Short History;
Cecil was created for a City Sanitation company, his main job was to scout ahead of sewer crews to warn them of danger and smell for potential dangerous gas leaks. The people in charge of creating him had a bit of a sense of humor so they made him remenisent of a crocodile, while including the specifications that the sanitation company asked for; which included bright colors for visibility in the dim underground. Thus Cecil was born, although he wasn't always Cecil, the workers he accompanied argued over names for months until they finally just settled on 'The Croc' or 'Crocodile'.
Countless times Cecil saved the crew from potentially hazardous situations, unstable hallways, fast currents, etc. The one thing he had yet to encounter was a dangerous gas leak that could potentially cause explosions. If he were ever to encounter this, he was trained to open his mouth as wide as possible and spread his ears open- that way the crew would see the bright orange coloration and know to evacuate immediately.
Cecil felt most at home in the dark underground tunnels, he was able to slip silently by and enjoy the cool air (though the smell was a downside) the rats kept him company when the humans weren't there, and he didn't have to worry about anything.
One day, the crew was exploring an older section of the tunnels, they had been alerted to unstable areas in the streets above and were concerned that one of the tunnels was collapsing. They suited up, Cecil at the front, and began to descend. The going was slow, the nearest entrance was roughly 2 miles away from where the streets were reported unstable so they had a while to walk. The humans spoke of games and friends while Cecil walked about 30 feet ahead of the group, half listening to their conversations. About a half hour into the the walk, Cecil just barely paying attention to his surroundings, was startled by a mouse skittering past him, towards the humans. He jolted and shook his head, taking a deep breath- and then he smelled it. A stench that was different from the normal sewer smells, he had been trained to recognize and react, but had never actually encountered it. Confusion, fear, and adrenaline all shot through him as he turned around and opened his mouth, but all of those emotions caused his blood to boil, he could feel it rising up all the way to his ears but there was nothing he could do. The men noticed Cecil was missing and swept their flashlights back and forth, looking for him. But he was too far away and the blue on his fur was not enough. One of the flashlights went out suddenly and the man holding it banged it against the nearest wall, which happened to be an old pipe line. The quick metal on metal contact caused a spark, and then nothing.
Fire exploded in the cavern, Cecil hit the wet ground, submerging him and probably saving his life, although he was knocked unconsious. He awoke not too long later to steaming rocks and small fires still flickering, scattered around the now cavernous hole in the ground. There were no recognizable remains of any of the humans, only a singed name tag of one of the men he was supposed to be guiding. He held it close and limped off into the darkness, unable to comprehend or handle what had just happened.
There he would stay.
