How, you ask? Well, ponder this.Say a person went around life with a severe hatred of the color orange. And not as in "oh this orange shirt does nothing for my complexion" hate, but hate as in a sincere belief that anything bearing this color is pure evil, sinful, and must be eradicated. The belief that orange is the cause for all that is wrong with the world. Even going so far as to brutally attacking/killing people for merely wearing the color orange.
You'd think that person was a prime candidate for the nuthouse, right?
Now go over that scenario again, but replace 'the color orange' with 'homosexuality'.

True, homophobia is the fear of homosexuals and not a hatred for them. However, most homophobes express a HATRED for homosexuals (there you go everyone arguing about that).
And even though comparing it to the color orange is a little farfetched, I still understand what you mean. You can really compare it to anything and it'll still make sense. So yay for you~!

Make good points, and make them well. Crappy logic does nothing for the cause of promoting tolerance. It just gives homophobes fuel to throw back at you. I'd prefer idiots don't defend a cause because they can be shot down so easily, it makes the whole cause look bad.

Okay let's sit back and actually look at the word Homophobia for a second. First off, it's meant to define a fear of homosexuals, not a hate of them. Secondly something is only ever allowed to be classified as a phobia when it is a fear that is both completely irrational and is powerful enough to affect your life despite an attempt to stifle or control it's impact on you. Thus unless someone is terrified of homosexuals to the point where they'd have to leave the room when one enters or else feel a ton of anxiety they aren't a homophobe.
So yeah, actual homophobia is a mental disease. What you're describing is just irrational hate. Hating homosexuals isn't a mental disease, it's just basic ignorance, prejudice and stupidity as much as racism or sexism.

First off, almost all phobias could be classified as subgroups of xenophobia given that most have to do with something strange, foreign or unusual so I don't really see your point. Secondly, while the English language is constantly changing such that "homophobia" might be used to describe hatred of homosexuals it is only understood as a clinically accepted mental illness when it is an irrational fear instead of an hatred that is rationalized through stupidity and misinformation. My comment is only refuting the accusation that hatred-based "homophobia" is a mental illness.

Well seeing as how "strangeness" is subjective and xenophobia is the fear of that which is strange, among other things, you could argue that gays aren't any more strange than clowns, spiders, ventriloquist dummies, etc. Regardless whether or not homophobia is a subgroup of xenophobia is asinine because that doesn't refute anything I said at first.
Just because we call anyone that hates gays a homophobe doesn't mean they suffer from homophobia, and as such isn't a mental disease in the way that we use the word. The original poster is simply referring to generic hate and not actual homophobia, and is simply not referring to an actual mental illness.

Yes, words alter in their meaning, but unless someone changed what the words "mental illness" means than it doesn't matter if people use homophobe to define those with an aversion to paddleboats and rainbows. I wouldn't say a phobia, a fear, is a mental disease, but with a way of thinking like that obviously means there's something wrong with that person.

Dear user,
all sorts of things, fears, beliefs, cults and what not, have extremists.
I dare to bet there are even a few gays (LGBT community, don't go crazy on me, I said a few, not all lol) around there that want to murder hetero people for not being gay, just like it's vice versa.
