One of Fenris' companions was a white female wolf. Early on in his adventures he'd earned the admiration of a reclusive barbarian clan. When Fenris' continued his journey they sent the wolf with him. She was highly intelligent, acted as a guide out of the vast forest. What Fenris didn't discover until much later was that the clan were all Berserkers - shapeshifters - his grandfather's people. The white wolf was one of their young ranger-like warriors, one Fenris had saved when she was in human form. She was eager to see the world and chose to stay with Fenris, but stayed in wolf form most of the time, keeping her true identity secret even from Fenris.
