Description as i kid i loved scooby doo and the gang, i grew up watching the version where they were all kids called "a pup named scooby doo" and loved it to death. since then they've had live action movies, some great and some not so great cartoon movies, and a couple of so-so cartoon shows , but that made way for the new version of screen know called "scooby doo mystery incorporated" if you hadn't check it out it's everything that makes the gang great plus more.

so in watching the show, i got to miss the pup named scooby doo more and more, and when i checked them out online i found out that that show was suppose to have the gang in their early teens' but to me it never felt that way i always thought that they were in grade school.

so i took that as a challenge to design the crew as if they were in the 7th grade.
i keep their designs as simple and as true to their characters as possible, the only one i didn't truly changed was scooby doo himself, for him I just drew a version of the pup form I remember. as for the rest of the game i based them off kids i went to school with, i made shaggy the thin awkward kid, Daphne i made into the popular girl who tried to flirt with boys and be mean to to the girls and Fred the typical jock kid that was in all the sports.
out of all of them Velma's my favorite. i drew her in her trademarked big sweater, and tried to give her the cutest damn haircut possible and come off with a 'shy-girl in the corner' vibe.
but as i was drawing it i asked myself, what if she's self-conscious, like what if she 'developed' really early, at that's the reason she's always covered herself up. i mean, what her legs are never cold, just her top? there had to a reason for it

anyway i think the gang came out great and if they ever did a mystery inc in jr high, i think this might serve as a reference.

Too awesome! Makes me wish they would have a flashback episode so we could see these guys as young(er) kids again! Or maybe they'll use these designs in the next show.

I especially love Velma's design; it's so cute! She doesn't dress to impress, she dresses for comfort (the turtleneck and skirt) and utility (the boots).

I found they destroyed it with the new show! Thelma and Shaggy dating, WTF?!?! And Daphnie is an only child, the characters are horable drawn and the voices are completly off. THe plots are ok, but Daphnie isn't that strong with feeling of Fred. It seems the designers, producers, and writers just looked a picture of them for half a second and started from there. And the live in Coolsville, not "Crystal Cove." I mean WTF?

i like the voice for shaggy
he's the guy from the film, so 'for me' it gives the character more range seeing as how he's playing the character not like other guys not just a horrible shaggy impression that can only give ya the catch phrases and then just butchers the rest of the performance.

but as for the coolsville and not crystal cove, i'm totally with you.

they only way i think they can fix it is by saying they live in coolsville which is part of crystal cove county

And they only thing I hate about the liveaction movie is that Fred is now suddenly Brunette. W.T.F. Why did they cast him?

Robbie Amel did that because he looked like a ken doll when he died his hair he would have done it but he didn't want to look like a living toy and the producers agreed also in SD2 they imply in the live action AU Fred dyes his hair
Also mystery inc is an AU reboot Scrappy is only nutso in AU's What's New Scooby Doo ends with the Goblin King and that is where i end my canon of Scooby Doo before going to AUs

I wrote that comment almost 3 years ago. I'm impressed you found it.

But I still feel strongly about the subject. Scooby Doo was literally my childhood. I have every movie since I was born on VHS still and the newer ones (until about Pirates Ahoy because after that they started butchering the franchise) on DVD.

While I didn't know that you that fact about Robbie Amel, I'm still entitled to the opinion to either cast a blonde actor, dye his hair, or wear a wig. Scooby Doo is a franchise extending from 1969 to present day. Each character has a physical appearance that needs to be kept up to match up to Hanna and Barbera's original visions for their characters. Part of Fred, as shallow as this is, is his looks. To begin with, Scooby Doo was based on stereotyping of the characters and using their appearance as a drive for this goal. Such as Velma was the brainiac so she was given a shorter, wider frame and glasses to "look the part".

Fred is the all American macho-man. And his school boy clothes, strong frame, and short blond hair helped carry this out. Granted all characters were given more depth as the franchise continued and I don't mind deviation as long as it is still canon to what Hanna and Barbera created in the late 60's.

