Description Form study from Matt Kohr's CTRL + PAINT Premium Basic Rendering 2 Course.

I'm wondering if the shadows are cast/positioned correctly.

I didn't spend much time on the actual rendering of the forms, I'm just struggling with projecting shadows.

Hi There, I discovered you when I was doing a goggle search to see how other people approached this image.  I found you and I noticed you got a lot wrong. In an attempt to help you, you actually helped me! You got me thinking about all the things that are going on in the image and it helped push me.

I did out a few examples that should help you to think about the image.

Did you just purchase Basic Rendering 2 on it's own? Because you seem to struggle with perspective too.
Everything I mention is covered in the videos for Basic Rendering 2. Video 4 is interesting because it touches on 3 types of lighting: Sun (Directional), Candle (point) and Light box (area). All challenging, but can be fun too when using an airbrush.

I'm not a professional, so my work won't be perfect. I started the Ctrl+Paint videos to make sure I didn't miss anything in my knowledge. I'm good at some stuff, but not great. So I'm doing a load of tutorials and courses to help improve myself. But I hope I can help somehow with my notes (or at least it gets you thinking how to approach your image).

I wonder if you understood the videos. Matt says to not leave the background white. The idea is that you change the background colour so that you can use white for other things (such as adding hot spots / areas directly lit by the light source).
I have come across a number of artists that also recommend not working on a white canvas.

The perspective ins't vital here, and I think Matt just roughly put some into the image. But for you, it's worth going and studying more. I have to admit, it's something I struggle with too, but it's vital if we want to paint great environments.

Go through all the free videos too. I have been using Photoshop for nearly 15 years and I'm still learning new tricks from Ctrl+Paint.

* my apologies for any typing mistakes in the images. I normally use spell-check but I didn't this time.

I hope I was of some help.

So helpful. How did you determine the shadow shape of the sphere onto the ground? I understand how to use the guidelines on the sides, I’m just unsure how wide to make the ellipse.

The answer to that question is "perspective."
To be honest, I didn't think about that shadow on the ground. I just automatically assumed the shape and size since it's just a simple sphere and drew and ellipse. I eye-balled it based on my years of drawing bottles and jars back when I was in school (Highschool / secondary school). Not the most accurate way to do it, but it's quick.
I also have an understanding of perspective from other school subjects, but I don't know what the subject might be called in your country (technically drawing / construction drawing).

A great book get on perspective is "How to Draw Drawing and Sketching Objects and  Environments" by Scott Robertson.

You might have seen the book recommended by other artists.  It's very technical, but Robertson aims to teach how to do it all free-hand, so you won't be stuck drawing grids like I have here (normally, I only ever stick in a grid like this if I'm doing large environments, since I struggle with environments such as cities).

And on the topic of perspective and drawing an ellipse, don't forget, no sharp corners.
Naturally, the more acute the eclipse gets, the sharper the corners may appear, but do your best to avoid it when drawing in other angles.

Just saw your message now.

Wow thank you for such detailed feedback on that.

I feel like I did the Ctrl+Paint ages ago, certainly hundreds of hours of practice back, but I'm sure I still have a lot to learn about light, shadow, perspective and all the rest yet. I've started using a toned canvas since then.

Anyway, I appreciate all the diagrams and everything, I will have to look this all over again later in more detail as I don't have a lot of time right now.

I will have to go back and re-try those videos soon, too.
