Description
UPDATE, FEBRUARY 27, 2011Okay, out of all the people who have faved this stamp, I have had one person say how disrespectful it is to make fun of a disability.
FIRST OFF - It was never my attention to disrespect ANYONE with any disability when I made this stamp with a quote by SOMEONE ELSE!!! I just happen to know that MOST writers do end up becoming the characters they write, hence the schizophrenia part. (And yes, I've been there. I don't feel I need to explain my personal life with people if I don't feel you deserve it). If you don't like, complain the original person who helped me make this stamp....E.L. Doctorow, an author and writer himself.
For more of his trivial and disrespectful quotes, please visit [link]
One of my favorite quotes of all time made into a stamp.

Totally agree with this. (Hence my username) Actually writing has caused me to NOT stay up without sleep for 7 days. So sometimes I can't help but think that I have no idea what I'm saying. *twitches* Apparently I have insomnia so yeah and sometimes I do become what I write. Just ignore them internet trolls. Love the stamp btw totally sticking on my id.

I've actually thought this myself since supposedly hearing voices in your head is a symptom but people usually don't complain when writers say they hear their book characters and chock it up to creative whimsy. Another way to look at it is that OCs are a writer's imaginary friends. I'm glad someone made a stamp of this

I can't believe someone said something so stupid to you! >:U
It's an amazing stamp, and as a writer I agree completely.
Keep up the brilliant work!

You know something, I never really thought of writing that way before. And I found myself agreeing with the stamp ^^
A lot of our own characters have our traits, whether they're good or bad. And you know when you're feeling any particular emotion? Sometimes you think to yourself that maybe you can use that for one of your characters.

I think almost all of my characters have some of my trait in them, even the men.

Well, thank you. I've gotten so many positive and LOLs on this and then the few who've just turned this into something serious and not the funny thing it's supposed to be, have just made me start blocking and hiding their comments. And I hate to do that to people. I believe freedom of speech is important, but my God, lighten up. Especially if someone is schizo or even borderline schizo can laugh at it...

I've seen more insulting things on TV, that outright make fun of serious things (ex: peanut allergies, sometimes they do black comedy that shows that it is a serious thing, but a lot of the time I see stuff that isn't even trying to show that peanut allergies are a serious thing and that they can kill you) and expect people to laugh. (which I know has a bad effect on kids...trying to trick a kid with peanut allergies to eat peanut butter, etc.)
I think this is funny and kind of true.
I'd only ever get mad if something is really horrible, but internet fury wouldn't do anything anyway.

I suffer from schizophrenia, and I'm sick of the unrealistic way it's portrayed. I'm not angry, getting angry won't solve a thing, just tired of people's ignorance.

Schizophrenia is one of those things which is rare enough that most people aren't going to meet someone who has it, but interesting enough in what it is that everyone will hear about it. Things get garbled as it goes on, so eventually all people have is the stereotype.
The stamp itself isn't portraying Schizophrenia, but the artist comments do kind of show that they (sorry wyldflower ) don't really know what it actually does.
Still, it wasn't intended to harm anyone or spread ignorance, and unless it actually meant harm, then no problem.

Because most writers become their characters when they write.

But having several personalities/becoming someone else isn't schizophrenia :/
I'm still confused.

World-Hero21 In reply to SSjUmi [2011-04-21 02:41:25 +0000 UTC]
In a way, it kinda is.
Schizophrenia is having a split-personality. Since characters have very different personalities and one person created those characters, many writers do actually become those characters. I've heard from somewhere that the characters make the story. Well, they can make the story, but the one that writes it down is the author, right? So in order for the story to be made, the author becomes the characters in order to write the story.
That's why writers are often compared to having schizophrenia.
Sorry if I didn't make it any more clear. I'm not really sure why people compare writing to schizophrenia, but...it's a common saying.
And I can vouch that I've acted like some of my characters before. XD;

I was wondering, because schizophrenia actually has nothing to do with split personalities ^^'''
If it did, I would fully agree to your explaination. But it doesn't. Schizophrenia is hearing voices, being paranoid, lacking emotions, suffering from massive delusions and stuff like this :/
Having split personalities is called Dissociative Identity Disorder or Multiple Personality Disorder.

World-Hero21 In reply to SSjUmi [2011-04-21 03:07:47 +0000 UTC]
Well, I do hear my characters' voices in my head. No joke; my two main characters have turned into my muses/conscience, and their voices often jump into the topics that are in my head. But that's the only schizophrenic symptom I have.
π: 0 β©: 1
SSjUmi In reply to World-Hero21 [2011-04-21 04:10:37 +0000 UTC]
I guess, that's a good thing XD @ only symptom
I once wrote a story in which one of my characters developed schizophrenia - it was anything but nice and he kept it forever, even though thx to his med and treatment he could lead a nearly normal life in the end.
I guess that's one of the reasons I grew a bit (= overly) sensitive to the misconception of schizophrenia being related to split personalities ^^'
But thinking of it like this, ideas for stories and associations with fics I've read or wrote myself are literally haunting me every day, even when I don't want them to, making me almost paranoid, so I guess there really is some reason to associate schizophrenia with writing

Oh, or is it somehow related to split personalities (which is something entirely different, but often confused with schizophrenia)? o.o
