Dark clouds collected in the distance, and the air felt heavy with the promise of rain. Well down into the valley now, Lutah was beginning to feel a sharp pain in his ankle, growing more insistent the longer they walked.
"Are you feeling alright, dearie?" Sorrel asked, ever the keen eye.
"Just a bit sore. Nothing's wrong." He replied shortly.
"That leg looks a mite tender."
The pale mare moved to support him with a worried whisper of an inhale, but he shrugged her off. She shied away with flattened ears.
Lutah grimaced, "I don't need any help. Thanks, though." He didn't sound particularly grateful.
She left him alone, but he could feel her dark eyes boring into him. It made his spine tingle.
"We ought to find cover before the storm hits." Sorrel bounced over to Lutah, looking around them intently and sniffing the air. "Go ask that crow over there by >

Lutah opted to lead them down towards lower ground, where the snow had receded and forage would be easier to find. Or rather, Sorrel had suggested they do that when Lutah’s blank stare became uncomfortably long, and the young stallion had agreed it sounded like a good idea.

Sorrel also thought they would find the herbs she needed to treat the pale mare’s illness further down the valley, to which the mare had perked up with obvious assent. He hoped Sorrel was right, it would be nice to have a name to call her instead of just "Miss."

So the small herd was off. Lutah set the pace, walking more gingerly as his adrenaline faded and the soreness began kicking in. The mare on the other hoof seemed enlivened by the ordeal. She grew more spirited the further they descended into the valley, a great smile plastered over her face.

Herd life, Lutah quickly discovered, was noisy. And vaguely irritating. The mare might not be able to speak, but she could make affirming wheezes and huffs. She pranced around like a spring filly, bucking and skipping in circles around Lutah until he felt dizzy on her behalf. And Sorrel was clearly thrilled to have a new pair of ears to listen to all her stories. The first few hours of their journey, the sow managed to relate almost every embarrassing memory of Lutah’s youth to their new companion.

Scratch "vaguely." Very irritating.

Honestly. Helping this pretty girl? Inviting her to tag along? What had he been thinking?
