Antillean (Caribbean) Manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus, Kapustňák širokonosý), Tirgarten Nürnberg, Germany.

For many years, manatees inhabited incredibly tiny pool in Nuremberg, I think the tank had volume just some 70 000 litres. Still they managed to rise several calves. But in 2011 they moved to brand new tank that allows nice underwater viewing and 10 x bigger space, so manatees can now swim like crazy which they, of course, do NOT do

INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:

Name: Antillean or Caribbean manatee (T. m. manatus)
Location: Caribbean and the northwestern Atlantic Ocean
Size: 2,7 - 3,5 m weight: up to 600 kg
Diet: water plants
Conservation status: endangered.
Interesting facts: although they look fat and lazy, they can be surprisingly playiful and active in the water | they are threatened by boats as they often get very serious injured by propellers | they have envolved in waters that are free of predators such as sharks or killer whales and those big predators only rarely visit habitat of manatees | they are very close relatives of elephants | mother usually gives birth to one calf, which feeds on mother milk |
