Description Lance Cpl. Christopher Heatherington, combat engineer with Combat Logistics Battalion 31, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and a native of Fairbury, Ill., attempts to cheat off a neighboring fourth-grader during a multiplication test here, Oct. 10. Taking a break from their engineering civil affair project at the elementary school, the Marines interacted with the students in class. The ENCAP is one of multiple humanitarian civil affairs projects conducted by the 31st MEU throughout the island of Palawan during the Amphibious Landing Exercise in the Philippines. PHIBLEX, now in its 29th iteration, is an annually-scheduled exercise between the U.S. and Philippine forces, aimed at strengthening military-to-military interoperability and bilateral relationships.

Some of my friends and family members joined the military. It didn't really matter what branch they joined (mostly Marine/Army), they all said it was a horrible decision. It's an extremely shady business filled with extremely shady people who force you to do extremely shady things.

Ight, you have no idea what you're talking about. And just because many of us come out hating it and glad to get out, myself included; doesn't mean regret the decision to serve in the first place.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pwney In reply to CavScout8 [2017-07-25 02:43:19 +0000 UTC]

Ok, but just because you don't regret the decision doesn't mean others don't? I never stated that I was speaking on behalf of everyone who serves/served. I'm speaking for my friends and family. My cousin's hearing got messed up, will need a kidney transplant within 20 years, and contracted asthma. Not to mention how he hated it. As for my friends, they just generally hate it. Horrible decision, yes, but I never said they regretted it either (although they probably did during service at some points). As for regretting the decision afterwards.. why the fuck would anyone regret the benefits that come after serving lmao. The only time I can think someone would is if they got fucked up somehow or don't agree with how the military does its business. I bet my cousin doesn't even regret it since he gets a decent check every month now for the rest of his life.

When I said you have 'no idea what you're talking about,' that was pointed at your deduction of 'a shady business, shady people, extremely shady things.'
It's no more shady than the private sector. The horror stories will be the same everywhere you go.

Regretting the decision afterwards, while getting benefits? Yes, some do. Lost wives, lost everything, so many demons that they can't live normal, lost limbs, crap health, things the army tries very hard to NOT pay for like backs and knees, etc. As far as the benefits, they're part of the package for the worst rated job in the country. Tell me what kind of hourly wage it would take for most to do that job, unescapably, for a 6 year binding contract. That's whether we fight little boy screwing muslims and lose 10,000 soldiers, or fighting the Chinese losing 500,000. We don't have enough people willing to merely 'serve their country' in a digital world where it's sooo much easier to see that we don't have a population worthy of such self sacrifice.

So you can 'serve' in the mil, or not and just sit home popping out babies for the gov to pay for in every way; receiving the same benefits. Ya, that's a pretty sweet deal... ha. The mil benefits mostly only help those who are looking to progress in life after they leave the military.

I deleted most of this message. Didn't think you'd read it at what it was getting to.

Lmao I never said it wasn't any less shady from the private market. I was referring to how gullible civilians think that they're going to make the world a better place by joining the military. It's not about serving and protecting like it was half a century ago. It's a business now. We topple governments and fuck up other countries instead. We create more terrorists than we kill and call it honorable. We kill civilians and try to cover it up. It's not too hard to notice how oblivious most people are to what really goes on in the world, so I'd call the military pretty shady in regards to what people probably expect.

Your second paragraph pretty much backed up my original statement of how people regret joining the military which doesn't make sense to me since I thought the whole premise to your argument was the opposite. Although it is interesting isn't it? Even with how bad the job is, I don't even know if I'd regret joining simply because you'll never get to experience anything like it. I'd imagine a lot of people feel the same.

I took a closer look at how the benefits work since I honestly wasn't up to speed. They're pretty shit, so yea you're right.

I always read the message unless it's from someone who's clearly a moron.

That's some bullshit. They asked for volunteers in my unit to go help at a school back in 2012, y'know what we did?

We spent the whole day making a stupid little yard with a tree and a little brick wall, with the teachers occasionally barking at us, and the kids occasionally passing and waving.

Cool image, though.

When will the philippinese have military exercises on us coasts, I wonder. I'll happily watch some dailydeviations where philippinese soldiers give chocolate to indigenous british/us school children with naive smiles.
Military occupation has become a must have, these days, an occasion to make funny photos. Japanese used to do quite the same there, except a little more brutally. But it's still occupation.
I'm just saying that non-liberal and non-neocon  blasphemy because the us have just invaded my country too, for good, under the guise of militaru presence at the Black Sea, and the need for peace preservation - by means of occupation. Well, the russian neighbordoes the same, as does the chinese, etc.
I hope it's in every occupied contry's interests.
