Description
Those who have been following my updates should recognize this little guy from a previously posted sketch. I've actually had him modeled and textured for quite a while now, I just never bothered to put up a nice turnaround. I was thinking that looking at my gallery you'd have no idea I was still doing 3d CG work, so I decided to fix that. He's not quite perfect, specifically, his claws are kinda weird. In earlier sketches I was going for a kinda funky mostly nail-covered finger thing that I eventually decided was dumb and not of consistent realism. However, I made him before coming to that conclusion, so I'll have to fix that eventually. Despite going in a more conventional direction with the finger claws though, I'm leaving the toes practically solid claws, as totally unrealistic as that may be. Why? Because I think it looks cool, and people don't pay close attention to feet anyway.

Thanks, that means a lot coming from someone as talented and accomplished as yourself! Really, you made my day, I feel like I climbed the ladder a little.
As long as I have your ear though, I'd like to ask a question if you don't mind. Obviously, this guy's current face isn't really modeled for any animation, (for reasons I won't bore you with,) but eventually he and his fellow mole-ish things who are just currently model sheets should be able to talk and emote and all that. Now, I'm not entirely ignorant of rigging facial animation, but the prospect of rigging a muzzled (as in non-human) face does seem like a particular challenge, and something I haven't done before. Just getting them to open and close their mouths would be super easy, but I'd really like to make them talk, you know? Smile, mouth the "ooh" sound, that sort of thing. Not just lazy lifeless jaw-flapping. But it seems to me that's gotta be a tougher challenge then a well animated human face, and about 99.9% of faces you see in tutorials and such are human. So, do you offhand know of any good places to specifically learn about making well animated muzzled animal faces in 3D? Not that brushing up on faces in general isn't useful too, but it's the level of deformation a muzzle needs that particularly seems daunting and hard to find info on.

Personally i never got my hands on rigging.
But i'll ask around my 3d friends - maybe someone will gave me usefull information.

Wow, very impressive! Is this made for something specific ("official") or just a personal project?

Thank you! It's not something "official," though it was paid work. "Indie" would be a more appropriate description since this project which is still creeping along consists of myself and a programmer.

Oh, ok. Looks like the design is pretty sweet.

It's not so bad once you've had at least a few months of practice. Still, some parts, especially the texture, take a long time even with plenty of practice.

Wow, awesome job. It's really cool to see your sketches "come to life", so to speak. The textures are really something amazing too.

Thanks. The texture itself represents about 75% of the time it took, so I'm glad it's time well spent. Plus, at a 1,500 poly limit, it's up to the texture to define all the small details.

I only ever textured one thing in a group project in high school and it was a talking pie. Even so, I remember how awful it was trying to make it match up, even for such a simple thing! It took several class sessions. I don't remember our poly limit, but I imagine it was about the same, maybe less.

Making parts line up on the model that don't line up on the texture is indeed a HUGE PAIN. You can minimize it with carefully planned modeling and unwrapping, but some parts will end up like that regardless. I hear there's new software that lets you paint on the model itself, though... I should look into that more once I have some software buying money.

Wow, great texturing work! Looks like it came out of a fantasy game.

It did, sorta... In that it came out of what will eventually be a fantasy game if all goes as planned. Still a lot of work to do before it's playable, though.

An entire game requires a lot of work and dedication. But looks like you've got what it takes to pull it off, even if at a slow and steady pace.
Sorta like an RPG, where you can select your favourite from a variety of character races?

It's slow going being the only artist and doing other art jobs to keep enough money coming in to pay the bills. In my defense, I always have more stuff done than I've actually yet shared, though.
As for the big picture, it's actually intended to be an MMO. Because, you know, there aren't enough of those out there already. Especially fantasy-themed ones. Anyway, it'd take FOREVER to do the whole game myself, so we're working on a demo, basically. Then hopefully the demo is impressive enough to take it to the next step.

Hmm, fascinating. Well, if the game is ever completed, let us just hope it will be your usual quality.

Don't sound too confident there!
No, but seriously, I too prefer to stay in the cautiously optimistic category with most things too. And this is definitely a huge endeavor. And yes, I definitely intend to do my best, as making it look nice is probably the best chance at standing out of the crowd. Not that I'm ignoring gameplay, but that doesn't really come through in screenshots too easily. At the very least, it needs to look better than those many mediocre Korean MMOs.

Heh, so true. And if you throw in some unique gameplay mechanics, the game is bound to be a hit.

Mostly, I'm just the artist, gameplay and such is primarily up to the programmer/director/producer guy. Doing the visuals is already more than enough work for me alone, and I am not very good at programming anyway.
