i... believe the windows 3.1 i got running had 256 colors already on? i also was emulating it though, i think in dosbox but i can't remember right now.

Mine was emulated too, but in Oracle VM. I used MS-DOS 5.00 as the base for Windows 3.1.

okay, yeah, i just checked and i was running windows 3.1 through dosbox. it's also possible that the installation files or graphics drivers were different, but i was just following instructions in a thread i found

unfortunately i'm not sure how to find the exact thread i used anymore, but there's a lot of different guides on installing 3.1 in dosbox. i'm sorry i cant be more helpful!!
