Description One could say Higgins has been pressed into service here... (actually, come to think of it, does joining Definitely-Not-The-Navy by accident count as impressment? )

I suspect she didn't find that particular joke very funny.

So yeah, Higgins in Arcadia's Action Working Dress, because it's been awhile since I did that.

Sorta like a fellow I once worked with who got his draft notice from the Army during the Viet Nam conflict.Β  He was waiting with seven other guys for their physicals when a Marine Gunnery Sergeant working as a recruiter came up to them and said, "I need seven men for the Marines!Β  And you first seven are it!"

Poor Jerry realized he was the seventh man in the line.Β  The fellow on the other side started laughing.

"What are you laughing about?" asked the Gunny.

"He's number seven!" the man chuckled while pointing to Jerry.

"No, he's not!" stated the Marine as he grabbed the other guy by the front of his shirt.Β  "You are!" and dragged the poor SOB down the hall with the first six following.

Needless to say, Jerry said he moved as far down the line of chairs as he could!Β  Who says there's no justice!Β  And no impressment!

And at that moment he learned an important lesson: there are some situations you never, ever, want to draw attention to yourself.

That's for damn sure!Β  Jerry was in for three years and lived through 'Nam.Β  Was a very good electrician, too!

This is turning into a very punny comments section, I like it.

Just as long as Ms Higgins doesn't get steamed for us pressing the puns.

It is, glad we could all bring a chuckle!!!

She doesn't seem that impressed, though. Must have more pressing matters to attend to. Though, if pressed, she'd admit that part WAS somewhat amusing.

Okay, I'm done.

Always a pleasure seeing Higgins!

Anyone who kept pressing the issue like that may need to go iron things out later with her though...

Didn't mean to get you heated. Don't want this to weigh heavy on you.

Oh, not really heated, I just feel we're becoming inCreasingly hard pressed to come up with fresh, crisp, ironing puns.

Just wash me, I've got some that will tumble you. And (since you're from Down Under), I'm sure you'd appreciate being Hoist by your own petard.

Something between impressment and being shanghaied, I should think.

While you're in an original-fiction state of mind, you ought to work up a nice origin story for this girl ... just whatever brought her to apply for employment on the Arcadia, and how she feels about being there now. Has she met the 'owner,' at least?

TBH, I've been actively avoiding writing anything related to Arcadia and her crew as I can't quite suspend my own disbelief long enough to do so Hence I keep them as something fun to draw.

That said, to fill in the blanks, in my head Higgins' origin is pretty mundane: she got out of school and wanted to go see the world (or, possibly, get away from whatever small, zero prospect, town she's from... I sometimes wonder about how well she goes relating to those friends etc. she left back there). Bear in mind she thought she was joining a superyacht, and was probably quite surprised to be offered the position considering she had no experience or training. I suspect Arcadia doesn't take many, if any, people from the civilian cruising industry. There're different expectations so, if they're going to train someone, they'd prefer to train them from scratch the "Arcadia" way per-se. As to how she feels about it now that she's there... I think it's all very new and a steep learning curve, but I also think she's mostly enjoying it. It's exciting and, well, if those who interviewed her didn't think she was the sort of person likely to flourish in the environment they probably wouldn't have hired her in the first place.

As to meeting the "owner"? By now, quite likely.

I generally try to get washing and ironing squared away on the weekend but yeah... not exactly one of my favourite tasks ever, but also an evil of working life.
