When a writer puts his soul and passion into his work.
It will go unnoticed, often because of its length.
It is a rather sad fact, but a truth nonetheless.
For the simple emotions conveyed in just a few words,
Often hold more sway with those who are emotionally swayed.
There is no depth of the heart, nor a single thought spared.
For the effort placed into a piece that forgoes the winning edge,
For a hint of true meaning.
You will not read this piece and I will not expect you to.
It will not be popular or famous, nor will it see the light of day.
For length is the bane of true poetry,
And that is why so many of my kin have already left.
Thank you however, for reading this;
For you at least took the time to see what I would consider 'truth'.
It is bitter indeed and intensely sad,
But for the you that respects this, I am eternally glad.

I agree wholeheartedly. Its rather ridiculous that the shorter the better.
I believe the most important thing in poetry is the emotions conveyed in a piece.
The emotions that bleed into a piece of poetry, to be bled out so others can see and feeling the same emotions you felt.
The very imagery is important. and can only be properly shown through deep and intense emotions.
I thank you for this. It has moved me.

I wholly agree with this. it's fascinating sometimes how you think you put so much work in a long poem, yet nobody cares to read it. It's the same when it's not an emotional themed poem but on another topic you hold dear and nobody reads it either.
But it's understandable, people like immediacy, that's why they like shortness.

Immediacy is of utmost importance, we live in an age where everything has to be delivered quickly. Even emotions, that's a fact I guess.
Thank you for reading and enjoying this though ^^

I can definitely agree to that, but there still has to be consideration for the longer pieces, after all each poet does put effort into their piece. Not everyone will be the best, but the disparity between shot and long is a little sad I think :/

There's only ONE poem I have thought to be too long, and yet I still read it. "Dante's Inferno" was around 128 pages of poetry

i'm crying right now, you words are true, spoken from the heart. i am a poet to so i understand...i never have short work though anyways as i just don't, my inspiration could go on for pages upon pages if i let it but most times i have to stop it after like six pages....very true. people just don't like to read long emails or texts either, they new generation just isn't taking the time or the knowledge like those of the past. and i am part of the new generation and i see this, i'm only a teenager but i know, i know that my generation will be the ones to worsen or maybe even ruin this world....

I've read so many of those short writings on dA that call themselves 'poetry' that it kinda made me think... "well... don't need even more of that now do I?", so that's kinda one of the reasons I'm not reading many lengthy pieces on dA. Secondly, I wouldn't say that long poetry is necessarily better just because it's longer. And thirdly, well... how to say. This is a busy world. There's a lot going on in it that would be well worth its time looking into, but you only do have so much time. If you're interested in poetry, you're going to search for good poetry no matter its length - but if you aren't into it too deply then, well, reading does take a lot of time and naturally you will be drawn to the shorter pieces.
It's something that all art has to struggle with, I believe - not only art even, but pretty much everything that you want others to engage with. You have to get their attention and interest, you gotta show them that it'll be worth their time. That's just how it is. You might call it sad, maybe it is, but what do you expect? That everyone's gonna spend their lives looking through the endless amount of stuff that is available in every genre there is, just so they may one day find you? Yeah it isn't optimal that many people nowadays seem to prefer shallow entertainment over something with more depth, I totally agree with that, but considering the sheer overload of information and possibilities in this day and age, I'd say it's understandable as well! >3<
(By "you" I don't mean you specifically by the way)

Indeed your opinion is absolutely correct. We do live in a busy world which is why shorter pieces draw more attention and of course, those who are interested in the art form itself will find it no matter what the length of the piece is.
However (and I'm not discounting your opinion of course), I still feel that it causes the art form to suffer on a whole because many people have forgotten the importance of putting in effort into their work. I, and many other writers like myself, can easily make front pagers that would mimic the very basic style of the shorter works, but we choose not to because we want to advance.
Most of the time such work will be ignored and I am completely fine with that, but at present my opinion is able to reach out to many and so I think it's nice to give it a chance to air out there :'3
Thank you for taking the time to express yourself and comment, I appreciate that a lot ^^

- Just to get you right, when you say that 'the art form suffers because many people have forgotten the importance of putting in effort into their work', do you mean it suffers in terms of there being fewer pieces of high quality, or are you concerned that because of that the general public will take it less seriously?
You really are in a good position to reach out though, I totally see that. :'> May I ask what exactly it is that you're aiming for with this deviation? To me it reads a bit like a mixture of "go reach out for longer pieces people, it'll be worth it", "please stop writing 5 lines and calling it poetry", and a very subtle hint of artistic venting. xd
Also thank you for replying to my comment! o A o ) I'm glad you appreciated it and I hope it didn't sound rude!

