Description
Drawing this was fun, but also a bit sad as I couldn't keep it out of my mind that Mufasa never gets to see Adult Simba (unless you count the encounter in the clouds). But, anyway, this was still fun to draw regardless.I tried photographing this with my phone and then adding a background. Still playing around with how I want to represent my traditional artwork on here.

Thank you so much! I use prismacolor scholar colored pencils, I don't think they are quite as nice as actual prismacolor colored pencils, but they're a tad bit cheaper which is nice. This is also over a base of copic markers.

I like that you made the characters look like themselves, and that Simba and Mufasa look different from each other.
Seriously. I see pictures of 'Mufasa' looking too much like Simba all the time, and of the characters being completely off-model. Though, I think Mufasa's mane should look a bit bigger? Idk.
It's a pretty nice piece.

Thank you so much! Seriously, its a huge compliment to say that I got them close to being on model. Its a goal I have. Idk, I really like trying to draw characters as on-model as I can. I'm not an animator, but if animators can do it, why can't I?
I see what you're saying about Mufasa's mane, it was the first time I've tried to draw him seriously, and it probably should be a bit bigger, Mufasa was older than Simba is by the end of the movie, and his mane is definitely more fluffy.
Thanks again!

I feel the same way about drawing characters on-model, and it's really satisfying to get a difficult character (for me, that's Scar and Nuka) to look right. Like, it annoys me to no end when drawings of a character just doesn't look like them. Like you said, if the animators can do it, so can we--with a bit of practice and references of course. Though, the SP animators were a disappointment. They got no one right.
And you're welcome. By the way, I'm glad you reacted well to the comment on Mufasa's mane. Some people throw hissy fits; others just say "I didn't ask for a critique" and don't even consider it.

Haha seriously. I feel like some people shy away from drawing characters on model, but I believe its better to understand what they look like first, then stylize from there. I don't want to hide behind anything.
I need to rewatch SP again, its been ages since I've seen it. But from the screenshots I've seen recently I can tell that Simba looks VERY different, like not even the same character. Well, I guess thats what you get with a strait to video release (which I think SP was, I might be wrong though, lol).
And thanks for the critique! Everyones art is flawed (mine especially) and I feel like not admitting that improvement is possible prevents you from moving forward. Heck, I want to get better, and I want to know what to improve!

Some people just draw the same character over and over with different colours and hairstyles, lol. Both for their own characters, and for characters from films/TV/video games. It's kind of depressing and looks extremely limited. But I agree, it is best to understand what the character looks like first. You can't draw a character without knowing what they look like after, all.
I haven't seen either film in ages, unfortunately. Though, I do know what the characters look like, and SP Simba isn't even Simba. He's too dark and everything looks off. Of course, direct-to-video releases are often lower in quality and everything looks wonky. Especially the Disney ones. Awful.
And again, you're welcome. I fully agree with you on those last few sentences too (aside from your art being horribly flawed). That sort of attitude toward critique and improvement is what anyone who calls themselves an artist should have. Those who never accept critique don't tend to improve, and even a critical artist may not notice certain things that weren't done well/right that others are able to.

Wow, this is amazing I love how you gave both of them their unique character in their faces - I know that's damn difficult.
also great work with the pencils and I love the dark underground

Aw, thanks! Haha I need to get much better at adding backgrounds to my images. Because it was a photograph, and not a scan, the white had a weird gradient to it which I felt I needed to change. Glad you like it though
