I have always been a fan of the novella "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde."

This story has a great message about two things: we all battle between the taming of oneself (being civilized and gentle natured) vs the inner demons and desires of the mind (free of all morality or civility), and that clinging on to a vice can lead to devastating consequences. The reason I say this about its second message is because Jekyll uses a serum he created to transform between himself and Mr. Hyde, which he ultimately became dependent on to the point where he needed more and more of it to prevent the transformation from happening without it.

That is to say, the potions purpose was to transform him but he got so addicted to it that it was now used for the opposite: prevent the transformation.

Now some of you may think it is strange that Hyde is smaller than Jekyll here. That is actually because he is described that way in the novella.
