Description
How, you ask? Well, ponder this.Say a person went around life with a severe hatred of the color orange. And not as in "oh this orange shirt does nothing for my complexion" hate, but hate as in a sincere belief that anything bearing this color is pure evil, sinful, and must be eradicated. The belief that orange is the cause for all that is wrong with the world. Even going so far as to brutally attacking/killing people for merely wearing the color orange.
You'd think that person was a prime candidate for the nuthouse, right?
Now go over that scenario again, but replace 'the color orange' with 'homosexuality'.
Yeah.

Not all of them are. Nice generalization though. It makes you about as bad as the ones you probably mean. Ever think that some homophobes were raised that way whether that's right or not? Also, mental disease =/= stupid. The OP implied that mental disease is a bad thing and means you're a bad person for having it. They had the gall to suggest that all homophobes and racists are not only evil but evil because they have mental problems and something of the like. They were being an ableist prick and a lot of uninformed people like you are clogging this place up...so no. We will not just end it on that. There is so much wrong here that needs to be corrected. This stamp was only made because this 27 year old took an obvious troll's bait and cried over it. This will end when either the OP learns something or runs away like a coward or when people just get bored. But considering all the bullshit that can be thrived upon here this will go on for a few days at least!

i never said it was a mental disease, did i? no, i didn't. maybe you shouldn't just assume everything. this just makes you seem like a homophobe. but hey, whatever, you believe what you want. i believe that they're idiots (not a mental disease, by the way) and you can believe that i'm an idiot. i'm cool with that. i'll respect your opinion, but i guess you won't respect mine.
but back to what you said, "this will go on for a few days at least", so do you want to argue about life? ..because i'm ready to call out a few breeders here.

It's not like I don't respect your opinion I am just throwing it out there why it's going to go on and on. The OP made an ignorant statement very deserving of the shitstorm they got.
Cheers to you too, broseph. Thank you for listening.

Could you tell me where in the DSM-IV-TR homophobia is classified as mental illness?
Can you also provide a source for me on why a mental illness alone is a reason a person should be locked up? Given I'm schizophrenic and have been forcibly committed in the past, you can understand why this is a matter of importance to me.
Oh, and lastly, could you please explain to me at which point in your life you forgot the meaning of the suffix "-phobia" ("an irrational fear", such as my "acrophobia" and "equinophobia") and confused it with the meaning of the word "bigotry"? An irrational fear of homosexuals is just as understandable as an irrational fear of heights or horses, it certainly doesn't mean a person is crazy. It's just something that needs to be worked around, mostly by the person with the fear, but preferably with assistance from those around them. Which suggesting they should be institutionalized against their will is not exactly "assisting".
When I was in the mental institution, one of the guys I spoke to most often was locked up because he took something like twenty times the recommended dosage of LSD, then proceeded to jump off of the roof of his house. Which wouldn't be a big deal, except this was the third time he'd done it. He also had started slashing up his wrist in the middle of a university lecture. Pulled out his pocket knife and just started hacking away.
I don't think "homophobia" is exactly on a level with that.

I do not appreciate you not agreeing homosexuality and hope you change your mind one day though I am glad you are at least self-aware about it rather than outwardly denying it like most would. I am also happy that you are not one of those people that takes their views so seriously that you would go after said group of people. The person who made the stamp seems to be one of those people not only is she attacking homophobes but she's attacking people with mental diseases as a whole.
It's even funnier because she's trying to come off on some moral high ground when not only did she imply having mental problems is bad but she implied not supporting homosexuality instantly makes you some sort of villain. Also, she's been on this website 9 years and she's 27.

I'm just glad you're not getting all bootybothered over my views. I do not appreciate having my opinions reviewed, it's rather condescending and disrespectful. Not butthurt, it's just rather rude. Lol those people are fun. I've seen way too much of that and it's sad that people take themselves so seriously sometimes. It's so narcissistic, it's disgusting.
Lol are you serious?! xD That's grand.

