Description I can't do better then Disney, but all that discussion about how The Lion King was better 2D animated because in 3D it's expressionless and boring got me thinking of what the remake would look like if instead of hyperrealism, Disney had combined realism and cartoony proportions. The character design of the original TLK is really good, after all.

So here's a little prince. I sculpted his entire body as opposed to just his head/upper chest like I do with a lot of my 2D/3D hybrid pieces, but you can't see a lot of it. Mostly used him as an excuse to learn normal mapping and clone painting. A time consuming piece, but fun.

EDIT: Well this blew up! Thanks a ton, everybody.

ARCHIVE EDIT 5/3/2024: i have no idea why this blew up back in the day. deviantArt even put it on their twitter. what the fuck was going on

So I have analyzed your image. It has very saturated colors. Pros like Aaron Blaise use less saturated colors becasue they don't hurt our eyes. If colors are too flashy wee need to look away. You took colors that have 70-90% saturation although the use between 0 and 70% is more common. You use bright flashy colors for attentional details and need to be used sparingly. When I look at the histogram I can see that you haven't used any bright colors except red. All colors are in the first 3/4 of it which means that it's a darker image with little light. Your greens are exactly from 0 to 75% brightness. Your red is a bit brighter as stated before from 10% - 100% in which the main distribution is fron 10 to 75%. Blue is from 0 - 90%, but the main peak is from 15 - 20% that is the clear indicator that blue is the darkest color. So the balancing color for that is a bright yellow, like I stated before. The histogram proves me right. The picture is too dark and saturated. When I use auto contrast it shows a huge improvement. That alone would have been enough. Even turning down the saturation of the lights is an pleasant improvement. And you don't lose details, in fact you see even more. You need a more even distribution of the colors. It's always good to adjust your work using adjustment curves. Aaron Blaise does that too. You should check him out. Especially when you are into the Lion King.

I would prefer if the movie they were going for looked more like this. The thing that makes Simba, Mufasa, and Scar so memorable is the fact that they can express. They can smile and scowl and look confused and sing without breaking some barrier of realism and making things uncanny. They can really make Scar look villainous and Simba look heroic. Not to mention that Rafiki looks absolutely terrifying when realistic.

much as i like the realism of the remake, i have to agree. the hyperrealism is something different from the original, but it will have to rely on different strengths to get across the same emotional depth or else risk looking either unrealistic or creepy.

If they're going to remake TLK in CGI, you'd think they'd do it more like this!

Wreckham In reply to AgileRhino [2019-05-01 01:16:17 +0000 UTC]

i can understand their decision, and frankly i like it, but i do think it'd be cool for them to try something besides hyperrealism with their tech. such kind words though, tyvm!

i can see that being the explanation for it. it was one of the theories i had for the decision to tone things down. that and how hyperrealism doesn't call for the same kind of animation as the original. i think it'll be interesting to see!

the cartoon characters are a bit of a different issue, though. not only did they "exist" alongside real people in the real world, giving us a point of reference that wasn't kind to them and made it harder to suspend our disbelief as an audience, but their major fault was, imo, neither leaning towards the realistic or cartoony enough. they're in a sort of ugliness sweet spot where they're too realistic to look like themselves as cartoons and too cartoony to be believable as realistic. if the entire world of, say, the scooby doo movie had been animated like scoob had been, it might've been ugly (hypothetically lol idk how it would really look), but scoob wouldn't have stood out as jarringly as he did.

Remaking The Lion King is pointless anyway. Sequel, prequel or spin off in this style is another matter.

Btw, I made an eulogy for The Lion King, if interested
Eulogy for The Lion King (RIP 1994-2018/19)I sent this in forums before, but just in case:
First Jungle Book, then Pete's Dragon, then Beauty & the Beast, then Dumbo, and now the most priceless and irreplaceable of all: The Lion King! All victims of Disney's pointless, shameful and unhealthy obsession of making the beloved, animated Disney-movies all over with mother fucking live-action! Will it ever stop?!
But let's get to the point. The Lion King is the first feature length film I've ever watched from start to finish. Not sure was it the first I've heard of. I was 4-5 when I watched it. Repeatedly from VHS like other VHS tapes we had. Never seen the movie in big screen. At the time I had no idea how feature length films differ from everything else. Everything were just TV-programs, video tapes or commercials. It took me multiple movies to learn the exact definition.
At the time I also wasn't capable to experience the same as the charact

Wreckham In reply to GWKTM [2019-05-01 01:21:29 +0000 UTC]

oh, but that's the thing. it's not pointless, it's a very intentional and powerful plan to make disney a lotta $$$. and given that's how disney just is, i'm not getting the hullabaloo about it.

i can see where you're coming from given the lion king was my fave as a kid too, but it seems a little melodramatic to say this remake is killing it, doesn't it? we'll always be able to enjoy the original, after all

This is pretty cute! I'd like to see Zazu in this style. xD
