts again <3

Oh yay I'm looking forward to this! And since I'm not coming into it like eight months late I'll have more time to work on stuff, which is good. Though being a pretty much entirely traditional artist at this point, the animation one is gonna be... challenging. I legit haven't touched digital in years. I think it'd be interesting to try, though.

Gosh I will try!!♡ Laughs oh no, I still need to work on putting my characters INTO the background rather than just at the front :'D but I'm really flattered and honored that you think so?! I never got around to commenting but I really loved the series of environment illustrations you did near the end of last year!! That's what I aspire to draw for my characters, but I have yet to sit down and actually plan out compositions and perspective SOBS

I’ve always thought your characters looked really grounded in their settings, I think it’s the lighting that really ties everything together. The settings you draw give me life, so I would definitely love to see more of those!

I saw the 2018 one and I'm so hyped for this one! I'm very motivated and I hope that I'll keep company to this challenge ~
It's super interesting and making it one a month might be perfect for me : D
I'm just wondering how i should work out the scribble one lmao

I am so glad you're doing another challenge
However I am a traditional artist and not super comfortable using digital media, would it be possible to swap the animated entry with a entry from last year? ^^

You could swap it with the “movement” prompt from last year’s challenge. I feel like that’s the closest way to give the impression of motion without having to animate it. There are also apps and online tools that can be used to add animations to traditional art, you just have to do a bit of looking around.