WordOfChen In reply to Nhizyr [2014-05-24 08:51:48 +0000 UTC]
Well to the first question. I mean it in both ways: You see, people forget the importance of putting in effort and as such, the work released is off lower quality (because they're just looking for an emotional angle or something relatable to throw down. Which you can clearly see with this piece I wrote x'D). This then results in a downward spiral, or as I like to call it, a reverse beauty contest because everyone competes to create the most works, of the lowest quality possible. This then turns off the general public (like you said, even you didn't like it much initially x'D) So in that sense, my statement referred to both .3.
As for reaching out, I guess I am telling people that they should look for more soulful works, they are definitely out there (shamelessly I say, mine included!) but most won't be seen because of the shorter works taking priority. Let's take another example, and we'll talk about art instead. Looking through your gallery, you are (to me at any rate) incredible! Your drawings and paintings are just so warm and polished that I LOVE THEM, but if you were to put up your work versus another one of lower quality, but one that talked about an important emotional issue (let's use bullying) even a crappy drawing about bullying would get about 1,000 faves (I've seen it happen). This stymies progression. Yes, these emotional issues are important, but people forget about the progress of the art itself.
In poetry, where the skill of touching emotions is actually the core component of success, it becomes even more of a reverse beauty contest. Everyone goes for that 'winning edge' and it's really easy to polish it and you can win 24/7, I could do it easily using just a few lines, but that would result in a lack of progression in the type of artform I really want to use (i.e. rap).
And of course I was venting c': Haha! x'D
You're welcome by the way, I like replying to comments because I know you considered my work seriously. Your comment didn't sound rude at all ^^...but I have to confess very little sounds rude because I have learned to just not care about the tone of what was said and to look instead at what was said x'3

Hmm, I'm not a poet myself (obviously), but I do enjoy roleplaying in a literature-like format, I'm not sure if that counts as being a 'writer' (probably not), but at least I have something of an angle. I myself do try to improve my writing all the time, because I really enjoy the language aspect of it - but what if someone is just not interested in the art as an "art" in the Latin sense, as something that requires skill and mastery, but does it for the sake of, say, self-therapy or relaxation? That seems to be the case particularly on dA, so it seems to me (I don't visit any other literature forums though so I cannot compare) - so maybe you're just making a comparison between two things that are on completely different levels? I do admit it annoys me endlessly when such short 'poems' that might as well be just reused comments get comments like "WOW! So true!" and "So deep! I can totally relate, when I was [...]" and "you're such an amazing poet!" - or the worst one, "You just saved my life!!1!", but it does seem to suggest that the people here are primarily on the lookout for something that makes them feel better, not for something that they can admire in an artistic sense? That, in my opinion (again, me not being an actual poet), should be acceptable as well, not everyone does want to improve and not everyone should have to, all I wish is that those people would be more aware of it.
asd;asa thank you thouugh that's very kind of you to say! I fear I'm not quite as self-confident as you are though, I find my works terrible haha. Still, I never had a 'famous' dA person fav my work and asdask; a-- anyway, back to the topic!
I get what you mean, totally, but I beg to differ! Here, yes, I can see that happen, but if that same shitty emotional drawing was submitted at, say, ConceptArt.org, it'd get no attention whatsoever. So what I'm trying to say I guess, the thing that you're so unhappy about is a local issue, not a global one, different communities differ immensely, and instead of trying to change this particular community, perhaps it'd be better to just go looking for one that has a different ethic? How to best reach people always depends on what kind of people you want to reach, I'm sure you are aware of that yourself, and the ones that are primary users of dA simply aren't those that are likely to read through a 20 page submission! >3<
And, I'm glad I didn't come across as rude. ;v; I personally find the emotional content pretty important though, it's such a big part of the meaning of what's being said, so I was worried my comment might have come out wrong. umu

Well I love role-playing as well...though my kind is not generally the kind you would hear about in polite conversation, if you catch my drift *wink wink*. LOL, that aside, I do understand that just doing the 'facebook' thing and posting something catchy should be allowed and of course it is. However deviant art does attempt to hold itself out as an art website so I feel it should try and follow that sort of theme. Still, the community will never change and that's fine with me, I can play along with no problems, buuut as I always say, since I have the chance to be different, why not! x'D
Also DA is one of the biggest platforms for launching actually. There are other art websites and I've tried tons, but DA is still the best, even if its community may not be 110%. Then again, this piece was never really about the community, mostly just about how I feel art should be. Everyone is welcome to agree or disagree and for the time being the agrees seem to have it :'3
And don't worry, you don't come across as rude. Your speech style is really causing me a heartache though, because it's very cute and it reminds me of a past long lost love .3. Ah, such pain...it's almost delicious x'D
Haha you're quite the fun person to converse with I'd say ^^
