Description ...forgotten how much I enjoyed doing crowd scenes...

I've always loved the atmosphere just before an event... anyone who's stood around in the pits or in the marshaling area for a motorsport event knows what I'm talking about: the buzz of activity as people make last minute preparations on cars, try and calm nerves etc, brilliant. So after re-reading "The Edge of Reason" in EVO I had to do a pit scene.

So here's Team GTV6 (figured the '6 was probably more suited to endurance racing than Alfetta-chan's 4-pot) at the ADAC 24 hour Nurburgring... a massive course that takes in both the GP circuit and the Nordschleife, over 15 miles of track and 220 cars on the grid... so which of our four drivers wants to go barreling into turn one with that mob?

Seeing as I was drawing racing Alfas it was only appropriate that I threw KP in there as well with the famous (infamous?) Alfa-bike.

Been working on it on and off for the last week or so. Yes, I completely screwed the garages... unfortunately when I was drawing them I had left my reference picture at home... bugger, so I had to do them from memory.

Anyways, crit, comment and chocolate always appreciated.

Cheers mate.
Crowd scenes are always fun, 'cause once you're past the first few foreground people everything else requires very little actual effort

See that blimp? Way up there in the sky? I'm in the Hornet about to blow it away.

The perspective and detail involved is bloody awesome. The flags, the overhead blimp, the racing chick with the umbrella... they're the first three things that catch my eye about this. Everything ties together nicely, and the openness of the sky makes things look at the right crowded level. Excellent work.

Thanks mate. I had to bring Tessa (the one with the umbrella) out of the rest of the picture, 'cause at a rather advanced stage of drawing I realized her perspective was slightly different to the rest of the crowd

Yeah, but it gives her more of a presence, I reckon. It all worked out good in the end.

Man, that's a good eye for detail. Must've taken forever.

Thanks. I guess I've been working on it on and off for a week or so now. As for detail, the sketch pad gets left open on the desk, when I wander past I'll spot something that needs adding and just draw it in quickly.

Oho, eternally open sketchpad! Interesting! That's a pretty good way to work, huh... You wouldn't get too attached to the drawing to make changes...

Not so much "get to attached" as "couldn't be bothered doing it again" Sort of a case of: hmm... her perspective's out. Well I could rub her out and start again... or I could draw in "letterbox" lines and bring her out of the picture so it isn't so damn obvious...

...but of course no drawer worth their salt would do that now would they *looks shifty*

I find that leaving the book open is good 'cause I tend to make little changes on the fly, which can be a curse of a blessing as well. All those little changes can mean that I sometimes can miss the big picture so things don't match up. Also explains why I try to leave a night between pencils and inking I guess... it's amazing how something that looked so right at 1am looks so wrong 12 hours later

I hear you about leaving time between pencilling and inking. Makes it a lot easier to step back and look at the whole thing when you haven't spent the last two hours staring at tiny details.

Bugger, dude. You've got major skill when it comes to drawing crowds. Look at the people! Look at their gear! Look at their CARS! Good job, man.

P.S.
Long time no see.

Drawing crowds is actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it. As soon as you've done the first few foreground people the rest sorta just falls into place.

I know... I've been having a bit of trouble keeping up with dA of late
