Description EDIT:Huh... apparently this made it onto EqD. That explains a lot. Thanks to whoever nominated it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

...and so we fled our home, abandoning it to the oncoming storm, and in our great ships we gave ourselves, wandering to the cosmos.

We found a new world in the depths of space; a cold world, far from any star, and to that bit of ice and rock we brought light and life: a rising sun, a setting moon and in our own mastery of the universe we basked; until how we had come to this new home was lost to eternity for all except a very few... and the truth of how it survived became little better than magic...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GIANT STARSHIPS!

...and ponies. Because I could.

Been awhile since I drew either, so it seemed like the thing to do; and maybe get some environment practice to boot. Spaceship very much inspired by the old "Terran Trade Authority" books, which were such a part of my teenage years.

We went through a couple of months where the temp never got below 90 degrees Fahrenheit at night, and about 110 during the day.  And I was renting a house that didn't have A/C.

This looks great. Love your style!

They are great books. Though tracking them down again now as an adult is proving to be time consuming and/or expensive.

Cheers mate.

Nice artwork. It seems a logical endpoint for them is to explore space. Of course considering the stuff they already went through back

in their planet, one has to wonder what lies in their journey throughout the cosmos.

Seriously though, I almost didn't notice the pony in the lower right until you mention it being in EQD.

Come to think of it. If I'm going to make an artwork, I would reference a whole lot of shows

, movies, video games, pop icons/famous figures, breakfast cereals etc just to gain viewers.

Yeah, I wanted this one to be mostly about the starship. The ponies started off when I was sketching as a "I need something in the foreground", but as I worked on it I wound up creating a backstory as to how the ship got there and how it fits into Equestria's history and future etc. There's a few more images in this series I want to do, just got to find the time

Well I would look forward to the series then. Maybe try crossovers if it won't hurt the feel of the series.

BrutalityInc [2013-05-09 15:52:09 +0000 UTC]

"100 years ago, an airship that drifted off-course detected an object, buried beneath Badlands.

An expedition was sent investigate it.

It was discovered to be an ancient starship, hidden beneath the sands.

And deep inside was a marker that would change the history of Equestria forever.

Upon the stone was a map of the galaxy, with its six spiral arms.

And a single word that was older than the time of Nightmare Moon, Discord and even the Three Tribes themselves:

Harmony

Our home.

It was not long before Equestria, and then the world, was united by a common purpose.

In orbit, high above the planet, a great interstellar starship was build, an act that took over a hundred years. It bore down upon the world as a second moon.

Technology and magic joined forces. New sciences that was never even thought of was discovered. Sacrifices were made when it was demanded.

The greatest of these was given to Mana Starlight, descendant of Twilight Sparkle, a bearer of the Element of Harmony. To pilot the colony vessel, she was integrated, permenently, into its systems as its living core. No longer a pony, she is now Fleet Command.

The promise of the Guidestone united the whole world; every species, every kingdom and every mind became focused upon the true origin of their people.

And every effort was focused on building the starship that would seek it out among the stars."

(A parody of the intro of Homeworld, a classic Epic Science-Fiction videogame).

Incredible! ^_^ Hmm..."Terran Trade Authority" books? I'm quite certain I've read one of those before...definitely explains why the ship style looked so familiar to me. Awesome work, sir!

wraith11 In reply to DragonSoulSong [2013-05-07 08:12:17 +0000 UTC]

There were a fair few books done in and around that universe (so I learned from the comments so far... more books than I had realised actually), so it is entirely possible.

That said: the style is fairly typical to that era of sci-fi illustration, and the TTA drew on work from a number of artists of the day: a lot of Asimov etc. novel covers were done in a similar manner.

DragonSoulSong In reply to wraith11 [2013-05-19 22:09:49 +0000 UTC]

Interesting! I didn't know that. On that note...I should really try to track down more of said books, I found the one (I've now checked and confirmed since my last comment) that I have here rather interesting to read and look through...it'd be awesome to read more, though I get the odd feeling that they might be challenging to ferret out these days. XD In any case, excellent piece, imo. ^_^ Well done, with an intriguing environment for the subject, and a fitting backstory to go along with it (which would be /so/ cool to see turned into a novel, on a side-note, unless it somehow already /is/ part of a novel. Owo). That, and the very subtle mlp reference in the piece is a plus, too, there for those that might catch it and enjoy it, but subtle enough not to potentially detract from the piece for those that aren't so hot on the ponies. ^.^

wraith11 In reply to DragonSoulSong [2013-06-01 23:12:57 +0000 UTC]

They are getting a little thin on the ground, and those which can be tracked down (at least on the interbotz) are starting to edge into the "collectible" market as well, so prices are up.

Thanks mate. It's not part of any novel that I know of... though I was considering attempting to write one based on one of the ideas swirling around inside by head: need a bit more practice first though

You're a brony? I like how the ponies are subtle in the pictures though. Makes the emphasis of the picture on the scenery and the spaceship rather than the ponies. Nice work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wraith11 In reply to gartastic [2013-04-29 05:20:22 +0000 UTC]

I'll admit I'm not a great fan of the term "brony", but if by it you mean that I watch and enjoy the show (enough to crank out the occasional bit of fanart), then I guess I am.

Cheers mate. This one was intended to be all about the starship... the major reason ponies got included was because I needed something to pick up the foreground, it seemed like the thing to do. Then of course I started building stories around that in my head...

wraith11 In reply to SilentCarto [2013-04-22 10:56:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm... assuming that's Homeworld related?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilentCarto In reply to wraith11 [2013-04-22 12:14:43 +0000 UTC]

Er, yeah... sorry. Homeworld's plotline kicks off when the inhabitants of a desert planet discover a giant wrecked starship beneath the sands of the equatorial desert, and it soon becomes clear that this is how they came to be on such an inhospitable world in the first place. The game is about their journey back to their homeworld.

In fact, you can watch the opening animatic here . The Khar-Toba looks rather similar to this starship (that is to say, a huge flying boxcar) if you removed the pylons, but like you said in an earlier comment, that's probably because they're both drawing from the same school of thought in starship design.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wraith11 In reply to SilentCarto [2013-04-29 05:17:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I can see where people are drawing the parallel from. I guess that, while this style has been around awhile Homeworld is probably the most recent (or at least the most popular) incarnation. If I was going to pick anything to blame for putting an ancient starship in the middle of a desert it would be the "Unidentified Aliens" section of Spacebase 2000

There's more to this particular story too; hopefully sometime in the near future I'll get around to illustrating more of it.
