Description
It's Rachel from Advance Wars DS! That's right, actual Advance Wars fanart, which as far as I can tell is pretty rare. I don't know why, it's a popular enough series... Anyway, hopefully this Rachel picture will help fill the fanart void. For those who aren't familiar with the series, the missiles in the background are her Super CO Power, in which she calls in three missles from headquarters to deal some damage. Rachel normally seems like an easy-going girl, but when my friend suggested doing that crazy eye-glint assassin thing, it seemed like too good an idea to pass up, even if it didn't seem entirely in character.
Overall, Rachel wasn't much trouble to draw or color, but those missile exhaust clouds were a huge pain. Also, I initially had trouble deciding on a sky color, but when I realized that the picture had lots of white and red, adding blue was the clear choice, since Orange Star is basically the US of Wars World. Now people can't say I've never done a patriotic picture.

Thanks for the link, seeing people use my art like that makes my day. And I'm glad you like my take on Rachel as well as the rest of my gallery too.
Good point about the EU being full of real-life Comm Towers, too. If you can point out Javier's exact country of origin, I know where I'm going if Black Hole ever attacks for real.

Haha! I thought he had something to do with Spain. If you pronounce his name in a certain way, it sounds Spanish-ish.
Don't really know if there are many Comm. Towers there.

Personally, I got an eastern Europe vibe from Javier, but you'd probably know better than I. I'm an ignorant Orange Star citizen, and all we know is Orange Star.
(I'm joking, of course.)

Teehee!
^ Who would've thought that would work. XD
Well, it's only fan speculation of course, but the majority of people think Javier is Spanish, but I've seen other possibilities too, so yeah.

Really, a lot of people think he's Spanish? It's been a while, but I thought he referred to sausages or some sort of cured meat product from back home, and I don't think that's much of a Spanish thing. Plus, the mustache and coat didn't look Spanish to me. On the other hand, that is totally conquistador style armor. He's quite the complex figure...
Also, that Lash icon is cool, are there more? like maybe... Hawke? And how'd you find out about that anyway?

My mind tells me that him holding a sniper and stuff xD

WridianGrey In reply to Red-Kun [2008-09-16 02:54:24 +0000 UTC]
His CO Power would definitely be harder to depict than Rachel's three missiles. My first guess is him with a sniper rifle in the foreground, with a ton of ranged units in the background firing off the ordinance. And in place of the sky is a faint map grid plotting out rocket trajectories and stuff. However, that might be way too busy. Shooting further is a much more abstract concept than three missiles.

Nicely done. I've only gotten into Advance Wars a little while back, but I enjoy it a lot. Especially the recent Days of Ruin. I wanted to look for some more Days of Ruin fanart, but that just isn't really happening yet. Maybe you could do a fanart piece sometime of someone from Days of Ruin?
Anyways, keep up the good work! Hope you don't mind if I keep a watch on your art. Til' then~!

The odds of me doing Days of Ruin fanart are pretty low right now. First, there's the matter of being busy, and second, the fact that I don't... really like any of the characters in that game. I love the new/tweaked units, but I'm not big on the new CO Zone thing and VERY ANGRY about the change in art style. I really liked how it used to look, and enjoyed the light-hearted tone overall. The gameplay remains solid, but that's about all I like in the latest entry. I won't try to deny that I'm a bitter fan that liked things just how they were, dag nabbit! Though of course, I do like the unit changes.

