Hey guys! Happy New Year, and starting 2022 strong with this coloring book entry! Holy Stars! It’s been like, a long time, since I joined a Disney coloring book contest by . Think I joined back in 2014 and for some reason, didn’t join anymore. Wanted to see how far I managed to come over the years so decided to join this again!

Initially, I wanted to recolor the same picture I did all those years ago, but then I saw this pose of Ralph , I thought if his expression isn’t that sad and if he wasn’t sitting on a dump site, he’d actually be pretty cool. That’s when I started thinking what other places I could place him on where he would look rad, and I thought: what if I placed him on top of a car? That thought made me recall a scene from a music video, in which one of the singers entered the scenery on the top of a moving car.

Of course, when you have Ralph, you gotta have Vanellope too, right? As soon as I established Ralph is sitting on top of a car, I went and tried finding a picture in which Vanellope is sitting because, seriously, standing on a car is really dangerous, don’t do it. Since the Ralph picture was taken from Wreck-it Ralph and there is a slight art shift between the arts of both movies, it would be best if I could find Vanellope’s picture from the Wreck-it Ralph ones. However, none of the pictures seemed to be the best so I turned to Ralph Breaks the Internet, where in page 14 of Ralph Breaks the Internet: The Ultimate Coloring Book published by Autumn Publishing, I found this neat picture of Vanellope which has the perfect pose. So, I took those two pictures and started working on this entry. Changed their expressions to make them more menacing though haha. XD

As you can see here, Ralph and Vanellope are wearing clothes that are…not quite what they usually wear in the movies, and there’s a reason for that. These outfits are inspired from Bōsōzoku , a Japanese culture similar to biker culture in Western countries but with cool outfits derived from black or white boilersuits with Kanji. Kinda fits since Vanellope is originally a character from a Japanese-style racing game, and in the sequel they visited Slaughter Race where they encountered folks who leaned into this kind of biker culture, so I thought it might be fun if they wore clothes that matched that game as well!

Now, I’m not Japanese, but recently my city had taken this culture and reinspired it slightly in some media; here we call it 暴走族 , and there are two pieces of media that had included this culture: one is ERROR Selfish Project (ERROR 自肥企画 ) , another is a song called 虎道門 by Lokman Yeung and Anson Kong of the local boy band MIRROR. The MV of 虎道門 is the main inspiration for this piece, the three words itself is a Cantonese theater slang indicating the doors leading to the stage, and the song itself expresses the thrill and passion the stars have on the stage as they leave their real everyday selves behind; what’s interesting is that to express said passion, they used Bōsōzoku culture to heighten the wildness of the situation. As a nod to this song, you’ll see that one of the billboards in the back has said song title on it (虎 itself means tiger, hence the tiger stripes), and the title of this entry itself is derived from the song. Yes, the song is Cantopop and mainly consists of Cantonese, but we like to pepper some English into our lyrics so this is one of the sentences that they have in the song. For the Bōsōzoku outfits, the Kanji used is symbolic, but since the two media gave it a twist by using words inspired by the people wearing them, I think I would like to give that a go as well! For Ralph, the words are 天下無敵 and 破壞之王 , the former meaning ‘invincible under the sky/in the world’, and the latter ‘king of destruction’; this is also a nod to the Cantonese title of Wreck-it Ralph, which is 無敵破壞王. For Vanellope, the words on the sleeve bands can be combined to form the word 跳格 , a Cantonese slang used to mean an error, and the word used to refer to Vanellope in the Cantonese dubbing. Since Vanellope is technically a minor, I don’t dare on giving her any tattoos, but I did give her a few colored streaks and some piercings. I went ham with Ralph though haha, had a lot of fun with those tattoos!

For me, the most challenging part is to draw the car that they were sitting on. I wanted a car that had a top and a hood large enough to (barely) fit another person, and immediately I thought of a jeep, though I did tweak its design to match that of Vanellope’s kart. Also went with a city billboard vibe since once upon a time we’re famous for our neon billboards (we still are, but most of them are LED instead of using neon lights). Had a reference to the arcade since the sign on the left reads 樓上機舖 , where it means ‘upstairs arcade’.

Phew! This has been a REALLY long summary, don’t know if you’ve read through the whole thing haha, but I had A LOT of fun drawing and coloring this in! This bad boy took me at least 80 layers and 15 hours to complete, but I had so much fun working on it! I really hope you’ll like it as much as I did working on it!
