Description One glance was all he needed for it to be obvious the kid was dead.
He hit the stairs running, clearing up to three at a go.  He slammed the door open and lodged the handle in the wall.
"Grab and go.  He knows we're here."
Faye didn't have time to look surprised – Caleb was already shoving her to action.  They were out the door and down the street when she could finally ask, "Where are we GOING?"
"Safe place," said one brother.
"But the truck's gone!"
"Don't need it," said the other.
A buddy down at the mechanic's hauled them and both dogs to a ranch with more than its fair share of windmills.  "Hey Jack!  Need a favor.  Gotta hit up the hunting lodge.  Would you drop the five of us at Lone Canyon?"
The grizzled man on the porch looked up over his pipe.  He eyed Faye a moment and then directed his gaze to the men.
"This legal?"
"Mostly.  On our end, anyhow."
Jack sighed.  "As good a time as any to make sure the engine still works.  When where you thinking?"
"Now's good."
"Course it is.  C'mon."
He led them to a large shed behind the house, which overlooked a long flat field.  Tire marks had ground a neat path some few hundred yards into the grass.  Jack told Finn and Caleb to slide the shed doors open.  When the creaky wood was out of the way, Faye gasped at the bright yellow bi-plane that shone before her.
"Oh.  Heck. No."
"Time to go."
She dug in her heels.  "We can't all fit in there!  I've seen Cessna's bigger than that!"
"We'll manage!"  Finn barked.  "Hup dogs.  Load up, Faye."
She tried to balk more but Jack glared down at her.  "Missy, I've been flying longer than you've been breathing.  Now load up like those boys said and shut your trap."
Mouth closed, she lifted her arms and was hauled aboard.
A sardine tin was spacious by comparison.  It was like stuffing NFL linebackers in a clown car.
The dogs lay in the back and grinned.  The propellers started spinning.  Caleb caught her look and reassured her, "They'll be fine.  They love flying."
Finn nodded.  "Now if we could just get them used to landing."
They started rolling out onto the field.  Faye gulped.  "Shouldn't we have a flight plan or something?"
Jack turned his head to her and hollered over the drone, "We got a plan!"
The brothers joined him: "DON'T CRASH!"
They all burst out laughing.  Faye closed her eyes as tight as she could.
The plane bumped and thumped down the airstrip before miraculously becoming aloft.  The tight quarters and drone of the engine and propellers made it too much hassle to try talking.  The thrumming filled her ears and rambled down her neck and back up to the top of her skull.  Even thinking was a hassle now.
And if she tried to think, her thoughts would turn to that poor kid.  She'd only known him a little but it was more than enough to grieve for his death.  She let the vibrations disintegrate her conscious mind.
Caleb and Finn let her sit in peace.  They had plans of their own to consider.  The noise of the plane didn't even register.
They flew on, over the fields and hiding in the sun.

I kind of based Jack off my grandfather. The whole "We've got a plan: Don't crash!" is EXACTLY the sort of thing he'd say.

And he used to have a small plane which he would land in the horsefield. There's still a long lane of gravel called the airstrip. =]

Oh, this is the least of the stories I could tell about my grandfather. His life is like an adventure novel, only true.

I think. You should write this truthful adventure novel.
