Personality: (Taken from his old gym leader sheet) Born and raised in Barcroft town, Monte is exactly what you expect from someone who lives in the desert town. Loud, Brash, Full of bad and often inappropriate jokes and so accustomed to the lifestyle there that nothing much phases him anymore!
Affectionately known by many as "Sand Dad" he looks after everyone in the town and has an incredible way with words, he even jokes that he could talk his way out of a brawl with a garchomp! Though thankfully he hasn't found the time to actually try and test that theory yet. He has many contacts all over the region and several children via different mothers who visit now and then. (Another reason for the sand dad nickname!)

| BADGES |

Former leader of the Barcroft gym.

| HISTORY |

Monte grew up on a ranch in Barcroft. It was a typical family life, at least until the day his parents disappeared; when they went out into the desert, and never returned. Search parties were dispersed, yet all they could find was their abandoned vehicle, half buried in the sand. After a week, they were declared dead and the search was called off, despite never recovering their bodies. Just like that, a once happy family was shattered. Ten-year-old Monte was left in the care of his older sister, Terra.
At 17, all of Terra's future plans came screeching to a halt. Left as the sole provider for the two of them, she ended up taking a job opening at the Barcroft gym. Her years of rodeo experience helped earn her a spot as one of the pokemon handlers.
The gym leader was impressed by her dedication to juggle school, work and raising her little brother; so much so that he took her under his wing as his personal apprentice. He had been planning to retire soon and believed she would be the perfect person to replace him. It would also mean she would never have to worry about their financial situation. Terra agreed and a year later, she was named the new Barcroft gym leader.
While his sister managed to keep herself busy, Monte was having a harder time adjusting. He had always been prone to getting up to mischief before, but now it was happening much more frequently. He even tried to show off to the other kids by taking on the Test of Courage, which was something usually only teenagers did. However his attempt at stealing an onix egg backfired and he had to be rescued by his sister and her mudsdale.
To his surprise, she didn’t make him get rid of the egg. He was allowed to keep it on the condition that he was 100% responsible for the pokemon. Terra hoped that letting him have a pokemon of his own of would keep him busy enough to stay out of trouble. It seemed to work, for the most part. While he would still occasionally get into trouble, it at least tended to be on a more manageable scale.

