Description

The current saddles for certain species of dragons (example: The Shockjaw) aren't really designed for them. They flatten the dragons back spines and hamper their stability (if not their agility) in flight. Trying to ride the dragon bareback doesn't really work either: those spines can also be flattened by the weight of a rider sitting in the wrong spot on the dragons back. Therefore, it makes much more sense for the saddle to hang below the dragon in flight, with the rider using reigns to steer the dragon.

If you're having difficulty reading the labels, going clockwise from the top, we have:

The Snoggletog Saddle (comes with fabric antlers and anklets with bells)

The Saddle of Champions (given to the winners of the clash of clans tournament)

The Defenders Saddle (Now with a Screaming Viking shield boss)

The Novice Saddle (or the basic saddle)

The Riders Saddle (Now with an extra storage compartment)

The Sleek Saddle (the Champions Saddle is a recolored version of this saddle)

The Wild Saddle (A basic saddle with claws/teeth/horns attatched)

The Shockjaw has no Masters Saddle and there are no event saddles apart from the Snoggletog Saddle. I'll probably create a follow up to this sheet with design concepts for the currently non-existent saddles.

This was inspired by a piece of Non-Httyd related concept art that I found while finding reference images for the alternate Zipplebacks. The Dragon in that piece was wearing a generally similar looking saddle and bit setup. I'm not sure if it had a rider or not, but it was... roughly Typhoomerang sized? with blue scales and a head crest. It also lacked forelimbs other than the wings.