Don't worry, in those training missions, everybody's shooting blanks. Blank bullets, blank tank shells, blank inter-continental ballistic missiles...
Or maybe the writers just didn't think the concept through at all with that stuff, that's another option. The Advance Wars series was never known for its serious internal logic, after all. Unless there's a good explanation for how Andy can personally repair every single unit on the battlefield instantly, for example. Or how Black Hole can make pipes so huge not even jets and bombers can fly over them, or how two damaged battleships can combine into one battleship, so many other crazy things.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
veryfatboy In reply to WridianGrey [2016-11-02 15:55:52 +0000 UTC]
The probebly best explanation would be, that they see it like we do, on a tactical map, whit a few figures to represent troops.
He sends Repairtroops, the pipes are actually well defended by automatical turrets, and the battleships sink the less damaged and trow their guys together.
Better question: Why can our Infanterie selfdestruct on command?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
WridianGrey In reply to veryfatboy [2018-05-27 08:58:41 +0000 UTC]
Even if Andy sends "repairtroops," how do they instantly get to every single point on the map, when everything else has to come out of specific productions sites and might very well have take a couple turns to get as far away as it did? And then why do they instantly disappear afterwards? And if it's just specially trained units doing the repairs, why can only Andy send them but no other Orange Star COs?
And I'm not really buying the idea of invisible ultra deadly pipe turrets that must only shoot straight up or that the only damage battleships sustain is to the crew either...
Infantry self-destructing isn't so impossible though, if by "self destructing" they simply disband. The explosion is just them setting off their ammo to celebrate their tour of duty being over.

Ha ha, nice. Rachel's CO power is pretty awsome, too bad you don't get to control her missles though. I'm more of a Grit guy myself though. Who needs long range missles when Grit's CO power lets his battleships and rockets reach just about anything on the map?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
WridianGrey In reply to Gee-Man [2008-01-17 08:06:31 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I've always been frustrated by those auto-aim abilities like Rachel's missiles, Sturm's meteor, etc. Rarely do they go right where you really need them.
As for Grit, he is by no means a bad CO, but the whole move OR attack artillery limit has never left me a huge fan of those type of units. I like COs who specialize in getting in the other guy's face and CRUSHING them.

Gee-Man In reply to WridianGrey [2008-01-17 08:20:54 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I totally understand where you're coming from, but I guess there comes a certain satisfaction of completely obliterating your opponent who thought they were safely out of range of your rockets. Of course, when I need to go for a fast crushing victory, I'll use other CO's like Jess, Grim (I personally never noticed a huge decrease in defense), or Hawke.

I used to be all about Eagle back when he was the only guy around who could get two turns in a row. Tag SCOPs changed that, of course. I love double-turns, due to not having to worry so much about getting your butt handed to you on the opponent's next turn. Two well-used turns can leave them with little counter-attack options within the next turn or two.

Gee-Man In reply to WridianGrey [2008-01-18 04:39:01 +0000 UTC]
Yep, but hey, Eagle in a Tag means you get THREE turns.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
WridianGrey In reply to Gee-Man [2008-01-19 06:16:47 +0000 UTC]
Quite true. But somehow, three turns didn't seem as huge an advantage compared to two as two compared to one, you know?
And Eagle's an air specialist, which is great on an air-heavy map, but generally speaking, I'm not huge on extreme specialists in any game, I like to keep my options open, like with your Hawke types who's specialties apply to everything equally. So in AW DS, I only use Eagle on air battle heavy maps, whereas before, I'd use him on any map that wasn't naval battle heavy because double turns were just that awesome. Also, AW DS has overpowered Collin to compete with.

Gee-Man In reply to WridianGrey [2008-01-19 06:46:07 +0000 UTC]
Colin was overpowered? Well, I guess I never liked him in AW 2 so I never really mastered his abilities that well in DS either. I never liked the idea of weaker units, even if they were cheaper.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
WridianGrey In reply to Gee-Man [2008-01-20 05:27:30 +0000 UTC]
I didn't like him at first either, but the savings more than makes up for the weakness in terms of superior numbers. Plus, his units have exactly as much ammo, fuel, and are equally good at taking up space, which is important on those tough maps.
Though less so in AW DS since they fixed the AI bottleneck exploit.

Gee-Man In reply to WridianGrey [2008-01-20 05:49:01 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, you have a point there, but there's always been something unappealing about him to me, I usually don't do as well against other people using him for some reason. Oh well, probably just because my gameplay style clashes with Colin's. Sort of like your disposition towards Grit.

Sorry, I meant "mad man" in the gender-neutral sense. I guess I should have omitted the space between the two words then?
In any case, Jess is indeed way cooler, and one of my favorite COs to use. (I love the hard-hitters.) I just wish she'd grow her hair out, it's way too short. If I ever did fanart of her, I'd be split between my belief in staying on-model and my strong dislike for reall short haircuts on the ladies.