Over time the little family adapted to their new life. Terra had become a well loved and respected gym leader, both in Barcroft and within the League itself. She eventually married and had a son of her own, Dustin.
Unfortunately, it was only a couple years later that tragedy struck their family yet again. The day Terra suddenly collapsed during the middle of a gym battle. The only sign anything had been wrong was that she had complained of a headache earlier that morning. Monte was left in charge of his nephew while his brother-in-law and the on-site medical crew rushed her to the hospital.
After multiple tests and dead ends, Terra was ultimately diagnosed with a rare neurological disease. Although treatment could help alleviate her symptoms, it was considered terminal. She was only 28. Their family was devastated.
A couple days after the diagnosis, Terra pulled him aside and told him that she planned on stepping down as gym leader. She didn't know how much time she was going to have left, so she wanted to spend as much of it as she could with her family, especially her son. She also wanted him to become the next gym leader.
Monte was shocked. While he’d occasionally help out around the gym, he wasn't sure if he could pull off running the place. But she believed in him, so if this was something she really wanted, he'd accept. He started officially training under her and worked his ass off to learn everything as quickly as possible. While Terra was impressed with his dedication, she was a bit worried that he was burning himself out.
Shortly before she was to retire, she approached Monte with an envelope. Inside were plane tickets to Unova. She had been cleaning up and came across their parent's old journal. It turns out before they disappeared, they had been planning a family vacation to Castelia City, including a trip to the castle in the desert just north of the city. It gave her the idea to book him a vacation, as a gift for how hard he’d been working these past couple months. Monte was hesitant, but after a bit of arguing, he finally agreed to the trip.
When he got to Castelia City he wasn't quite sure what to do, until he met a feisty little red-head named Amelia Cendrine. They were attending the same free concert and hit it off right away. By the end of the night she was inviting him back to her place.
The next morning he offered to buy her breakfast and soon what was meant to be a one time thing turned into the entire week, and it had been the most fun he'd had in a long time.
He tried his best to ground himself, to remember that this was only temporary and not get too involved in his emotions, but damn if she wasn't making it hard. It was enough for him to suggest they try and continue their relationship long distance once it came time for him to leave.
She turned him down. Even though he knew she most likely would, it still stung a little.
Upon returning to Issho, he found himself sick with the worst flu of his life which further delayed his transition to gym leader by nearly another month. Eventually though, he was able to take over for his sister right before her health began to decline. The treatments were becoming less effective, yet she still tried to stay positive for her family. She was a fighter until the end, but she eventually succumbed to her illness and passed away mid-January, not even a full year after he had taken over.
If losing his parents had been tough, losing his sister was devastating. She had always been the rock for their family but now that she was gone, everything began to crumble. Monte often found himself at ends with his brother-in-law, who was not handling the grief well (not that he was doing much better himself). Terra’s husband seemed to determine the only way to cope was to try and block as many memories of her as possible. It wasn’t long after the funeral that he announced that he was taking Dustin and moving back to Union City, his hometown. He also wanted Monte to have as little contact with his nephew as possible, only the occasional holiday if he was lucky.
Things also weren't much better at the gym. The League had adored his sister, but only saw him as her irresponsible little brother. He soon learned the only reason they even allowed him to take her place was to honor her dying wish.
Miserable and lonely, he eventually found himself dating a woman named Susan Roslyn, an archeologist who had just moved to Barcroft. Their relationship was far from healthy, as he had only jumped in due to loneliness while she only cared about how his position within the League could benefit her. It would have been short lived, had Susan not wound up pregnant. At that point she practically cornered him and demanded they get married. Monte agreed, mainly for the sake of their child, though part of him hoped it would help mend their relationship as well. In the end, it only made it worse.
The only bright spot was the birth of his son, Tyler. Yet what should've been a chance for him and Susan to finally come together only drove them apart even further, due to their very different ideas of parenting. Explosive arguments became a nightly occurrence until it inevitably ended in a long, messy divorce when Tyler was just a little over a year old.
The entire experience made him cautious of long term relationships, as he never wanted to go through something like that again. From that point on his love life consisted solely of short flings and one night stands. Even when those relationships resulted in children, he chose to remain single, though he still tried to be an active part of his kids’ lives.

While the early years of his adult life were marred with tragedy and hardships, eventually things began to improve. Once it became apparent to the League that they couldn't scare him off so easily, they begrudgingly accepted him as part of the gym circuit and over time he became one of the most popular and well liked gym leaders. As the other gym leaders shifted and changed throughout the years, many newcomers started turning to him for advice.
He was even able to reconnect with his nephew, as Dustin took on the gym challenge once he got older.
However in recent years, tensions began to build as the rise of the shadow virus caused unrest throughout the region. The attack on Union City caused many people to challenge and question the League's authority, including a group calling themselves Team Zephyr. The failed vaccine, and the following malamar attack on Starlight Marina, only made everything worse.
And then things hit way too close to home. A group of renegade Zephyr followers were apprehended attempting to poison the Oasis, Barcroft's only water supply. His 16-year-old daughter, Melinda, was one of them. Not only were the residents of Barcroft outraged, but he also had the authorities suddenly investigating him as a potential suspect.
While it was eventually determined that his daughter had acted on her own accord, he still couldn’t help feeling somewhat responsible. Melinda had resulted from an affair he’d had prior to his and Susan’s divorce, which was something he tried to keep secret, even long afterwards. Looking back, he had to admit that he might not have treated Melinda as fairly as his other children because of that. It left him wondering if he could've prevented this whole thing from happening if he had only done something differently.
Then midway through the investigation, another child caught him by surprise. This time it was a 19-year-old-girl from Castelia who bore a striking resemblance to the woman he had briefly dated all those years ago. That’s when he learned that Tyler was not actually his eldest child. It was this girl, Tori, that he had fathered with Amelia two years prior. Though while the news was shocking, he couldn't say it was unwelcome.
Tori, however, was much less receptive; as her reason for coming to Issho had nothing to do with him. She was completing the League circuit as part of a joint region probation program. Their relationship was something she had only recently discovered through her mother.
Despite Tori’s animosity, Monte still attempted to form a connection with her. Something about her behavior had caught his attention. Clearly she had already gone down a rough path, given she was on probation, but she also reminded him a lot of how he had acted back when he felt alone in the world. The lingering guilt from what happened with Melinda may also have driven him to reach out to her.
Even though it was a rough start, Tori eventually warmed up to him.

