Shading is my biggest downfall -- you shade beautifully, by the way. Any pointers on how to get better shading into digital art?

Well, as for me it is easier to get. Just take a color darker than the main and draw.
Plus, for the effect, you can use the trick that I have described here. Take blue color and apply multiplication. And simply grind it with water.
