Description EDIT:Huh... apparently this made it onto EqD. That explains a lot. Thanks to whoever nominated it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

...and so we fled our home, abandoning it to the oncoming storm, and in our great ships we gave ourselves, wandering to the cosmos.

We found a new world in the depths of space; a cold world, far from any star, and to that bit of ice and rock we brought light and life: a rising sun, a setting moon and in our own mastery of the universe we basked; until how we had come to this new home was lost to eternity for all except a very few... and the truth of how it survived became little better than magic...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GIANT STARSHIPS!

...and ponies. Because I could.

Been awhile since I drew either, so it seemed like the thing to do; and maybe get some environment practice to boot. Spaceship very much inspired by the old "Terran Trade Authority" books, which were such a part of my teenage years.

Isn't this inspired by Homeworld?

wraith11 In reply to thewajor [2013-04-14 00:54:34 +0000 UTC]

No, it wasn't, though I can see where people are drawing the comparrison.

Homeworld's ship designs drew on that 1970's/80's school of ship design and science-fiction illustration. The main driver for this one were the Terran Trade Authority books, which also hail from that same era.

They are brilliant books, but getting increasingly difficult to track down unfortunately.

Seeing this piece, is like seeing a scene out of the Heavy Metal movies and comics. Even a song like "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars" by Blue Oyster Cult, or "Children of the Sun" by Billy Thorpe is perfect inspiration for this piece, as it give off that 70's and early 80's sci-fi feel.
Truly lovely work. =3

Hmm... now I'm just going to sit around and listen to Blue Oyster Cult all day...

I was actually mostly listening to Two Steps from Hell and some of the LotR soundtrack whilst drawing this, but I'm liking how "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" is sounding with it too.

Not certain if there's enough breasts in it though to be absolutely true to the Metal movie/comic genre... definitely not enough for the actual movie "Heavy Metal".

Thanks mate.

Well, for me, there doesn't have to be nudity to be a Heavy Metal story. Just has to have great 70's and 80's sci-fi genre and kick-ass tunes.

Also, I had an idea for a Heavy Metal crossover, featuring "Children of the Sun" as the theme song. But this idea is just for a poster idea I have, using the starship design style of John Berkey. But sadly, I don't have the style to pull off a Berkey-style spaceship scape. T__T;

You realise I have the mental image of Celestia dropping from orbit in an open-top Corvette stuck in my head now right?

This is your fault.

wraith11 In reply to CaptRicoSakara [2013-04-18 09:50:47 +0000 UTC]

Heh, don't worry: the nudity comment was more just a friendly jab at the 1981 movie "Heavy Metal" than anything; where I think the opening sequence was about the only time everyone didn't wind up naked.

The moment at which Twilight Sparkle learnt that everything she thought she knew about Equestria, history and ponykind itself... was wrong.

Yeah, it does have a TTA feel to it, doesn't it?

wraith11 In reply to BenRG [2013-04-13 15:43:24 +0000 UTC]

And didn't Celestia know it

I hope it carries a bit of a TTA feel to it... the derelicts and "objects" in particular. Love that 70's style of starship design: hopelessly impractical, but oh so cool.

Oddly enough, I have a follow up illustration planned for this... but not for at least another month down the track, call it at least June (other deadlines to meet).

Also: how awesome is Last Exile? (though I've yet to find the time to seen Fan the Silver Wing in its entirety ). Actually, I'm a huge fan of Range Murata's work in general: man does brilliant mechanical and character designs (got three of his art books)... I just with I was fast enough to pick up some of his design work in 3D form.

Last Exile was an excellent setting and the designs were neat but the end felt rushed.

Unfortunately rushed-feeling endings often seem to be the norm for anime and manga... sometimes it just feels like somebody ran out of steam.

Glad it came across: I wasn't certain if I'd managed to get enough contrast between foreground and background; or, for that matter, made the ship look like it had been there for the eons I envisaged.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

smokeybacon In reply to wraith11 [2013-04-13 17:02:44 +0000 UTC]

The level of contrast you used does just that I find! It makes the atmosphere look hazy, as if choked up with dust, which has battered against the crashed ship for years.

goodluckfox [2013-04-13 09:16:07 +0000 UTC]

Put me down as another person who looked at that on EQD and said "The Khar-toba from Homeworld!" I also read some of those TTA books back in the day.

wraith11 In reply to goodluckfox [2013-04-13 14:59:10 +0000 UTC]

I love those TTA books, just the design style (and Homeworld to an extent seems to draw on that as well)... miss that 1970's sort of sci-fi illustration: no idea what half the stuff on those ships was supposed to do, but damn if it ever looked cool.

I'm glad the sense of scale is there as I wasn't certain if the three in the bottom right corner appeared high enough to get it; or that there was enough contrast between foreground and background to make everything as epically huge as I wanted.

Though to answer the game's question: the reason spaceships always crash on desert planets is because desert is a whole lot easier to draw than water or forest.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GiromCalica In reply to wraith11 [2013-04-13 07:51:07 +0000 UTC]

Actually it's a bit harder for me, but mountain ranges, forests, and cities are quite easier for me. Only water is kind of the hardest to me, lots of random patters needed to make sure it looks the same as real oceans.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wraith11 In reply to GiromCalica [2013-04-13 14:54:12 +0000 UTC]

Heh, I feel your pain mate: cities and mountains I can do... but the transition between middleground and background (say: plain to mountain) I struggle with. Water's pretty hit-and-miss: sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't
