Description
Sorry for not being able to upload a lot lately. I've been working this summer, so I've had little time to hone my artistic skills. That said, I've started this quite a long time ago when Tiffany Ross (Syke) asked for character artwork to be included in her new Akaelae book .So here is the set of lineart that I finished yesterday. Featuring (in the order I drew them) Sheana Tibal , Darius Akaelae , Celina Asara , Kela Akaelae , Vincent Fanilt and Darrik . Everyone but Darrik is a wolf. Darrik himself is a fox.
If you think that the characters may seem to look different seperately then your assessment would be correct. I made the characters at different times and changed the way I do linearts each time I started on a new one. However it was a good practice, never really get the chance to focus on my linearts.
Characters are courtesy of ~shivaesyke
Akaelae, can be read as a webcomic on Syke's website. [link]
And while you're at it, try have a gawk at Alien Dice which is Syke's other popular webcomic featuring a winged bishi.

Really cool image. I like the way you do Sykes characters.
I normaly do my lineart by hand, maybe I should try the digital way. See how that works.

I used to do lineart by hand, until my scanner started to act funny several years ago. Since then I've tried to do it directly in computer. It takes a while to get used to since there is a lot of tedious work involved.

I wonder. When you do lineart directly in computer. Do you just use the mouse or do you have one of does "Oh can't remember the right name" pens that you can hook up to your computer?

I use a wacom tablet with a pen/stylus. [link] If you're considering to purchase one, I suggest you try it out before you buy (since they're expensive). If you're serious with digital art it's a great purchase. There is Trust, a cheaper brand, but they usually lack in something.
I could do it with a mouse, with vector graphics, but that just takes a lot of time for me to do and I find it darn painful to do so. I figure it is a matter of taste since I've seen some artists who use the mouse and are pretty good at it.
If you wanna get better at graphics and art then buying a tablet is not the solution. It is all a matter of skill.

I tryed doing some lineart with the mouse, with vector graphics. It works fine and I get a pretty good result. But your right, it does take a lot of time.
Thanks for the tip on the Tablets. I look in to it.

Yes I did. However a couple of them were made on my Tablet PC.

Not much lineart? Gee, I hadn't noticed.
But seriously, it's good to know that you're trying some new styles. I do that all the time, but only because I can't find one that's just right yet.
Still haven't gotten much done with Photoshop, and now that I have a new computer, it may be a while before I can try it again.
Regardless, it's a good piece, with lots of variation. I can't find any flaws yet, so into my reference file it goes. ;3

Really, really neat lineart. Which tool is utilised in Photoshop to achieve smooth and light inks?

The ordinary hard edged brush and eraser. First draw your line with one or more strokes. And then fix its edges and width with the eraser. Repeat with the next line.
One other trick is that it helps to double the image size when you're drawing your lineart. Because when you're sizing it back down again, the lines become super silky smooth.

Very proper work on this, what ways did you use for creating this clear linework?

Basically it was lots of usage with the ordinary hard edged brush in Photoshop... and lots of erasing in order to have better control of the smoothness and modulation.

Ahh, I know those kinds of work... If you would like to see an even harder way for this but with very good results, why not taking a look into my tutorial? It's as featured dev on my main page - I'd appreciate it ^-^

I've read it before. The problem I have with selecting the lines is that I don't feel it is very intuitive. So yeah, it is easier to just draw the lines yourself and fix the smoothness and modulation afterwards.
I've also read Al Mackey's tutorial with using paths that makes smooth lines. But the flip side is that the lines won't modulate.
I came to a realization that it is much easier to just doodle with the brush and eraser... that and I doodle fast already. Having to select or draw vector paths, are just tools that easily get my attention away from the lineart.

Exactly, it is just no inspiration on it, you do the lines, are bored and just hope you are done asap... The same with my way, that's why I prefer doing the lines on paper - no such a genious clean work like digital, but it looks more unique and inspired.

If I just could do clean lineart on paper as well. I'm not very good at inking.

Thanks. I like Darrik the most, but that's because I finished him last. I was most content with the lineart that I made for that guy.
