Translation: Blood Dance

Battling has always been referred to as an art, with most comparing it to a dance as it involved the need for a partner. However, if battling is a dance, then it is a Blood Dance for the vital liquid is often shed in the most deadly dance of all.

Tezcalipoca felt like a fish out of water, or a jaguar out of the jungle to be more precise in this case. Xolotl had insisted that the prairie compete within the Carnival of Life, specifically the arena portion. Tezcalipoca not being able to refuse the request of the one he loved, begrudgingly accepted and it had been a sight for the pearl rook at his sight to see. The massive prairie causing the trees to shake as he left the jungle’s edge slowly. It was like seeing a rare phenomenon, and it really was. Tez had never left the forest, never in all of his lives. Under the pearl rook’s care and leadership, the prairie had followed suit as he was led towards where the festivities were held. A journey of several days soon led them to the vast city with a large arena built in the center. Kukuri and other living beings of all kind were heading towards it as if entranced by some silent siren’s call.

Blinking, Tez felt a pull towards it as Xolotl looked up at him. “That’s an arena, it’s where you’ll be fighting.” He informed as Tez looked down at them. “They say if you prove yourself worth, Life gives her blessing in the form of a wish fulfillment.” He added on as Tez looked back to stare at the arena. His gaze widened before it grew back to normal with a steely gaze. The fulfillment of a wish? From the goddess of Life herself? He could feel his heart pound from the statement, any wish? Oh gods, it seemed to good to be true but he would try. Oh he would try. His heart had first asked the request of it but now he was going to win it. He needed that wish, oh how he needed that wish. Lowering his head, the jaguar like prairie clasped his jaws carefully around the scruff of the pearl rook before raising his head. “Tez?!” Xolotl exclaimed in surprised and anxiety as Tezcalipoca launched himself forward. The two flew through the air for a brief moment before Tez landed with a loud thud and began to run towards the arena. His feathers were being blown back from the wind as his tail moved back and forth. Each time a foot slammed down it was a loud ‘thud’. Kukuri heading towards the arena moved away from the large prairie with the pearl rook in his mouth, rocketing towards the arena, all while trailing looks after them. “T-e-e-e-e-e-z!” Xolotl shouted out, voice shaking from his body shaking up and down from being carried and ran off with.

The prairie didn’t seem to hear his words as his claws scraped the concrete floor that soon transitioned into stone as they neared the arena. Tossing his weight at an angle, the large prairie slowed to a stop with the use of the claws digging into the stone. Chest heaving as he gathered air, he lowered a frazzled Xolotl onto the ground with his nostrils flaring. “N-next time give me a-a head’s up.” Xolotl stammered out, his fur out making him look more like a cotton ball than a kukuri. Shaking out his fur, he looked up at the arena, mouth gaped. “We are here.” Tezcalipoca announced gruffly as he stood close to Xolotl. “Stay close. We do not know anyone here, they could be dangerous.” Xolotl was about to retort that Tez was probably the most dangerous thing there but the look in the prairie’s eyes said otherwise. In silence, the two began to head into the arena, the sound of screaming and shrieks to the sound of drums in the distance began to grow louder the deeper they walked in…

Blacky’s handler, Derek Wills, had just about finished attaching the last piece of protective armor onto the raven rook as loud shatter could be heard from outside the halls. A scent in the air made Blacky’s nostrils widen before lifting his head to take it in. And that’s when a huge beast passed in the hallway, crossing towards the other side of the arena. Two people in front, and two in the back was leading a colossal amber prairie, with a smaller common kukuri by its side, white in color, towards the preparation station. The way they all seemed to hurry, made it clear that this was indeed to be Blacky’s opponent.

“Alright boy, you’re all set. Now listen here,” Derek said as Be turned to face his handler. “It’s been a long road to reach this point in life. We’ve had our ups and downs, but we’ve made it through all obstacles, no matter what life threw in our way,” he said and held up a flexed, left arm, made of metal. He stroke Be’s head with his organic, right hand and Blacky pressed his head towards his touch.

“You go out there and you show them all what you are made of. You show Life herself that nothing will make you retreat. Not then, not now. Not ever. I know you are strong Blacky. You’ve always been,” he said, trying the straps on the helmet Blacky wore, making sure it was secure. “Go and show Life your strength,” Derek said as a horn signaled the fighters to take place, and Blacky turned and walked towards the entrees to the battle arena.

Tezcalipoca’s feathers stood upright with his fur bristling when several people began flanking him. “Xolotl, stay close.” He commanded as the pearl rook walked close to the amber prairie as Tezcalipoca moved a protective armed over his companion. He glared at the humans ushering him, baring his teeth at them. “Remove your hands from this Tezcalipoca at once or you will find yourself missing them.” He warned but the humans didn’t remove their hands. They didn’t understand but the action of the prairie baring his teeth did convey to them that they should hurry. And hurry they did, ushering both into the battle arena. Xolotl gave a jerk as he felt hands grab at him and let out a surprised ‘ah’ trying to escape their grasp. Tezcalipoca let out a roar at the humans, pushing away the ones trying to shove him into the arena. “Xolotl!” He roared out as the pearl rook let out a small squeak. “I’ll be alright! You can do it Tez! I believe in you! Show them why you’re the god of war!” Tez’s nostrils flared open and shut as he stood there, watching as his heart was being dragged off.