I am not saying you hate them and I never suggested I had to appreciate it. I just like throwing my two cents in whenever there's a place for it. Once again, I like how you're aware of how you feel but you are not being a cunt about it. I am not trying to review, I am just giving my opinion on your opinion. If I wanted to be condescending I would do it super blatantly and heavily because I'm a pretty blunt person. I am not really a negative person. The Tl;dr and honesty make it come off that way though so I can understand people seeing it that way. It helps when I add emotes but I was too lazy to use anything this time. I am sorry if it came off like a tone though. At least you're not offended. I like that much too. It's nice to see that in people whether or not I agree with them.
Those people. Just hilarious. They are so common yet they don't get old.

Ohhh ok, yeah that's understandable lol. Maybe it's just because I don't know you and I'm not used to how you talk or something. It's nice to find people like that, isn't it? I've met only a few people like that and it's nice to be able to talk about controversial topics and not get flamed for having an opinion lol. No, it's fine, just a simple misunderstanding. :3 Nah I wouldn't be offended over such a silly thing.
Oh my god I must look lol.

No, no. At first I thought the analogy was shit, then I extended it and realized it wasn't.
My point was that we're all perpetually ignorant, it's impossible to not be ignorant. Things that exist that we could know increase at a much faster rate than what we can learn, with every second we grow more ignorant, not less. So my point was going to be that it's silly to say that ignorance is a disease, because we'd all be sick with it then. Then I realized that, wait a second, that actually makes sense.

I think people use the word wrong.
Homophobia is a fear of homosexuality.
Most people who say "Oh, he's homophobic! That bastard" no, he doesn't fear gays, he just hates them for whatever reason.
It's hate not fear.
I mean come on people, there's people who are afraid that somewhere out there there's a duck watching you.
There's probably someone out there who is actually afraid of gay people.
My point is, stop using homophobia as a way of saying that a person hates homosexuality, it just makes you sound as stupid as they people who say "OMG that's so gay"

GatitaZ In reply to Overlord-Mercia [2012-09-30 14:00:14 +0000 UTC]
Most of the time, the base cause of hate is fear, and lack of understanding.
They hate homosexuals because they fear that the "gayness" will rub off on them, or because they fear gay dude will fall in love with them, or stalk and/rape them. Or because they're different, and anything that's different must be bad.
You'll come across this with all sorts of stuff. It's embedded in any sort of prejustice, even the little ones. For this reason I think "Homophobic" IS an appropriate term, if perhaps a little narrow.

Overlord-Mercia In reply to GatitaZ [2012-09-30 16:51:47 +0000 UTC]
I just think people use it too much, most of the time anyone who doesn't agree with homosexuality, whether it be religion, hatred towards them or actual fear/disgust is a homophobe. When in reality the first one it's just against there religion and we all know how people get sticky with there beliefs even if it doesn't make sense. And hatred is a bit more tricky, you can hate a group of people without being afraid that they're going to stalk/rape/whatever.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
GatitaZ In reply to Overlord-Mercia [2012-09-30 20:23:01 +0000 UTC]
Personally, I think all hate is based on fear, though that fear ca be hard to track down.
As for the religion, I, personally, don't have a problem with someone feeling homosexuality is against their religion, so long as they don't try to push it off on anyone else.
"Homophobia" may be overused, I don't know, I haven't noticed it being so myself. But I don't have anything to do with the Gay rights people who tend to get nasty.

That's silly. Sure, I hate horses because I've seen dogs that were kicked by them. Yeah, that's rooted in fear. I hate going up stairs because I pressed my face to the glass of the 103rd floor of the Sears Tower. Yeah, that's rooted in fear.
But say that I fucking hate Taylor Swift. Not just "oh, her music sucks". Say that I wanted to coat a room and myself in her entrails, leave her body completely unrecognizable. Where is the "fear" of Taylor Swift rooted?
