Because they would piss off each other.
UFP: overpacifist, quasi-communist and self-righteous society with a great problem with genetically manipulated people and genetic technologies.
Macross UN: militaristic, capitalistic and paranoid society with a large chunk of population made of clones from normal humans and Zentraedi and genetically manipulated people (ALL of the Zentraedi of Macross), some of them in positions of power (Vrlitwhai Kridanik is commander in chief of UN Spacy from 2016, Exedol Folmo served as advisor to the governement until embarking in the Macross 7 Long Range Colonization Fleet as political advisor, captain (retired) Milia Fallyna Jenius is mayor in the colony city of the Macross 7 Long Range Colonization Fleet).
An encounter between similar societies would be immediate and total war.

So basically it's the leftist Liberal Federation vs rightist Conservative UN

Well I was just talking about the idea of making a Star Trek based mech in general

Uhm... I don't know. And I won't actually consider the Federation 'liberal', not after the Maquis.

Well I'll admit that post war Federation seems to have toughened a bit up after the Maquis and Dominion War, mostly because they had to add some conflict in Deep Space Nine to keep interest up. But the Federation and Star Trek in general is based on liberal ideas of utopia on Earth. Some things are good like, peace, end of hunger and poverty, everyone gets along. But some things just don't make too much sense... like having no money, humans don't seem to have religion anymore.

And some hint of totalitarian dictature in the TNG era. Like that episode where a psychologist (that's Deanna Troi profession, in more normal terms) on a traveling ship proved to have access to data about people supposedly dead, or the subtle repression of non-governement point of views (the Maquis embraced arms because of this, because they protested against the treaty that forced them to leave their homes and the Federation just gave them to the Cardies to be steamrolled. I still have to see a TNG-era Federation civilian with ideas contrary to the official Federation policy that is not far away from the Federation (see Spock in Reunion) or a wanted criminal (the Maquis)), the civilians sent in combat zone on combat ships (remember the Yamato? Or the ships at Worf 359?), this one makes absolutely no sense unless they want the crew more motivated by having to fight to protect their families...
And, by the way, who pay for the food and build the ships? I saw only ONE commercial activity in the TNG-era Federation, Joseph Sisko's restaurant, and that's not enough for a stable economy (or an economy at all). Apart Joseph Sisko and the convicts in the penal colonies, who produce? Believe me, between Kirk's disappearance in the Nexus and the first meeting between Q and Picard someone in the Federation royally screwed up...

Yeah they try and tell you that people don't work for money on Earth at least. They're supposed to work because it makes them happy to do so, and each human is working to improve themselves. That's plausible with some professions like starfleet, traveling in space can be quite satisfying on it's own. Even Joseph Sisko could be working just because he loves cooking and likes to socialize with the people that come in. But it's hard to believe that everyone feels the same way about the less glorious and mundane jobs, unless they got holograms and computers to do all those jobs, but not even that is acceptable anymore with Voyager introducing hologram rights and basically saying the Federation is into slavery by getting holograms to mine and clean things.

And how does the Federation exactly conduct buisness with other cultures I guess they trade... but then how did any of the Federation officers buy any drinks in Quark's bar? And what exactly are they betting with in those TNG poker games?

Oh yeah remember when Riker and Pulaski just vaporize their clones on that cloner planet?

This utopia has a few holes in it for sure

I've been there before, but I dunno, it seem focused entirely on showing how stupid the Star Trek is and how utterly superior Star Wars is. Coming the the conclusion that the Star wars ships and technology is more powerful because they break the rules of physics more then the Star Trek tech. And when I'm a fan of both.... well yeah.

Look in the board of the site, there's a forum where we discuss only on Star Trek. And we're mercyless with everything: SW when we have the occasion, ST when we can, the news, users, me... And it's not our fault if some Trekkie claimed (quote from a letter to Mike Wong) "I studied Kendo while in Japan and Ethiopia, so I know a little bit about sword work too. (Not much as I got bored with all the rote exercises and quit after only a year and a half but enough to know that nothing I've seen in the movies is that good without wire work.) PPS My reflexes and strength alowed me to beat my origional Japanise instructor more than he beat me after the first two months in class. 60 pounds, 0.13 second reflexes and a 228 bench press will do that for you." and we go sarcastic and irritated after a while of similar idiots...

that's nothing I learned my Jedi abilities from Goku, but I accidently defeated him in the first 5 seconds of my class. I have -5 second reflexes. I can only do 5 push ups, but that's good considering I'm actually bench pressing the Earth. I quit after the female Jedi Master Shaak Ti decided I was so hot and we got married and had 5 kids.

Still can't beat Mr. T though...
