My adventurer in Dwarf Fortress, Cobar, once had a nasty run-in with some kobolds. It was the first time he was ever injured. They riddled him with arrows, broke his nose, shoved his face in the dirt, and made him eat a bug. If not for his ultra-hardcore companion Dema, he surely would have died that day.EDIT: I swapped the places for the onomatopoeia and speech bubble in panel two (can I even call these panels?). I also moved the last speech bubble down and to the other side of the screen to try and create more of a pause between panels. Also, on a tangentially related note, while editing this I scrolled down and saw a kickass sketch of Link firing a bow.

surviving great injury in dwarf fortress is the greatest feeling in the world
loos your sword, shield , and back up dagger , have your entire party slaughtered
and crawl away bleeding heading into the wilderness armed only with the bolts you were shot with and your one remaining companion. running into and evil biome and a fiendish ash cloud
and then becoming undead, going back, getting your sword and slaughtering the bandits
being undead might be a bit cheap but it makes for one great story

That kind of stuff is the bread and butter of my companion Dema. She's a grandmother who's beaten entire kobold ambushes to death, learned crutch-fu, broken human spines by punching people in the chest, and single-handedly saved my ass countless times. She's the first companion I ever recruited, and I've lost more than twenty since then. She does all of this single-handed, literally, because she lost her weapon hand early on.