Changing their appearance and personalities drastically is something I could not stand. And as little as it seems, the brunette hair instead of blond is a large difference.

When it comes to a long standing franchise, such as Scooby Doo, when you do a reboot, you have to shape your actors to the character. I mean if it's a book, I usually don't as much because it's the plot and character development more than appearances but the van and the gang are all iconic images. And messing with an iconic image is almost blasphemy. And I didn't catch that in Scooby Doo 2 I guess. The live actions weren't my favorite so I didn't watch and rewatch over and over again to appreciate them as I did things like implications like I did for Scooby Doo and the Boo Brothers for example.

To be honest, I'm not quite familiar with the abbreviation "AU" so I can't comment on that.

But continuing my rant on this subject:mystery incorporated. That was the final straw for me. I couldn't continue watching the new Scooby Doo's. The animation butchered the art of the character design, the voice actors made it terrible to listen to, they created uncanon relationships (such as VelmaXShaggy), they violated the characters backstories, and they distorted the personalities for "humor" and I use this loosely as it wasn't funny at all. I couldn't get past the first episode, not even the first ten minutes. If you like it, that's fine. But I grew up with early Scooby Doo and it just doesn't do the show justice for me.

I'm not ignorant and I can justify my opinions and I will when called out. Sorry. Long rant is long.

AU means Alternate Universe Mystery Inc is the better AU than the live movie AU, I can at least sit through Mystery Inc better than I can sit through the live action movies, at least Mystery Inc references the original and i think the season 2 finale hinted at What's new Scooby Doo's mysteries, just no one wanted to get their newer looks yet, also the Goblin King which is actually the end of canon for me since it's done in the WNSD style with an idea from the 13 ghosts "real monsters" is used. I think What's New was so successful because it was a remake of the original with places referenced back to the original as well except for Scrappy.

Otter2347 In reply to summerautumn [2013-06-08 16:39:10 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't aware that Mystery Incorporated and the live action took place in separate universes that the originals and What's New.

But it wasn't just the new animation. It was one of several factors in which I couldn't continue to watch Mystery Incorporated. If it were the animation alone-I would have gotten over that. Such as I don't know if you remember Jake Long American Dragon, but that show it was in "What's New Scooby Doo" style first season then in "Mystery Incorporated Style" second season. I was upset about that lower quality of the art, but ultimately I stayed for the plot and character development and it was still a good show.

But Scrappy...only in certain instances did I feel that his character really contributed and wasn't a Mary Sue type (more Mary Sue than Daphne). Those were Boo Brothers and Ghoul School. So exclusion of Scrappy doesn't hurt too much that they left him out.

And I doubt it was a reference to the 13 ghosts of Scooby Doo, it's an idea that probably been floating around for a long time. 13 Ghosts was more of a mini series than anything else.

You're right that idea actually floated around since 1984's new mysteries so they probably decided to add in, and i do remember Jake Long and i did stay for the development and plot but since when did Daphne ever like Fred in the original show? It looked to me as if she liked Shaggy more and Fred liked Velma i don't know if you ship but i do and i'm a Shaphne/Frelma shipper.

Otter2347 In reply to summerautumn [2013-06-09 18:26:39 +0000 UTC]

It was obvious that Fred liked Daphne but I'm pretty sure she was just along for the ride.
Like when they'd split up, Velma would be put in either group but Daphne was ALWAYS put with Fred.

You can ship whatever you what. I'm against no ships. I just don't like when they try to make them "canon" against Hanna and Barbera's wishes.

Well Barbera kind of liked the Fred/Daphne thing as he was involved with What's new Scooby Doo which was actually his last work Chill Out, Pirates Ahoy (the first one done without him), Samurai Sword and Goblin King were the final WNSD episodes per Barbera and Warner Bros. then it gets ugly, but yeah Daphne likes just being friends with Fred.
