It's sort of like, Victorian style, but with a twist? I dunno how to describe it.. It does tend to have a lot of keys and gears involved, and cool technology that doesn't actually exist but we all wish it did xD The literal definition is a genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology, but I think it's really cool

My friend Ruth and I are dressing steampunk for Halloween because she always hosts Halloween parties and who says that your too old to dress up?! haha
Sorry to ramble so much, I guess its just a really fun topic xD You can kind of get a feel for it by looking up pictures of steampunk art and cosplay and the like on the internet..
