When a writer puts his soul and passion into his work.
It will go unnoticed, often because of its length.
It is a rather sad fact, but a truth nonetheless.
For the simple emotions conveyed in just a few words,
Often hold more sway with those who are emotionally swayed.
There is no depth of the heart, nor a single thought spared.
For the effort placed into a piece that forgoes the winning edge,
For a hint of true meaning.
You will not read this piece and I will not expect you to.
It will not be popular or famous, nor will it see the light of day.
For length is the bane of true poetry,
And that is why so many of my kin have already left.
Thank you however, for reading this;
For you at least took the time to see what I would consider 'truth'.
It is bitter indeed and intensely sad,
But for the you that respects this, I am eternally glad.

Poetry is always a good thing and people should like it more often because as
Leonardo da Vinci once said "Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen."
An artists duty is rather to stay open-minded and in a state where he can receive information and inspiration. You always have to be ready for that little artistic Epiphany. ~Nick Cave

That...DOES seem to be the case on DA at least.Β I've always attributed it to how noticeable it is when very few words say entire volumes worth of thought though, not merely a direct causal relationship with length.Β That doesn't change the fact that longer works are equally valid and unequally appreciated, which is definitely a shame.

Aye, shorter works are powerful and some have great meaning, but length can be a bit of a deterrent on most occasions x'D

I am not sure. There are some cases where it is true. But if people can connect to this piece of writing or have great interest and joy in reading it, it dosen't matter how long the piece of lyric is. It is different from person to person.

I think that is completely true. I've seen a very popular poet around on the front page a few times, who makes clever poetry with wordplay, but honestly it doesn't seem to have much depth. The puns and so on are clever, yes, but don't really tug on the heartstrings. They are just words, stitched into place with haste and little thought.
This is why so much of the literature section is ignored on DeviantART, unless it's shortened or turned into comics. Which is sad really because there are some great stories to tell.

This is somewhat true, but you do get the occasional viewer who will review, even analyse your poems for you. I had one watcher who would review my every poem, if only to ask me what the metaphorical meaning behind them was (and believe me, my poems are long and in depth). I even got a critique one time, my first and only. I still get some love for my poems, and although more feedback would be desirable, I'm not too upset about the shortage.
That's my opinion, at the least...

^w^ thanks for reading over my gallery! +watched, etc.
To be fair, almost any and all comments are extremely analytical/critical/etc, and I find that people don't want to hear it. They just want to be told, "This looks nice, keep up the good work." So that's the majority of what I say. Though if you are interested in having a peer review something, feel free to ask anytime.

It's no problem; your works are authentic and interesting.
It's true that most people don't want to hear it; they just want a comment for the sake of a good comment. It's all they long for. Personally, I like any kind of feedback, so long as it's constructive, shallow or in depth, or a mere favourite, I'm happy. c:
And the same to you; I'd be glad to review your poetry henceforth. Thank you! >u<

It's a tragic result of social media like Twitter and Facebook. Everyone wants a little bit of everything, and not a lot of one thing.
However, I've had wise poetry teachers who taught me that sometimes the best things are created using very few words. Once I even had a teacher make our whole class make a poem each (or at least start one) that was limited to as many characters as the restriction on a single txt message. That way we had to be careful and concise about what we were trying to get across.

Perhaps this is true, but this is what I feel- it is not that only short poems are noticed, but the short ones with a lot to say- because when a poet can say a lot with few words, yet make it musical and poetic, AND bring out his/her point like this, that is an admirable feat. Longer poetry, though having more emotion perhaps, often tends to ramble, and breaks the flow of the words. Beautiful poetry for me, is when each line has something to shout out, each line seems magical and perfect, each line creates a song in your mind. And longer poetry, disappointingly, doesn't do that often.
Of course, this is just my personal view

This piece itself is just my take on things ^^ and I do agree that short poems with emotions are good, but I find that most of the short poetry absolutely lacks that

Of course, I was just standing up for the shorter poetry which manages to do that.... not to say long poems are inferior in any way. I judge poetry on the message it conveys and the beauty it brings out in doing that, not in its length or other such petty factors.

WordOfChen In reply to MoodyPoet [2014-05-30 17:13:34 +0000 UTC]
Of course, I understand what you're getting at because I also appreciate shorter poetry with meaning, but length does play an important part in the long run because the time-factor. Not everyone is as kind as you are to judge impartially, so the longer poetry doesn't always receive as much attention as the short stuff

I didn't care for it honestly, but it does have a good point. Short isn't better than long or vice versa. Still, people who only read or enjoy short poems aren't wrong persay, some people just prefer things that are short and sweet. Taste in art is personal preference, so its silly to criticize people who aren't into certain art forms for not looking at everything.

I can relate much to that, though my words are not those of a poet.
But I would not at all agree that the shorter it is the better... I have my own idols when it comes to the written words and their most outstanding works were long ones indeed.

I actually prefer the shorter ones, often. I don't think a poem has to be ultra long to convey something.
But I've read this Well, it isn't that long to be a turn off. Sometimes length can be.

WordOfChen In reply to Pereyga [2014-05-24 10:37:13 +0000 UTC]
Not ultra long, but it can't be uber short either because then it's really just an emotional hook and little else. Of course that's just my own opinion haha x'D

For me that would be short but not too short (like 4 lines, a few words are just ... a few words xD)
but it depends on the poem itself
I wouldn't judge the quality just by the length anyways xD Maybe it's a matter of taste
