I love everyone leaves these up when the shelters have been bricked up or turned into storage rooms. A lot of these had airtight hatches so it could have been behind something. This is a throwback to when Cleveland and Pittsburgh were considered major targets due to the factories.

It is an interesting thing to leave behind!
Oh wow, I didn't think of that, I always wondered why there were so many in the Cleveland area, thanks for the little history tidbit! I knew about the factories but just didn't make the connection. Interesting

Sorry I'm a bit of a Cold War history and post apocalypse nerd lol. There used to be a ton here too due to Youngstown and the steel mills in Sharon/New Castle. On a side not those shelter plates go for big bucks online these days if you ever see business owners wanting to toss them.

oh don't be sorry, I always love to hear history!
I'm sure they do, everyone is always so fascinated by them. They are such a strong mark of history, when you see them, for my generation, it is hard to look at that and understand how truly the public feared targeted attacks and such in the cold war. It is something my age has not experienced so seeing the actual plate really drives the reality home.

it was just an old room turned into a boiler room- we assume that the actual "shelter" was the bathroom cuz it was all stone walls.
but the other building we went into (Garfield's tower) had a large vault/crypt deep underneath and President Garfield and his wife's caskets were down there. Sadly I didn't have my camera on that trip but I hope to return and take pictures!
