I don't think going out to yum cha is ever complete with one bit of food; the cha siu bao.

Mine is not completed without egg tart, and pheonix talon, and rice noodle roll, and taro puff!

All right, I am greedy, but yum cha allows you to be:]

In addition to cha siu bao, ha gao, and siu mai, I also tend to favor lobahk go, and lomai gai as well. But if it's available, jimawu, the shredded jellyfish, and that dish where you have pork's feet, hard-broiled egg, ginger, and peanuts soaking in dark vinegar are also good choices for me.

Yum:]

I never see peanut in the 'ginger vinegar' tho

Sekitonbo In reply to WinMush [2010-06-18 08:57:24 +0000 UTC]

Really? Because a lot of the 'ginger vinegar' dishes I've seen sometimes have peanuts in them...either they didn't add peanuts in yours, or they didn't go deep enough to give you any. My mum told me that it was rather good for ladies that have gone through pregnancy as it aids in replenishing the nutrients lost while carrying the baby...if I recall.

Actually, back in California, whenever we went out to yum cha, sometimes we'd order it. Now that I live in Richmond, BC, I don't find it as often.

haha thing is. I was born here so I would say I am quite americanized. I'd say that as a family we have those normals dim sum brunches, birthday dinners, ducks etc. :]

WinMush In reply to anniepho [2009-01-13 12:24:35 +0000 UTC]

I just post Har Gow if u r interested.
Hmmm, duck. Do you know they use goose for this dish in China? It's much much much more favoursome!
I can be bias tho...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

anniepho In reply to WinMush [2009-01-14 03:04:17 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I've had goose in both China and HK. I love goose! It is a bit more on the expensive side though right?

do they serve goose in america??

btw, I saw Har Gow. I personally don't like it as much as shu mai, but it seems that those two dimsums are always paired together lol. You cannot get one without the other. I think its harder to get Har Gow down than other dimsums. Most of the times, the wrapping is just too floury or just too paper like if you know what i mean lol.

WinMush In reply to anniepho [2009-01-14 03:37:05 +0000 UTC]

I have to say, that's coz u never come across a good har gow... Hope u will find some next time u r in China... I too dont have har gow much coz i dont find good ones very often...

anniepho In reply to WinMush [2009-01-14 04:25:58 +0000 UTC]

Hmm. I will be on the lookout for good hargow next time I am in china/hk.

Personally, what do you think has better dim sum? China or Hong Kong?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WinMush In reply to anniepho [2009-01-16 04:20:31 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, very hard question to answer...
I'm from Guangzhou China, so I know A LOT OF good yum cha places there.
But HK is amazing if you want to find some variety.
They have their own style, and they are both excellent

Ah, I really need to go back one summer just for fun. After reading your information, what is the difference between the terms "yum cha" and "dim sum". I know it is "drink tea" but what is the difference?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WinMush In reply to anniepho [2009-01-17 14:33:47 +0000 UTC]

Yum Cha is drinking tea, it also means going to a dim sum restaurant coz you will drink tea with dim sum even you are not a tea person...
Dim sum is the food you have when you go to yum cha...
hope it helps...

anniepho In reply to WinMush [2009-01-17 20:21:10 +0000 UTC]

Oh okay that actually makes sense. thanks :]

No, I havent, Do they sell Portuguese tarts in regular yum cha restaurants? Or would it have to be at special bakeries?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WinMush In reply to anniepho [2009-01-23 15:04:59 +0000 UTC]

Funny thing, KFC brought the recipe for portuguese egg tart, so most likely, you can buy one there, or find them in special bakeries

anniepho In reply to WinMush [2009-01-24 02:22:00 +0000 UTC]

Really? That is the last place I would look for one. I will go there next time and ask for a Portuguese egg tart ;D

i see 蛋挞~! you've got a nice cute style to your drawings, they're not bad at all.

i used to like going to yum chas too, but we order the same thing each and every time so it's become a bit repetitive and boring.

good luck with your little project~

You do tend to forget how tasty Yum Cha is if you have it too often... But I heard they now have new variety in China, I cant wait to go back and check that out!
