Description Alex Ross reproduction...

Back in 2003, as part of an art assignment, my teacher thought I should reproduce this Alex Ross painting but change the black background for a lighter colour so that the Joker's outline would show up. I don't remember if there's any size difference between my reproduction and what I used as reference. I did this with colouring pencils and some white-out or white paint for some of the highlights... I think I messed up Joker's forehead by smearing my hand across it accidentally.
I also felt bad for messing Harley's eyes since I think I did pretty well with the rest of her.

Enjoy,

~Guy H.L.

The Joker and Harley Quinn are © DC Comics and Warner Time. Harley Quinn was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm.

Original painting was done by Alex Ross.

This is my reproduction done with colouring pencil.

Your favourite painting, ever?

I bought the Harley Quinn comicbook mostly because it had that painting as its cover. The story and inside art was still good but I was a bit disappointed since I actually thought that Alex Ross also did the interior art. I know he actually did all the art for a few books but not this one.

yeah, that wasn't one of them. Sadly.

I think maybe it's more fair to say it is one of a group that I would willingly call my favorite painting if any of them were to come up, LOL

Yes, it was my first(and last) try. I don't do art reproductions often. They can be satisfying but at the same time... I don't find them as satisfying to do as original art(even if it's about a character I didn't create). It was still fun to do and I'm happy with the overall result.
Thanks for the compliment, I'm glad you like it!

This was for an art class, I was in a General Arts & Science program when I did this. The art class was very basic but I was part of an art class back in High School and I studied in animation sometime after... So I guess you could say I went to an art school... I've been drawing my entire life pretty much. Well, I think I started drawing when I was 3 years old or so(maybe before).

Well, I chose that title because I really admire Alex Ross' artwork and take on many things. I haven't read any of his comics unfortunately but would like to eventually. Okay, I'm going off on a tangent here... Okay, I chose that name because I admire his artwork and even if I'm pretty sure the original painting is pretty popular and a lot of people have probably seen it at least once somewhere, I wanted to make it clear that it was a reproduction and that I was giving the original artist some credit.

Thanks for all your kind words!

gee... you did it very well... just wondering, how much time you spend for practicing pencil colouring like this. hahaha... did you use a little water colour or it's just my eyes?
well, once again, real good piece of art.

Hi there, thank you.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what you meant with your question? Did you ask me how much time it took to do this piece? Or how much I had to practice before doing it? In case it's the former meaning... I don't remember... Maybe it was a class or two and I don't remember how long those classes lasted.

If it's the latter... Well, I didn't really "practice" this piece... I just went and did it. First, I used a picture of that painting and tried to replicate the outlines in pencil. I know I still have the picture/small poster somewhere... It was either a Wizard magazine mini-poster or my Harlequin/Joker comic with that cover... And then I started colouring and try to erase my line-art at the same time.

I've always loved using colouring pencils. I used to draw holiday "cards" for family members. I still do sometimes but not as often as I used to.

As for watercolours... Nope, I didn't use any. Just colouring pencils and either gouache or liquid white out for some white highlights. I'm glad you thought so though, since Alex Ross mostly uses watercolours.

Thanks once again.

actually, I meant both of them. I work on watercolour and penciling, though I'm at the level of 'beginner' so I think that you're good. I got some lesson in colour just by watching your pic, isn't it nice (for me, hehe..)nevermind that...

So you still have something you can see to draw your piece, or resources of some sort? I thought you did it just from what your mind want it to. hahah...

I used colour pencil too, but I don't really know how to blend colour smoothly, I don't even use it hard enough to leave a pencil mark, but I cant blend it good enough.
I'm not so brave to refers on Alex Ross' style of colouring or lining. and my style is so rough sometime it's almost like a sketches in my papers. I have to draw some darker colour so I know where is my line-art. pheww...

I really glad you reply, coz I'm leeching information from you here -so sorry- so I can improve my skills.. heheheh... I think you're worth the grade of A in art class.

Hi Fujii, thanks for your comments.

Yes, I used a reference for this piece when I did it about 5 years ago now. Even if I altered it a little as mentioned in the comments. If I'm going to do a reproduction of a piece of artwork, I will usually use a reference but as I often mention... I do not use any reference for most of my drawings.

Hmmm, I never thought about blending that much, to be honest. Usually, I just like blending colours together and well... I will usually start from the darkest colours to the lightest ones but I will start with a light pressure on the pencil and will come back on top several times and add more pressure as I get more comfortable with where I'm going with the colours.

Sorry about the late reply and I thank you for the compliments.

well, I use a lot of different colours...

Leetmonkey In reply to WinkGuy1 [2008-10-07 02:58:25 +0000 UTC]

I should explore more colors then, I tend to get a base color then change the darkness/brightness of it using black/white.

WinkGuy1 In reply to Leetmonkey [2008-10-07 21:44:09 +0000 UTC]

As I got older(I know I'm not old but you know what I mean)... I started exploring with colours more, I think... Now for skin, instead of just using the usual "peach-like" skin colour, I'll just start with a dark colour and then move to brighter colours... well, I pretty much do that all the time pretty much and been doing it for some time... Anyway, it's fun to experiment.
