Description
I can't do better then Disney, but all that discussion about how The Lion King was better 2D animated because in 3D it's expressionless and boring got me thinking of what the remake would look like if instead of hyperrealism, Disney had combined realism and cartoony proportions. The character design of the original TLK is really good, after all.So here's a little prince. I sculpted his entire body as opposed to just his head/upper chest like I do with a lot of my 2D/3D hybrid pieces, but you can't see a lot of it. Mostly used him as an excuse to learn normal mapping and clone painting. A time consuming piece, but fun.

I don't know if you ever saw the one from Edgar Gomez, he did a 3D version too a few years ago:Β The Lion King
And I posted a journal on wondering why people are complaining lol there's no point of doing the exact same design in 3D (although for beauty and the beast I hated it, so it really depends lol )

Yeah, your colors are too strong and too saturated. Or was that intentional? Do you use overlay layers with 70-95% yellowish white?

first off it's kinda jarring to end a one sentence criticism with "thanks for being a good artist" hence my initial reaction. lol
second despite that i do appreciate the critique, no seriously i do pinkie swear, i don't really agree with it. perhaps its a difference in how our screens process color, but i'm genuinely not seeing this alleged excessive darkness or oversaturation. no, i didn't do anything like that during editing.

Okay. I always thank all artist for being artists. I currently work on a regular screen so your image might look off for me. i have to look on my EIZO that is calibrated.
I will analyze you picture then.

that's my theory. the description you gave of using a very lightly colored overlay blending mode, the sorta thing that hella washes out a piece, didn't sound quite right to me given what i'm seeing on my end.
go for it, it'd at least answer the question of is something is or isn't off for one of us.

SvenReinold In reply to Wreckham [2019-04-30 09:38:10 +0000 UTC]
Overlay brightens up. It doesn't wash out. it siulates light. Like a midgray on multiply simulates shadow. It's a very easy way to create realistic lighting. If you want to know if your image is too bright or too dark just look at the histogram. It should optimally be a hill with the peak in the middle if it is a normal outdoor scene.

Wreckham In reply to SvenReinold [2019-04-30 09:48:00 +0000 UTC]
yeah, it brightens up, but in cases where its color is too bright/powerful and is used in a piece with sparse detail that's packed together, it can flood the details out in a swath of color. and an offwhite yellowish color on 95% opacity on a piece like this would majorly wash out those details. i know because i tested it.
something tells me we're going to have to agree to disagree here.

So I have analyzed your image. It has very saturated colors. Pros like Aaron Blaise use less saturated colors becasue they don't hurt our eyes. If colors are too flashy wee need to look away. You took colors that have 70-90% saturation although the use between 0 and 70% is more common. You use bright flashy colors for attentional details and need to be used sparingly. When I look at the histogram I can see that you haven't used any bright colors except red. All colors are in the first 3/4 of it which means that it's a darker image with little light. Your greens are exactly from 0 to 75% brightness. Your red is a bit brighter as stated before from 10% - 100% in which the main distribution is fron 10 to 75%. Blue is from 0 - 90%, but the main peak is from 15 - 20% that is the clear indicator that blue is the darkest color. So the balancing color for that is a bright yellow, like I stated before. The histogram proves me right. The picture is too dark and saturated. When I use auto contrast it shows a huge improvement. That alone would have been enough. Even turning down the saturation of the lights is an pleasant improvement. And you don't lose details, in fact you see even more. You need a more even distribution of the colors. It's always good to adjust your work using adjustment curves. Aaron Blaise does that too. You should check him out. Especially when you are into the Lion King.

I use a 95% yellowish white with a brush that has pressure-sensitivity so it doesn't add too much at once. I start with the 70% and paint in the lighter areas very subtile. And where the sun hits directly i go there with 95%. Don't use it full power. Just veeery slightly. I make the highlights on a separate layer.

This is really nicely done! The detail is really impressive
I personally don't think the realism is the problem with the remake when it comes to expressions; real big cats can be really facially expressive , and you'd think they'd be able to make realistic lion models emote decently like Aslan in Chronicles of Narnia's movie (and make it look even better with today's technology!) But there's an unfortunate thing with Disney's TLK remake where realism is focused on so much that emotion and expressions become an afterthought or not considered at all, which I think is really disappointing ;; I think it's fixable on their part too and maybe they'll fix the expressionlessness by the time the movie comes out! At least I hope so. X'D

Wreckham In reply to Flora-Tea [2019-04-30 04:17:59 +0000 UTC]
thank you!
ah yes, the debate about the expressions rages on haha. frankly i'm not too worried - i see it as either we the audience not yet seeing enough footage to determine the emotional range, or that it won't be nearly as distracting as everyone says when the movie is released. frankly i don't mind it being the way it is. i don't expect an emulation of the original, heavily stylized film and i'm so gobsmacked by the current cg technology disney has that i'm too busy being impressed to mind the stylistic shift right now.
you are right, though, it's not a fault of hyperrealism, though i have to wonder: would it be as hyperrealistic if the animals emoted the same way humans do? would it be uncanny or charming? can we expect the jungle book level emoting in the theatrical release or something different/better/worse? guess we'll have to wait and see.

Wreckham In reply to Flora-Tea [2019-04-30 07:30:23 +0000 UTC]
i think so too. there were a handful of times a noticeable human expression could be seen in the trailers - timon smiling while singing being one - and i liked it. hoping to see more of that in the film itself.
with all the effort put into studying the animals' movement and anatomy, i'd be surprised if we were to find they didn't emote with body language. i trust the animators to deliver on that, at least.

Definitely!Β And I thought those remakes they did were too dull and boring, and the acting and singing were kinda weak.Β Even when the original movies were praised by critics and audiences alike, and even broke records, I wouldn't see these remakes as "superior" to the original.Β Heck, even the original The Lion King is still the highest grossing animated film of its kind.

Wreckham In reply to NixWerld [2019-04-30 07:28:02 +0000 UTC]
yeah all the remakes up til now have been pretty lame, graphics aside. if it ain't broke, don't fix it. i can only hope they leave some integrity to the lion king given how beloved it is.

NixWerld In reply to Wreckham [2019-04-30 07:36:14 +0000 UTC]
Absolutely.Β And the singing of Emma Watson as Belle sounds Autotuned, like it belongs in some bubblegum techno-dance song from the early 2000s, or could be sampled to make a virtual singer.Β Who knows how far technology has come nowadays?Β The Disney remakes of 90s Disney movies is one of the reasons why I feel like I'm living 18 years too far into the future.
