Sure, you could go crazy and make some MLP-themed wth-this-is-epic-animation .. but I mean you're successful without that and it would only increase your popularity in the brony fandom, which still isn't all of the Internet

A memorable Username and style.
An Avatar that isn't too complicatied (To draw/understand).
And helping to animate the ASDF video's will certainly give you a new lease of life and a push in the right direction!
You don't need to follow ALL the fads in order to become popular...although it definitely helps a lot.

It all depends on your audience(s). You have to find the right audience to become "internets" popular.
For example, Team Fortress 2 found its audience of enthusiastic FPS players who like it simple but challenging.
Minecraft found its audience of gamers who love creating things.
MLP: Friendship is Magic found its audience of animated cartoon enthusiasts who love a light-hearted but meaningful story in animation.
