Meeting Rita

Cindy walks up to Kirianna’s house.

CINDY

It was nice of Kirianna to invite me over to meet her cousin.

Cindy knocks on the door. Kirianna opens the door.

KIRIANNA

Cindy. Glad you could make it.

CINDY

Howdy Kirianna. Hope I ain’t late.

KIRIANNA

No not at all. Please come in.

Cindy walks in.

Cut To

Kirianna closes the door.

KIRIANNA

My cousin’s in the living room.

CINDY

Great. It’ll be nice to meet her.

KIRIANNA

I just thought I let you know my cousin is blind.

CINDY

Oh sorry to hear that. Well don’t y’all worry. I ain’t goin’ to make fun of her.

KIRIANNA

Oh thats great. Thanks.

They go into the living room and see Rita Lion sitting on the couch. She’s a female lion wearing a light blue sleeveless shirt and green blue skirt. She is wearing black sunglasses and has a walking stick next to her.

KIRIANNA

Rita?

Rita turns her head to the left after hearing Kirianna’s voice.

RITA

Yeah cousin.

KIRIANNA

My friend Cindy Wolf is here.

RITA

Really? Well (gets up and holds up her hand) it’s nice to meet you.

Cindy holds up her hand and shakes Rita’s hand.

CINDY

A pleasure meetin’ ya too Rita.

RITA

Boy your hands are pretty cool.

CINDY

Yeah the weather is cold (lets go of Riat’s hand) outside.

RITA

I was outside two days ago walking with my parents when it snowed. I felt it on my foot paws and the snowflakes on my nose. The snow was nice.

Kirianna helps her cousin sit back down.

RITA

Kirianna it’s okay I can sit myself down.

KIRIANNA

I just didn’t want you to miss the couch.

Kirianna sits next to her while Cindy sits on a chair. Kirianna puts both Rita’s foot paws on a foot stool.

RITA

Thanks cousin, but you didn’t have to go through all this trouble.

KIRIANNA

You’re family and we just want to make certain you don’t get hurt.

RITA

I know. I just wish I wasn’t blind at all. Cindy would you like to hear how I became blind in the first place.

CINDY

Naw don’t worry ‘bout it. I don’t want to invade yer privacy.

RIATA

Relax. I’m okay with it.

KIRIANNA

I’ll go get some sodas.

Kirianna leaves the room.

RITA

Well when I was born I was able to see everything. That all changed when I was little and my parents took me to the zoo. We visited a snake exhibit and it was cool. I was looking at a cobra cage.

CINDY

What happened?

RIATA

We didn’t know the cage was open and the cobra lifts his head and sprayed venom on both of my eyes. It was a spitting cobra.

Cindy could not believe it.

CINDY

That ain’t good.

RITA

Indeed it wasn’t. My eyes were in a lot of pain. My parents took me to the hospital. The doctors did the best they could, but the venom in my eyes got so bad I was (removing her sunglasses to reveal her blind grey eyes) blind.

CINDY

So they couldn’t fix yer eyes?

RITA

They tried. I had 12 operations. Nothing would work. They said I (puts her sunglasses back on) could never see again.

CINDY

So sorry to hear that.

RITA

Thanks. My dad was furious at the zoo and threatened to sue them, but they got rid of the cobra and fired whoever didn’t close it. They gave discounts and free gift cards. Still I wish I could see.

CINDY

That must’ve been pretty hard.

RITA

It’s not all that bad. I can still hear, smell, taste, and touch. My parents gave me books that have dots so that I can figure out what the words are, I have a stick to help me feel the ground. I can also picture in my mind what animal or person is near by. We’ve been going to movies where they have a narrator describing what the characters are doing. My family has also helped me out as best as they could.

CINDY

That’s great news.

RITA

Yeah. Even though I can’t see. Life hasn’t been very hard.

CINDY

Glad to know that.

Kirianna comes in with three cans of coke. The third one has a straw in it.

KIRIANNA

Here’s your soda Rita.

RITA

Oh (holds up her hand to feel the can and then grabs it) thanks.

Rita tries to feel the straw with her lips but couldn’t feel anything. The straw is facing the other way.

RITA

Kirianna is there a straw? I can’t feel it.

KIRIANNA

Oh. Silly me. It’s (moves the straw to face Rita’s lips) facing the wrong way.

RITA

Ah thanks again.

KIRIANNA

No problem.

Cut To

An hour later, Cindy walks out the door.

CINDY

Much obliged fer introducin’ me to yer cousin Kirianna.

KIRIANNA

No problem. I’ll bring her over to your house to meet your parents, the next time she visits.

CINDY

That’ll be great. See y’all later.

After Cindy walks out, Kirianna closes the door and walks back to the living room.

KIRIANNA

So Rita (sits next to her) did you want to hear a movie until mom and dad gets home from taking the puppies to the doctor?

RITA

That sounds fun. Which movie?

KIRIANNA

Well we got Secret Life of Pets and Zootopia.

RITA

Maybe Zootopia please.

KIRIANNA

Good idea.
