The old semi-out-of-date quadruped reference picture can be found here: fav.me/d7eshlt
These sketches are here temporarily while I work on a fuller reference and are just cutouts of all these conceptual drawings found here: sta.sh/214eugwc7cyx?edit=1
Theria Morgenstern is a character I made for a Mutants and Masterminds tabletop RPG, a setting very much like a homebrew DC or Marvel world. (In fact the current DC Adventures RP system is exactly M&M, just with DC characters instead of the more off-brand homebrew characters. XD) When I chose her name I had no clue it meant. I was just like "Doo, doo-doo, oh, this name looks pretty, I'mma use this one! " and when I looked it up later and it meant 'wild beast' I was like "Well then. That name fits almost too perfectly..." and then there were the therianthropes and I was waaaaaaaaaay deeper into the furry community than I had intended to go. XD Enough of that. Onto the character.
She was once an ordinary girl who did well in her studies, but her life got a whole lot more exciting and complicated when she volunteered for a seemingly harmless experiment that had much more extreme results than expected and left her with a very not human form.
Despite her new bestial form being 'furred' (actually feathered) and naturally quadrupedal she still wears clothing (highly stylized, flowing and/or loose to fit her anatomy and general minimalistic to reduce weight and drag in flight) and has trained herself to walk upright, placing her thin frame at aprx. 6'5" on her hind legs. (Previously 7'6", I scaled her down a little for now as her new body is still in an adolescent phase, but she will grow to reach aprx. 8'0")
She's generally an easy-going person who makes friends quickly and is highly motivated and goal-oriented, these traits combined with her desire to help people and do good make superheroing a natural pursuit for her. She took on the moniker Quetzal as her superhero name, representing freedom and light, and while in action wears some variation of high tech armor (now pictured!), her oldest suit being something like stylized SWAT gear and her newest resembling a simple 'bikini'-style harness set leaving her appearing mostly bare while projecting a near-invisible force field around her and housing it's power source in a (relatively) discrete 'hump' on her back between her wings. (Not anymore!)
As a beast she has enhanced senses and lightning fast reflexes. She can fly unusually fast for an Earth-creature (top speed 250mph level flight) and has the ability to manipulate light; including the ability to gain sustenance from the sun, project illusions, turn invisible, regenerate wounds quickly, and (one of her personal favorites) shoot LAZERZ from her FACE.
She has no fur only feathers (but most of her body feathers look exactly like fur until you get reeeeeeal close, like an inch away close), her feathers are white while her skin is black. Her irises are blue with a golden limbus and her pupils are vertically ovid/slit. She has two ears that are double tipped.
Her clawed wings are primarily based off of those of puffins, gannets, and murres; having a highly alterable flight surface to allow for flight in the air and underwater. When posing for pictures Theria usually holds her feathers in the more dynamic-looking shape that is used for underwater flight.

-Flying murre reference: sdakotabirds.com/species_photo…
(Note the extreme way the birds can alter the shape of their wings to suit boht arial and aquatic locomotion)
Her arms are mostly human but her shoulders are bestial as her arms lack a clavicle. Her hands are clawed, and like a tiger the outer digits come in contact with the ground first while ambulating in a quadruped style. Her feet are fully prehensile complete with four finger-like toes and a thumb; something like a baboon foot hybridized with a cat or dog paw.
P.S. If you're here at this reference to draw Theria don't worry about drawing her clothed or about getting her anatomy PERFECT. (Especially not her hands and feet, I know those are especially hard for most people on any kind of creature. Take it easy. ) As long as all the basic features are there I'll be happy.
(And don't draw her with four ears if you can help it. Two ears, four points, yes. Any style you feel like, as long as they're pointed. Have fun.) Go crazy with the fluff. She is quite fluffy.

I love how her body is shaped, and everything is in flow!
o_O But isn't she very thin? (not that I mind!)
Theria looks like she could actually fly, with her wings It's a thing I really like!

