Description My first "tutorial" and about time, too. I'm interested in opinions on whether or not I should add some small description and or numbers.. I was just flat too lazy to add it att. XD

LOL I imagine that over 30 years of practice and 15 years of study and production is probably the main contributor.

I was wondering what kind of hair you use? ^^ I am looking into making some of my old gen3 ponies into customs and i can't seem to find the right sort of hair ^^

I use this site almost exclusively for all of my customs, www.dollyhair.com/mlpnylonhair…

Thanks! ^^ I'm also wondering about any tips on getting the hair out of the ponys head? XD I am stuck with the last bit of it and it seems to be melted in place ^^

wylf In reply to CorcraMoonRaes [2014-01-31 20:25:43 +0000 UTC]

It's the glue. It's awful stuff. XD Heat and elbow grease seem to be the most effective way to get it all out.
Β  I highly recommend the Custom board at the MLPArena.com forum for customizing info. There is TONS of good information on customizing.

I'm going to customise RD, but I can't seem to get the head off.
Plus all I have is Webkinz hair to reroot.

wylf In reply to FabulousMaggot [2012-10-10 19:14:43 +0000 UTC]

Try either soaking her in really, really hot water or use a hairdryer to soften the vinyl. Just be careful not to burn yourself! I have a pair of super thick gloves that I use whenever I am working with ponies on the boil.

Keep an eye out for wigs that are on clearance after Halloween. If you don't mind using a lower quality hair than say dollyhair nylon or saran you can often find some pretty cool colours after the holiday. I always grab at least half a dozen wigs every year just for doll wigs and rerooting. (It's also a great time to stock up on Faux Lashes! )

Gryphonia [2012-09-05 11:05:23 +0000 UTC]

Hi! I wanted to ask: what sort of paint do you use for the colours. I am thinking of making a custom pony myself, but have no idea which one to use. Are acrylycs good? Is there some sort of paint which once painted does NOT come off if pony gets in the water? Many thanks in advance.

Your work is truly gorgeous!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

wylf In reply to Gryphonia [2012-09-06 19:21:01 +0000 UTC]

Yup, I use acrylics almost exclusively on my MLP. I can't advise you on a waterproof paint. Once my customs are sealed they can withstand a little bit of water; ie, I can style the hair in wet ringlets and the curlers do not disturb the seal. But, I wouldn't recommend them getting "wet" at all.

Good luck with your first custom!! Just be warned: They can be addictive!! LOL

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gryphonia In reply to wylf [2012-09-07 16:30:14 +0000 UTC]

I see. What do you mean by 'sealed'?

I know: I want to do one already and I already planned the look in ma head XD: I just need the 'bait' I already considered the possibility of at least 2 more after them XDDDDDD! I haven't started yet, and already am addicted. X3 Maybe, even after the contest I am working on right now.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

wylf In reply to Gryphonia [2012-09-08 16:33:25 +0000 UTC]

"Sealed" as in coated in a layer (or two or three depending on what kind of look you're going for) of sealant such as "Modge Podge" which is what I usually use on ponies. You can find it at your local WalMart or most craft stores.

Good luck with your customs! I hope that you have fun and that this information has been helpful to you! ^.^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gryphonia In reply to wylf [2012-11-08 14:28:48 +0000 UTC]

I see. You wouldn't believe but I have never used one before...So, that's why I am asking. I haven't even seen one in stores here yet! So I ordered one! Do you use a Spray Modge Podge for ponies or something else?

Oooooh, you have no idea! I have already planned which ponies to custom! STill waiting for materials (sealant, hair and other stuff). Can't wait to start!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

wylf In reply to Gryphonia [2012-11-08 18:01:28 +0000 UTC]

I usually use Modge Podge in a jar and paint it on in even layers. I've only used a spray sealant to seal full-body repaints and I avoid FBRs as much as possible anymore. XD I hate sticky ponies, and you can never trust an FBR to remain nice and glossy in the humidity where I live. ick

Who do you order your apoxie from? I'm having trouble finding a store that has a *functional* website for ordering with Paypal.

Love the repose on the wings! Subtle, but so much more functional!

She is gorgeous!!! And I would love a bit of a step by step description on the progress and what's actually going on in some of the images. I'm not brave enough to try my hand at customizing just yet... but I'm slowly inching my way closer to that point. LOL

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

wylf In reply to td365 [2012-08-31 19:27:58 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking of just adding numbers to the photos and adding a bit of descriptive text into the deviant description itself. I still may do that. Thanks for the input, Doll!

You should totally take the leap and start customizing; it's a blast!!! But, beware!! It's very addictive, too!! LOL

'Cause that's what I need... ANOTHER MLP hobby.

LMAO Oh, I'm sure I'll make the leap at some point. But so far every junky pony I've purchased has actually cleaned up pretty well. I picked up a filthy Heart Throb that I was sure would be custom bait... aside from a tiny bit of marker on her non-display side that I haven't been able to scrub off, she's lovely now that she's clean. LOL

Oh, my. That's how I started my collection was buying TLC ponies and keeping the ones that I couldn't bring myself to use as bait. hee hee I have a video of a 360 degree shot of my pony room that I really need to upload to youtube, but it's just flat ridiculous and I haven't been able to make myself do it, yet. LOL
