I really like the symbolism of this! And when I read it I obviously read it as 'closes' but then when I read it the second time I read "a mind once open never loses" which is also very true.

Kinda gotta disagree with the message-- I meet plenty of people who think they're enlightened and tolerant but end up just being intolerant and hateful in new ways. Great concept artistically though.

Agreed. The way I see it, if you're not hurting yourself and/or someone else, it shouldn't matter what you do or who you are. I do, however, believe some people can lose who they are to darkness ( murderers, pedophiles, ect ), but I believe they can come back from that darkness, and that it isn't common for one to lose themselves to bad things in the first place.
Basically, if someone has different opinions, is a different gender or color or sexual orientation, or is just overall a different person, but they don't hurt anyone, then it shouldn't matter. And even then, depending on the situation, I can have sympathy for those who hurt themselves or hurt others without intention. Honestly, intent to hurt others is my only real problem. If you don't intend to cause harm, then I don't care.

I agree with most of this People are just so obsessed with defining 'normal' and making sure others are excluded from it. Simply accepting the fact that everyone is different and that in the end either everyone is normal or abnormal can make a person so much happier. I know quite a few people obsessed with hating others simply for being different and it seems like such a waste of time and energy. They're free to do whatever they want, I don't make their choices after all, but still there have to be more enjoyable things to do rather than spending your time hating on others :S
Though when it comes to murderers and pedophiles, when terms such as pedophilia and sociopath are involved, sadly they cannot exactly change. A fact most people refuse to accept. Such 'mental afflictions' are non-curable, at least currently. The first is a sexual orientation and sexual orientations are not changeable. As for murderers, well, depending on the reasoning behind it they can certainly change. The various mental illnesses possibly lurking in the background are sadly not capable of changing. We can at most teach either party to control particular urges/behavior through treatment, but even then in the end it's up to them.
So, depending on the background, it's not a matter of 'losing to the darkness/bad things' but rather being dealt a bad hand. You don't exactly choose your orientation, nor do you opt for a mental illness. So even when such a person hurts another 'intentionally' it's rather debatable whether they understand the true concept of hurting others. Makes the legal definition of 'intention' a minefield too ><
I can't even begin to imagine how hard it must be to suffer from what society deems an 'unforgivable affliction'. While I may never understand their actions, I can at the very least show understanding for their situation. Most of my classmates on the other hand would simply refuse to help a client who turns out to be a pedophile for example. So much for 'everyone has the right to legal support/medical treatment' ><
I for one hope that in the future we'll be able to provide help for those that are deemed incurable though

Actually, pedophilia has been proven to be quite seperate from sexual orientation. And it has, in fact, showed signs of being treatable, which is not the case with sexual orientation. Also, pedophilia is proven to be mental, whereas sexual orientation is proven not to be mental.
But I do see your point. That was just something I want to point out.

Hun, I've actually studied criminal psychology/psychopathology and pedophilia is most certainly labelled a sexual orientation. It's been labeled as one for quite some time now whereas the medical world reached a consensus about it being a sexual orientation around 2011 if I'm not mistaken ([link] ). Feel free to read further research (Encyclopedia of Psychology and Law). The reason as to why it's seen as a mental condition at the same time is because it's obviously harmful to the other party. Homosexuality was listed on the DSM for some time as well before finally/thankfully being removed.
The term 'sexual orientation disturbance' was changed around 1980 into paraphilia, which basically means 'psychosexual disorders' or non-normative sexual behavior. Pedophilia is seen as a sexual orientation whereas it shows the same characteristics as either hetero- or homosexuality (Fagan et al. 2002). Namely it emerges prior or during puberty AKA discovering the nature of their sexual attraction and because it is a sexual interest which remains stable over time, often throughout their entire life (Berlin 2000/Flanagan 2004). So no, it's most certainly not been 'proven' to be separate from a sexual orientation, quite the opposite in fact ([link] ).
And yes, any sexual orientation is 'treatable' ([link] ), there is however a clear difference between treatable and curable. It's a matter of teaching an individual to control their impulses to their best abilities, it does not however take the feelings or urges away ([link] ). The same applies to homosexuality and 'treatment' is still often applied by religious communities, even though that's technically illegal in quite a few countries and for good reason. It's about teaching them abstinence and not following up on their 'urges'. The exact same 'tactic' is applied to pedophiles.
As I stated earlier though, the success rate when it comes to treatment is somewhat debatable to begin with. Some data shows recidivism has been reduced while others report the clear opposite. Curing pedophilia would mean changing their sexual orientation, something which is simply not possible.
It's no surprise this isn't exactly common knowledge though whereas it's a topic most people quite simply are uncomfortable about. The above is also somewhat negated by the press (read some of the comments in the first article, while understandable they're also downright horrible), society deems pedophilia as an unforgivable disease and any means of 'justifying' it therefor must be wrong. Problem with that 'logic' however is that it's not being justified at all.
Take note that there's a difference in the variety of pedophiles though, only those exclusively attracted to children are considered to have a sexual orientation, there's also plenty of people who take advantage of children because they're 'easier to manage'. Personally I nearly threw up when I heard a patient say something along those lines that at some point :S

So basically, if I'm pro-gay, not being pro-pedo makes me a hypocrite?
Screw it, this is the same with everything I've ever tried to have an open-mind about. No matter what I do, I'm a freaking hypocrite. Everything I know is a freaking lie, as I am now learning. I clearly can't win.
A mind once open never looses. Yeah, cause it's doomed to an eternal war of right-vs-wrong. Screw it. Everyone can fight their own freaking war. I'm done. I. AM. DONE.

I never called you a hypocrite nor did I ever say that being non 'pro-pedo' makes you one. I suggest you don't jump to conclusions. I never even suggested you should be 'pro-pedo'.
This wasn't about that or even a 'war about right VS wrong' to begin with. You claimed pedophilia is not a sexuality remember? Fact remains that it simply is one. And again, that's hardly anyone's fault for not knowing or simply not wanting to accept that whereas calling pedophilia a sexual orientation is deemed 'giving pedophiles an excuse'. That and people in general dislike hearing that something extremely unwanted is non-curable. Nowadays there needs to be a cure for everything.
How you're even remotely associating any of that with 'being a hypocrite' is beyond me :/