Turning his head away slowly, he looked forward as a horn was blown. He supposed that was the signal and walking with large, angry steps, he approached the center stage. His opponent was a common kukuri, larger than his heart and of a darker hue. It was clear they wore armor and Tezcalipoca almost let out a small chuckle. No armor was going to protect the poor rook from the god’s wrath. He was going to show Life why he was a god and why he ruled the jungle. He was going to prove himself worthy of her favor. Sizing up the small rook, Tezcalipoca held his head high, the feathers on his crest slowly rising as he puffed out his chest to make himself appear more bigger than he currently was.

“Consider yourself honored to fight this Tezcalipoca, small opponent.” He growled out as he began to ready himself into a fighting position. Now it was to wait for the final signal before he would lash out to attack.

“My name is Blacky, oh feathery one.” He shouted out as a reply. “And I am indeed honored, to face such a great beast such as yourself. May Life bear witness to our battle,” he said and nodded respectfully.  This battle was gonna be tough, that he knew. The sheer power this massive prairie possessed seemed to radiate around him, making B’s whiskers tingle. He had been hoping for a challenge and this great kukuri would indeed prove a worthy opponent.

A loud horn blew, and Blacky set off, charging towards the amber prairie. Being smaller might make him physically weaker, but it also made him faster than the giant before him. And so Blacky began to run circles around the feathered kuku, looking for weak spots and openings. It had been years since he had been in a real battle. Last time was 4 years ago, when he served his previous handler. Blacky tried not to think of it, but he found his armor turning into his old gear, the arena turning into the old ruins of broken homes, and the prairie before him suddenly became someone else and Blacky was suddenly in the heat of the past battle, dodging bullets and jumping over pieces of walls.

Blacky chok his head, trying to focus. His mind kept drifting away and forcing him back to his old memories. It cleared up just as Tezcalipoca turned to him and Blacky realized he had exposed himself.

Oh feathery one? Well at least there was respect in the title. “May Life bear witness to our battle.” He returned the other’s words just as the loud horn blew out again. The sound of people and kukuri alike shouting for the competitor they favored began to drone out into the background as Tezcalipoca’s pupils narrowed to slits. This wasn’t the jungle, he couldn’t attack from the shadows and stealth was invalid in an open arena such as this. Before he could move, the smaller rook dashed towards him, running in circles as if a predator examining his prey for weak spots. Tezcalipoca stood still but watched the other’s movements keenly, trying to look out for a shift in pace, a stumble of a foot, anything that would delay them and present the prairie with an opportunity to strike. Time began to slow down as he noticed the raven rook began to waver, their eyes betrayed them.

Curling his lips back and wasting no time with hesitation, Tezcalipoca launched himself at the smaller rook, the hooked claws on his feet positioning themselves to sink into flesh. Dust was kicked up from the action with small claw marks within the dirt. He could feel himself digging into flesh as he sunk his teeth into somewhere, the sharp iron tang of blood filling his nostrils. Fortuna must be with his smaller opponent, his claws had missed them barely but his teeth had hit their mark. Pulling his head back without letting go with a powerful jerk, he was trying to unbalance his foe. If they fell onto the ground, Tezcalipoca would stomp his foot on them, hooking a claw into them to seal their fate as a sitting duck. If they forced themselves out of the prairie’s jaws, then Tezcalipoca would move a foot forward to launch his body forward to lash out with the sharp claws on his hands and his deadly fangs. A jaguar once they began their move in hunting their prey did not relent until the deed was done and their prey’s blood was coating their fur.

Pain exploded across Blacky’s neck where massive javs were digging down into his flesh. He hissed in discomfort and as he was being pulled back, he noticed that only part of the teeth had dug down and most were resting on the armor, be it pressing down hard and putting a lot of pressure though the thick metal. As the prairie attempted another pull, Blacky jerked to the side and the straps gave in, leaving Tezcalipoca with the piece of armor in his mouth. But with no time to catch his breath, B dodged the charging prairie, barely avoiding the swiping claws and ran under the giant and up behind. He felt his neck, warm and wet, and the smell of iron clung to him but still he kept running, the amber rook closing in behind him as a great pillar covered in vines did the same up ahead.

The past battle flashed in the back of Blacky’s mind, but now he was able to focus on the pulsating pain in his neck, the numbness spreading and the adrenaline filling him with extra strength. He was determined not to let this battle end just yet and certainly not with his opponent unmarked.

With a strong kick Blacky kicked off the ground and bounced on the pillar, making a complete u turn towards the unsuspecting giant who had caught up to him. He reached out for the kirin horn and clung to it, biting down on his left ear and attempting to claw down on the face, aiming for the eye.
