Description These are pictures of the Steampunk Computer I build. It's life started at the German Triumph plant back in 1937 as a "Standard 12 Typewriter" with a dutch key-set. It was badly rusted and left for dead at a junkshop in our village where I picked it up for 10 euro's in may of 2011. I took it apart and rebuild it to be a computer preserving most of its original looks.

It works? 0o

Any 'steam' components?

Wirecase In reply to DryBonesReborn [2013-04-22 05:53:43 +0000 UTC]

eh... "Steam" components? If you mean, where's all the brass and (glued on) gears? Then, in this case, there not on there... I realize that this piece qualifies more as "Dieselpunk" for many people, but for me Steampunk doesn't necessarily mean lots of brass and gears.

The actual keys do work, right? It's not a touch screen?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wirecase In reply to DryBonesReborn [2013-04-24 05:55:26 +0000 UTC]

Yep, everything works, no touchscreen here. Even the carriage return leaver works, it's an extra enter key now and the turning the paper drum will scroll the page on screen.

Oh, you've got the same phone as me!
Very nice job with the computer! I customised my laptop, but it doesn't look as pretty and professional as yours. Very well done!

Thats amazing, does it all work? 0.0 if so... wants!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wirecase In reply to Diableret [2012-09-26 07:54:24 +0000 UTC]

Most of it works... Some of the small levers on the carriage have no function. But all keys of the keyboard work. The carriage return lever is connected to the "Enter" button in addition to the normal one on the keyboard. Rotating the paper drum will scroll the page on screen up or down like a mouse scroll wheel would do. The green button on the front is the power button...

Glad you like it b.t.w.! I'm currently building a second machine, the original idea was that the second one would be sold but I'm not sure if I can part with it when finished

Wirecase In reply to Elkaddalek [2011-11-14 07:55:01 +0000 UTC]

Haha, it's not a webcam yet. The plan is to make a digital camera out of it and the webcam idea is the backup plan if the digital camera plan would fail.

Very nicely done!

Just a thought, but you could mount a LCD monitor in a victorian style frame and hang it on the wall right behind the desk, then move the "typewriter" computer right in front of it...might maintain the illusion a bit better.

Wirecase In reply to Taka67 [2011-11-12 06:49:50 +0000 UTC]

I had thought about that but I really wanted to have an all in one piece. One of the options that I considered was to put the monitor on its side and have it sit where the paper used to go into the rollers as if it were the paper. For me a big disadvantage of that was that I would loose the "Triumph" logo.

Well that is good to know - I have experience typing on actual antique typewriters and by the end of the day my fingers were soooo tired.... Again, awesome work.