Thanks!
And she is very thin! I did that on purpose. I figured as she gains a good portion of her sustenance from the sun (yummy multispectrum light!) she doesn't have much use for a huge length of pesky intestines in flight like people and other animals have got. As I research the placement of the internal organs of creatures like birds and cats I may change how thin she is.

That's for sure! I want to add markings to Theria here but there's just so many to choose from! I know I like the color of the marble berry... Have you seen pictures of a marble berry? They're gorgeous!

I think the rainbow iridescent specks would be great for plumage.

Ah ha!
It must be important.
The color blue is recognized by the human eye very quickly.

It's a nice color. I think I'm going to drop it's intensity down a bit to a navy blue if I use it. The rainbow sparkles will stand out better that way! Also navy blue/dark indigo is possibly my favorite color.

Awww yisss! I'm considering changing her pupils from the slit/ovoid shape to a standard round pupil that's found in birds... Weighing the theoretical advantages of the slit/ovoid pupil vs the round pupil, the round pupil generally wins for a flying predator. The shape allows the creature to maintain an adequately wide field of vision to take in information about terrain and flight obstacles while allowing a focal point for targeting prey. A slit pupil allows for greater motion sensitivity and greater focus on a single target, which is generally superior when hunting, but looses the breadth a flying creature requires.
BUT, with this particular character's setup her extra set of eyes could in theory offset the cut field of vision that results from a narrower pupil, leaving the choice up to a personal style choice once again...
I like the ferocity and feral look a slit pupil gives. I think I just convinced myself to stick with a slit shape.
What do yoouuuuu think?

Hmm......personally I like the slit look but I tend to keep the open round pupil for a lot of my characters. XD Its easier to light and shade a round eye in my opinion...

WyrmsRoost In reply to Zarienai [2013-10-28 01:28:30 +0000 UTC]
That is entirely true, and round eyes are best for portraying innocence, making a character less menacing. I'll debate with myself about it for a bit longer, but I'll probably end up with slit pupils still. XD

lol thats fine. XD HEY maybe you can help me though. o3o i'm having issues with one of my original species. XD They had an odd head shape.....looks nice...but I'm having issues transferring point of view with it. -_- XD Note me about it? So I'm not spamming your art with random comments?

Tee hee, This is pretty much my second photoshop painting ever. I just kinda scribbled and it seemed to come out alright. The trick I've found is painting every body part on separate layers to make corrections easier, and layer those shadows/highlights. And something to do with masks too. I drew a rough, loose sketch and just painted everything on top of that. A hard brush helps too.
Looking at this again I need to go back and fix her face, the proportions are off... and the feet are still bad... I got lazy. XD

Really? XD Wow. I always feel the need to pt everything on one layer. I'll try your technique and see what happens.
I love the feet. I find doing them the hardest part when painting like this.

I scribbled out those feet so quick... Doing them on a separate feet layer really helps me relax about getting them looking right, though.
The head, neck, torso, waist, tail, and each arm, leg, and wing has their own layer. It really helps me to relax about anatomy and emphasize depth.

This update is alot.... Hope you don't have a horribly crippled twin some where. Quetzalcouatl was twin to Xolotl, god of fire, lighting, death, and disease whom manifest as a skeloton, dogheaded man and... some other abomination. I came across this bit of information while looking for a mythological connection to the axolotl. Some crazy stufff, those Aztecs.

Nooope. I did draw her with more bulk when I was trying to give her a more humanoid frame, but I threw the more humanoid concept to the wind. She is unusually light weight for her size. Also her waist looks exceptionally thin because I always draw things that way. XD I usually have to bulk things out because people say they look too thin, but since she's my supernatural light monster I can do whatever I want.
But I can bullshit that it's because her bulked-out ribcage with it's keeled sternum and exaggerated spinous processes for her flight muscles, coupled with her short carnivorous intestines AND all her fluff that make her waist seem so extremely thin. Oh, AND her pelvis is now a quadruped's rather than a humanoid's, that narrows it up a bit too.
Weeeeeeeeeeeeee~
