Suppose Team Avatar stopped off in a town where the Fire Nation had a mining operation running and the mining inadvertently unleashed the Flying Polyps from their imprisonment? Who could blame them for reacting thusly?
Aang in particular would find the Flying Polyps deeply disturbing for more than the obvious reasons. The Polyps are brutal, warlike and genocidal. They also have the power to control the wind. In other words they're Air Benders. To Aang they would seem like a gross perversion of everything his people believed in.
