I'm from a Baptist church and never heard of it, lol. We study the Bible every week and there's nothing like that.

People are confused with that part that says Jesus descended to the lowest parts of earth (Ephesians 4:9). Then people think Jesus went to Hell, but that's wrong. Paul is just saying that Jesus came to the Earth from Heaven (descended) and returned after his sacrifice. Jesus always taught that once the body dies, the soul goes to a specific destination and stays there, heaven or hell. So it wouldn't make sense if Jesus went to hell. Also, there's no other place like purgatory or limbo, at least not on the Bible or in Jesus' speeches. 

The notion of purgatory arose because the Bible says that nothing impure can enter Heaven (Revelations 21:27). But the Bible also says that Jesus died to cleanse us from all our sins, so Jesus paid the price for all our sins, past and future. Those who have accepted Jesus as their Savior have no more condemnation (Romans 8: 1-2, Titus 2:14). This does not mean that we can continue sinning without consequences. Regret is not just being sad with your sin; it implies a decision to change. Those who are really sorry do not want to sin anymore because they want to please God. This is regret. Whoever is saved still sins, but who confesses their sins to God receives forgiveness (1 John 1: 8-9).

About a key in Hell, well, in Revelations we read about Abadom (also called Apollion), an angel who has the keys of Hell, who doesn't let the demons left hell until the Judgement Day. But that's a different thing. Revelation is almost entirely metaphorical. It describes spiritual truths that we can't understand without metaphors. Jesus used it a lot, as "parables". For example, Mathews 5,6 and 7. There's a lot of metaphors there. So, a key in hell is a metaphor to say that God has control over hell and will unleash it in the Judgement Day. All the saved ones will be with Him and the condemned will receive their punishment.

And yeah, Hell is not the punishment yet. The hell as we know from mythologies (like Hel and Hades), movies, comic books, Dante Alighieri, famous pictures, has nothing to do with the Bible. Actually, this is mix of pagan religions and bad interpretation of the bible. Hell is not a place, it's a condition where the soul live without a body and far away from God. There is suffering, because the person now is sure that God exists and that the chance for regret and salvation is just for the living. So, according to the Bible, people can only get rid of this fate if they accept Jesus as their savior, while living here on earth. 


Well, I know I wrote a lot but I'd like to say that I'm not offended by anything about Hell that is wrong. That's your universe, you imagined it. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying that the information we get from pop culture is different from the Bible. See this huge comment just as a new information And if you get curious, search on the Bible. I gave you the references

Woah, that's cool and I never really thought of Hell as a condition instead of a place. That...makes some sense honestly. Granted I'm not a religious fella (Very much, I do believe in a higher power, just not sure what that power may be in terms of a religious figure ect.) But I do find it fun to learn about new interesting topics in relation to such thing so it's fine. ^^

Just to complement, hell is the destination for all sinners before the Judgement Day. And EVERYONE is a sinner. God didn't made us this way, He made Adam and Eve pure in the Garden of Eden. But when they first sinned, God punished them with Death. He exiled them from his presence (the Garden of Eden) so they became mortals . So since them, the human body dies. Everyone who was born (before Adam & Eve) were born as sinners (it's like a spiritual disease), but we'll only be judged according to the sins we did, not because of a spiritual condition. We do decide to sin, that's why the judgement.

This stands till today. And that's why God started teaching about animal sacrifices (an innocent being dying for your sins instead of you), the 10 Commandments (teaching people about what's sin and what's not), and finally He sent his Son (who obeyed the Commandments and died as innocent) as the final solution for the sin problem. Just at that time, people were ready to believe on Him, it wouldn't make sense sending Him early . 

So, if Death is the natural consequence for sinning, then Jesus couldn't really die. That's why He was resurrected. The same is for anyone who believes in Christ and get baptized. Cause baptism means that the old you (the sinner) died with Jesus and a new you (a pure soul) was born now. It works like being born again, directly created by God. So the souls of the saved ones will be on Heaven after their body deaths, waiting for the Judgement Day when they will receive their new bodies (now without any sin).

Jesus defeated Death and God gave us the solution for our own problems . Everyone was born far away from God, but believing in Christ we reach Salvation by changing our spiritual nature. All this changing can be done only by God. There's nothing we can do for it. Ephesians 2:8-10 & the gospel of John 3:16-18.
