History and Design
The RAM 82 was constructed with several goals in mind. The primary goal was a low price per unit, the second being reliability and the third, low weight. With arms ownership and militia membership being extremely common in the Free Territory, Yaaqtuk Heavy Industrial Manufacturing hoped to provide a rifle that everyone could make use of. A secondary aim was to export the rifle and the equipment needed to manufacture it to nations that required a rifle of the RAM82s specifications. The rifle has found much success in the domestic market and has become the weapon of choice for the Free Territory’s militiamen.

Construction

LOWER RECEIVER
The lower consists of a single piece of sturdy polyamide with a rubber pad on the end of the stock to absorb felt recoil and provide a firm grip on an operator’s shoulder. There are two lower receivers manufactured by Yaaqtuk Heavy Industrial Manufacturing, the “1” type receiver and the “2” type. With the former featuring a solid stock and the latter featuring a skeletonised folding stock made from steel. It’s simple polyamide construction means it is both inexpensive to manufacture and is very lightweight. The lower does not face much stress as it only houses the fire control unit and the magazine. The Hand guard is also manufactured form the same polyamide.

UPPER RECEIVER
The Upper can be made from stamped steel or steel tubing of appropriate dimensions, further simplifying construction if the machinery is already in place. The upper houses the only machined parts of the rifle, the bolt+carrier and the barrel.

FIRING MECHANISM AND BARREL
The fire control unit, made entirely from stamped steel, is housed in the lower. The Bolt, carrier and piston is manufactured from machined steel. The bolt face itself is triangular, making manufacture simpler while still providing a solid lock on the breech. The barrel is chrome lined, although this increases the cost slightly, it improves the function and reliability of the rifle. It is secured to the trunion by a nut that can be removed without specialist tools. The muzzle of the barrel is threaded and comes with a flash hider as standard.

Operation
The RAMM82 utilises the gas-powered long-stroke piston form of operation. When a round is fired, surplus gasses from ignited propellant are diverted into a chamber which houses the end of the piston. The force from this gas pushes back the piston which is directly attached to the bolt carrier. The bolt carrier is propelled backwards, the spent cartridge is ejected and the hammer is re-set, then the recoil spring drives the bolt carrier forward, simultaneously stripping a fresh round from the magazine and chambering it. The bolt locks into the chamber and the rifle is ready to fire again.

Field Stripping
Field Stripping the RAMM82 can be achieved by pressing the stud located behind the rear sight. While pressing the stud, pull the upper reviver upwards so that it pivots on the lower (taking care to cover the rear of the upper with a free hand to prevent the recoil spring from shooting out of the rifle). Unscrew the charging handle on top of the bolt and set it aside. Ease the recoil spring out of the rifle and then slide the bolt carrier out of the rear. The upper can be easily detached from the lower by pushing out the self-retaining pin found in front of the magazine well.

Features

The features of the RAMM82 are simple. The adjustable rear sight features two pre-zeroed options of 100 and 300 metres. The reciprocating charging handle is located on the top of the bolt carrier and protrudes through a slot in the upper, giving the rifle a degree of ambidexterity. The fire selector is located on the lower receiver above the pistol grip and can be manipulated by the operator's thumb. It has Safe, Semi, and Automatic options. Due to the rifle's simple construction, it is easy to repair or modify with rudimentary knowledge of machining and tools. For example, a common modification made by militia members in the free territory is to move the charging handle to the either one or both sides of the bolt (and cutting adequate space for it), so that modern optic mounts can be added to the upper receiver. If the lower receiver is of the appropriate dimensions, Uppers that fulfil other roles can be fitted. For example, the RAM82SMG upper designed for the intermediate calibre lower. Which changes the firearm into a simple, blowback operated submachine gun.
A wide variety of aftermarket parts are available for the RAM82, meaning that the stock rifle can easily be altered to fit an operators needs and preferences.

Looks a LOT more like an FAL to me! In fact- I pretty much have both concepts- the HK and the L1A1 FAL that look like what the 2nd from the bottom~ OF course, that makes me happy, because I like the "fantasy" weapons to be based in reality, whenever possible!

If anything, the main inspiration for this rifle is the Leader Dynamics T2.

I had thought about them, but they were sued repeatedly by both Aramalite and FN due to patent infringement. Still and all, they did make an interesting gun- which I had nearly forgotten about! I saw one a few years back at a gun show in Las Vegas, not a one since... Wonder what they are worth now?

I've seen them go for between $700 and $1700. A fair price considering its simplicity, suppose that's just because they're a rarity.

Yeah- of course, here it's an election year, so every gun freak (which I am not, despite working in the gun show business...) will snatch up anything that looks like an AR... I remember thinking that these were so cool! Maybe I ought to add one to my collection? Yes, yes I think I should!
