Description Hi guys! This is a new set of 12 artworks I did for the new Star Wars Essential Reader's Companion. Although the dateline for this book was a lot tighter it nevertheless was an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

As with the last book I will be posting them in the order of sequence as it appears in the Reader's Companion. Enjoy!

This scene is found in a short story by Timothy Zahn called Mist Encounter and its one of my favorite fan pieces. Here Captain Voss Parck of the Victory Class Star Destroyer, Strikefast, and Colonel Barris meets Mitth'raw'nuruodo (Thrawn) for the first time. Following this event Thrawn joins the Empire and eventually becomes the Grand Admiral we all know and love, and also founder of the Empire of the Hand.

If you look closer you'll also notice that the clone troopers are wearing hybrid, transitional armor, a combination of phase II and the new stormtrooper armor.

You captured this VERY well.Β

Actually these clones have Phase II armor that was used for the first year of the Empire that was slowly being replaced by mid-18 BBY until 17 BBY, they didn't have any transitional armor.
Since this is set in 19 BBY the clones still have the Phase II armor

I love that Mist Encounter is essentially back in canon, as the first chapter of Thrawn. Β Zahn knew he didn't need to change a thing

The only problem I have with "Mist Encounter" is where the heck did Thrawn learn how to tan and sew leather to make his animal-skin clothing? Β It's not just a matter of stitching together animal skins, it's actually really hard, messy, totally not intuitive if you've never done it before, and NO ONE is THAT crazy-prepared that they just learned on the off-chance someday they might need to. Β I mean, okay, if anyone was that crazy-prepared, it would be Thrawn, but still. Β Did they put a copy of "Living off the Land for Dummies" in the gear dropped with him? Β I call no way. Β  (Well, also, how long was he on that planet anyway if modern advanced technology clothes wore out?) Β

Evolvana In reply to Lisetha [2017-03-17 02:07:15 +0000 UTC]

It's unclear but he spent maybe years on that planet, and I guess that, knowing he would be exiled on some remote primitive planet, he brought with him many holobooks about survival and such, so it's not surprising. Maybe he failed the first times when he tried to tan leather, but after years spent there and several attempts, he ended up being good at it. Maybe he had not many modern clothes with him. Surviving and struggling in an hostile world is part of the punishment.

I would assume in addition to the stuff (and general military basic survival) they threw in some "survival basics 101" type stuff. Β He didn't get to pack, remember-he's a prisoner and gets what they give him. Β But since the Chiss aren't trying to KILL him actively, they probably supplied just enough they considered it a fair chance. Β But just having to resort to it argues he was there a very long time. Ya know, I always thought, realistically, Thrawn should have faced a lot more overt racism from the Imperials then he got. I know he's The Best Ever (no argument there) but ... several high ranking officers were quite open about keeping aliens as slaves. One way Palpatine seems to have maintained his support base was by stoking racial fears. Even one who's The Best Ever should still have had to deal with a lot of species-est bullsh.

Oh well. Still great.

SO happy this character is cannon again...

Not with the Galactic Empire, but before with the Sith Empire and then much later the Fel Empire. In each case they were ACTUAL allies, meaning the Chiss had their own empire, own rules, full autonomy and were not subjugated or forced "allies" like the Galactic Empire did with it's dominions.Β

According to the Hand of Thrawn books, Thrawn formed what was called the Empire of the Hand which was basically an extension of the Imperial Galactic Empire. As a Grand Admiral and Warlord, Thrawn formed the Empire of the Hand with Emperor Palpatine's support. I think the idea was that Thrawn was to form an autonomous empire within the Empire to form a buffer zone between the Empire proper and the rest of the Unknown Region. The Chiss Ascendency was never part of the Empire of the Hand or the Imperial Galactic Empire, but they did quietly give support through money, technology, and Chiss who basically left their home systems to join the Empire of the Hand to fight threats in the Unknown Region, kind of like how Americans joined the Royal Air Force to fight the Germans during World War II or fought for the French during World War I.

Officially the Chiss Ascendency just pretended Thrawn and his the extension of the Imperial Empire didn't exist so they had no diplomatic relations or alliance with him or the Empire. But either because Thrawn is just really charismatic or because militarily advantageous to have the protection of the Empire of the Hand from the many local threats, the Chiss did support them. Basically, it's all just kind of a grey area.

Didn't palpatine and thrawn also do this because they knew about the 'far outsiders'?

PineyCreek In reply to Unkownbrony52 [2016-08-05 23:42:25 +0000 UTC]

My memory gets a little hazy there. I believe the Chiss or at least some of the Chiss knew about the Far Outsiders. Partly it was because what the Far Outsiders were wasn't written yet when the Hand of Thrawn books were finished and Timothy Zahn never really addressed what the threats were at the time. I think Palpatine knew there was danger when he first made contact with Thrawn, but not what the specific threat was. But yes, amongst the many things the Empire of the Hand was responsible for was to prepare a first line of defense against the Far Outsiders, that was their main long term goal while the immediate was to conquer or pacify the Unknown Region through Thrawn's usual combinations of diplomacy, alliances, threats, economic dependence, and military force. This was also why Thrawn lead his grand campaign against the New Republic, to unify the galaxy so they would have a fighting chance against the Far Outsiders. Also because Thrawn desired order above all else.