A bit of time passed and as much as he hoped things would have settled down, that unfortunately was not the case. After the League had come out with the truth about the failed vaccine, they quickly began making several administrative changes in attempts to recoup some of their lost PR. He’d been doing this long enough to know that his career was in jeopardy. The Oasis incident was already a huge mark against him, and while he had managed to smooth things over with most of Barcroft's citizens by that point, the rest of the region was a different story. However his gym had also recently been caught in the fallout of yet another scandal. This time involving members of the Prehistoric Research Facility (many of which were business partners of the gym) being part of a fossil smuggling ring.
His suspicions were confirmed when he caught wind of a rumor that the higher ups at the League were preparing to fire him. He was able to get one step ahead of them by choosing to retire first. This way, he’d be able to name his successor. He knew the people of Barcroft wouldn’t be happy with a stranger being brought in by the League, especially when doing so often involved everyone at the gym being replaced. Him stepping down meant that everyone would get to keep their jobs, and the gym would go to somebody that he could trust to take care of it.
Most importantly, he knew the League wouldn’t refuse him. They were so desperate to get back into the public’s good graces that a gym leader choosing to step down would catch far less negative media attention than one being fired.
He ended up choosing one of his long time apprentice trainers, Devan Suertes, to become the next gym leader. Although his time in the League had ended more bitterly than he would’ve liked, he knew he could count on Devan to carry the torch in a way that would make everyone proud. As for himself, he’s looking forward to now being able to spend more time with his kids.

| TRIVIA |

*The proud father of 13 children ranging in age from 19-5. About half of them live in Barcroft while the other half are spread out across the region.

*While he does tend to be closer with his kids that also live in Barcroft, he makes sure to keep in touch with his other kids and often has them come visit during the summer. Tyler though, is clearly the child he's the closest with.

*He will neither confirm, nor deny, that Madeline was the one that tipped him off about the League planning to fire him. He’ll just say there can be certain benefits to being BFFs with a powerful psychic.

*He and Professor Bonsai have never gotten along. Monte claims it’s because he accidentally broke one of Bonsai’s windows when he was 11 and he’s never forgiven him since. Bonsai claims it’s because Monte is an idiot. Monte is low-key terrified of the old man.

*His team being all female while Terra’s team was all male wasn’t something they planned, it just ended up that way. After her death, he took over caring for her pokemon since her husband didn’t want them.

*Thanks to Dustin, he was eventually able to make amends with his brother-in-law and the two of them remain on good terms

*Unbeknownst to their family, Terra’s death was actually caused by a beta airborne strain of the shadow virus. Before Team Zephyr was known to the public, one of it’s early members posed as gym challenger and used an infected vileplume to spread the virus. However most people/pokemon that came into contact with it fully recovered without any shadowing, while a small percent eventually died due to neurological damage. The same virus is what caused Monte’s “mystery flu” after his trip to Castelia, possibly the pressure from the plane aggravating it. The strain was eventually discarded after being deemed too unreliable.

*At one point during his trip, he and Amelia smuggled a baby sandile into Castelia City. He brought her home and she grew into a Krookodile that dwarfed the Issho ones. He named her Mia in Amelia's honor. (No, she doesn't know about that and yes, she will be pissed when she finds out )
