My first critique, so bear with me?
First off, I love the photo, quite the classic with the big horse and little horse. I love the colors and the action of the lip, I think your higher shutter speed was a good choice as it allowed the picture to be nice and sharp- which always improves a photo like this. The details, the hair on the horses, the chain on the lock, the texture of the wood, I appreciate all of these and they certainly improve the photo drastically.
As far as what I would 'change', I would lower the ISO. You had room to go, by dropping the ISO (even on your snazzy camera) it would improve the color/quality of the photo. I would consider dropping the Shutter Speed to around 1/200 or so, which would still capture the minimal movement in this photo with sharpness. Additionally bump the Aperture just a touch (around 8) so that the horses are as sharp as the fence. Lastly I wish the Appaloosa's head was in full view, the merger of the ears is a touch bothering. A less zoomed in view would have fixed this, the Appaloosa just looks like he's falling off the frame.
I'm not sure if you photoshop much or not, but by raising some of the tones, particularly mid-tones, perhaps contrast you could improve the color. It's not 'out of camera' natural, but personally I love just adding the 'umph' to colors to make the pictures really stick in the viewers mind.
Overall I think this picture is a capture of a wonderful moment and caught at a perfect time. It is technically strong and certainly a frame-able piece (particularly if I owned these guys!). It's just so sweet and ah-freakin' adorable.
